Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John is working his way towards becoming an Eagle Scout and has one required Merit Badge left. Which of the following is a Merit Badge required for Eagle?

Answer: Family Life

Family Life was added as a required Eagle Merit Badge in 1978. Cooking was a required Merit Badge from 1914 to 1972, and was later reinstated. Pioneering has never been a required Merit Badge. Sewing and Crocheting have never been Merit Badges.
2. John has earned Emergency Preparedness, Lifesaving, Swimming, Hiking, and Cycling Merit Badges. How many of these Merit Badges can he use for Eagle?

Answer: 5

All of these Merit Badges can be used for the total of 21 Merit Badges for Eagle, but only two can be considered as Eagle required Merit Badges. For example a Scout could earn Emergency Preparedness or Lifesaving for one of the required Merit Badges. Swimming, Hiking, or Cycling can be used as the second required Merit Badge.
3. John has one last step before he earns his Eagle badge and must face the Board of Review. The Board of Review might include anyone except who?

Answer: The mayor (John's uncle)

A relative of the Scout cannot sit on an Eagle Board of review.
4. John earned his Eagle badge. John's dad was also an Eagle Scout in 1972 but his Eagle Badge looks different. What is not on his dad's Eagle badge?

Answer: The words "Eagle Scout" and "Boy Scouts of America"

From 1972 to 1974 the words Eagle Scout and Boy Scouts of America were removed from the Eagle Badge in an attempt to make the badge more modern looking. It was widely unpopular and many Scouts sought older versions of the Eagle Badge or had their own made to look like the 1971 version.
5. John is proud of being an Eagle Scout and displays it proudly on his uniform. As a Boy Scout he can wear all the following except which?

Answer: The Eagle Square knot

The Eagle badge and Medal can be worn by a boy. If an adult earned Eagle, as a boy, he can only wear the Square knot.
6. What words appear on John's Eagle medal?

Answer: Be Prepared

While Eagle Scout, Boy Scouts of America, and Be Prepared appear on the Badge, only Be Prepared appears on the medal.
7. John earned 5 more merit badges for a total of 15 beyond his Eagle. Assuming he has already earned two palms, which palm will he be awarded at the next court of honor?

Answer: Silver

It is a popular misnomer that the order of Eagle Palms is like Olympic medals Bronze, Silver, Gold. While the Bronze palm represents 5 Merit Badges over Eagle and the Gold represents 10 Merit Badges over Eagle, the Silver palm represents a total of 15 Merit Badges beyond the Merit Badges earned for Eagle Scout. There is no Platinum Palm.
8. John earned 20 palms during his time as a Boy Scout. How old was he when he earned Eagle Scout?

Answer: 13

In order for John to have completed 20 palms he would have had to have earned his Eagle Scout at the age of 13. This is because a Scout would have to be an active Scout for 3 months between each palm.
9. John has spent many years in the Boy Scouts and is an Eagle Scout and has many palms. What is the highest rank he has earned?

Answer: Eagle

The highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America is Eagle. Eagle palms are considered awards.
10. In 2006, John entered the military. Can he wear an Eagle insignia on his military dress uniform?

Answer: No-in no circumstance

In 2006, the National Eagle Scout Association began issuing replica Eagle Scout medals suitable for wearing on a military dress uniform, however, there is NO military regulation allowing a soldier to wear it on any military uniform.
