Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. She was born Martha Custis in 1731 and was the first of our First Ladies. Martha married her husband in 1759 and they were together until his death in 1799. What was the name of her husband and the first president of the United States?

Answer: George Washington

George and Martha married in 1759. While they didn't have any children together, George adopted Martha's two children from her previous marriage as his own. Martha died in 1802 and was interred next to her husband at the family home at Mount Vernon.
2. Our next First Lady is probably best known for her gallant rescue of Gilbert Stuart's painting of George Washington when the White House was being burnt by the British during the War of 1812. She was raised a Quaker and married her future President in 1794. Which First Lady was this?

Answer: Dolley Madison

When Dolley and James Madison married in 1794, Dolley was forced to leave the Quakers since James was not a member of that religion. The couple remained married until James' death in 1836. Dolley died in 1849 and was eventually buried next to her husband at the Madison family cemetery on the property of their Montpelier estate in Virginia.
3. John Tyler's reign as president was not that memorable except for his annexation of Texas. However, he had the most children of any president. His first wife, Letitia, bore him eight children before she died of a stroke in 1842, while he was president. He remarried in 1844 to another woman who would give him seven more children. Do you remember what her name was?

Answer: Julia Tyler

Julia and John Tyler's marriage was the first for a still serving president. John was 30 years older than Julia. Julia was also younger than his daughter from the previous marriage. The couple remained married until his death in 1862. Julia died in 1889 and was buried next to her husband in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.

The three incorrect answers are names of Tyler's children.
4. Abraham and Mary Lincoln had been married in 1842 and by time he became president in 1861, they had four children. Two had already died by the time Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. Due to all these tragedies, Mary suffered from extreme migraines and depression for the remainder of her life. She came from a very prominent banking family in Lexington, Kentucky. Hmmmm, trying to remember what that last name was. Can you help me?

Answer: Todd

Before marrying Abraham, Mary had been involved with Stephen Douglas, Lincoln's primary political opponent. Mary outlived Abraham by seventeen years, dying in 1882. Another one of her sons died young in 1871 and only added to her burden. Over the passing years, she had to spend time in a sanitarium, attempted suicide, and continued to suffer from medical problems. Mary was buried next to her husband at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
5. The 19th President of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes, met the love of his life in 1847. Lucy Webb and Rutherford were married in 1852 and he was subsequently elected president in 1877. The First Couple did not allow alcoholic beverages to be served at the White House. Lucy served other refreshments to guest and acquired a nickname that was what?

Answer: Lemonade

"Lemonade" Lucy not only supported temperance, but also started the annual Easter egg roll at the White House. After Rutherford's term ended in 1881, the couple retired to the family estate Spiegel Grove, in Ohio. Lucy died suddenly of a stroke in 1889 at the age of 57. Rutherford died in 1893. Both were buried together at the Oakwood Cemetery in Fremont but were re-interred on the grounds of Spiegel Grove in 1915.
6. Grover Cleveland is well known as the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms. He is also recognized for being the first president to get married in the White House. During his first term, he met the young daughter of a close friend. She was attending Wells College and in 1886, they were married in the Blue Room. She was 21 and he was 49. 7. Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Eleanor married in 1905. She was actually a fifth cousin of her husband and shared a family relationship with a previous president, Theodore Roosevelt. What was that connection?

Answer: Niece

Teddy Roosevelt was Eleanor's uncle. FDR and Eleanor's relationship was rocky at best due to his numerous infidelities starting as early as 1915. By the late 1930s, it wasn't so much a marriage but rather a partnership of convenience. Franklin died in 1945 while Eleanor passed in 1962.

Despite all the problems during their years together, both are buried next to each other in the Hyde Park cemetery in New York.
