Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bullet proof vests (or bullet resistant vests) will stop all bullets.

Answer: False

Bullet proof, or more accurately, bullet resistant vests will stop most hand gun ammunition. However, rifle rounds will penetrate concealable body armor.
2. The U.S. Constitution specifically mandates that a police officer read a suspect the Miranda Warning following an arrest.

Answer: False

The U.S. Constitution does not require the reading of the Miranda Advisory by a police officer. The advisory is the result of a 1966 court case (Miranda v. Arizona) that has changed the practice of police ever since.
3. Which Constitutional Amendment guarantees the right of the people to be protected from "unreasonable searches and seizures" by the government?

Answer: The Fourth Amendment

The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution, adopted in 1791, guarantees the right of US citizens to be protected from "unreasonable searches and seizures". The government, as a rule, must obtain a search warrant prior to searching persons or property. There are, however, a few legal exceptions to this rule. See Question #5.
4. What does the acronym S.W.A.T. stand for?

Answer: Special Weapons And Tactics

The S.W.A.T. concept was initially developed in the late 1960's by then Los Angeles Police Inspector Darryl F. Gates as a result of violent encounters and sniping incidents following the Watts riots. Special Weapons And Tactics Teams have become used more and more by police agencies across the nation to perform a variety of functions requiring specially trained tactical officers using specialized weaponry.
5. In the U.S., a police officer cannot, under any circumstances, enter a person's home without a search warrant.

Answer: False

As a general rule, the police can only enter a person's home with a warrant, UNLESS the following circumstances exist: the person gives consent for the officer to enter; the officer is responding to a medical emergency and must force entry; the officer is in hot pursuit; or other exigent circumstances exist, such as an obvious assault is occuring inside the home and entry is necessary to preserve life.
