Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the original occasion on which Ronald Reagan used the phrase "There you go again"?

Answer: a quick reply to President Carter in a presidential debate

This was perhaps the turning point of the 1980 election season as Reagan responded to one of Carter's representations of Reagan's record.
2. "The economic ills we suffer have come upon us over several decades. They will not go away in days, weeks, or months. But they will go away."

Answer: Reagan's first inaugural address

A well spoken statement of hope that was central to Reagan's early economic plans. On Reagan's watch, double-digit inflation was more than cut in half, the median family income increased over 12 percent, and the prime interest rate fell dramatically from 21.5 percent. In October, 1982 an economic expansion began that continued into the last year of George H.W. Bush's presidency.
3. "I'm resetting my watch. It's six o' clock."

Answer: What Reagan frequently said to Tip O' Neill

Tip O' Neill responded to Reagan's attempts at friendship by saying the two of them could be friends in the evening but would always be enemies during working hours. In an attempt at disarming the Democratic speaker of the house, Reagan would give the above quote.
4. "I forgot to duck."

Answer: Said to Nancy Reagan after the assassination attempt in 1981

Reagan was quoting the words made famous by Jack Dempsey when he lost his boxing crown to Gene Tunney.
5. "I hope you're a Republican."

Answer: Reagan's words to a doctor about to remove a bullet from his chest

This is the other famous Reagan quip from the assassination saga of March, 1981. The doctor replied, "Today, Mr. President, we're all Republicans."
6. "Leave her alone, or I'll shoot you between the shoulders."

Answer: Reagan said this to stop a mugger from attacking a woman

Reagan rescued Melba King from a would be mugger in this incident that took place in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1933. Reagan was aiming an empty .45 at the mugger, who fled in fear.
7. "It's more than I thought we could get."

Answer: Reagan's comments following the 1981 tax cut

This was Reagan's entry in his diary following the tax cut deal that passed through Congress. Democrats actually insisted on some items that Reagan hadn't asked for, thus the above quote.
8. "I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience."

Answer: from a Reagan-Mondale presidential debate

This off-the-cuff zinger from Reagan may have sealed the 1984 election for him. He felt like he had lost the first debate, and came in to this second debate in Kansas City much more fresh and relaxed.
9. "Never again."

Answer: words from a Reagan speech at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp

Reagan was at the concentration camp on May 5, 1985, the same day he visited the Bitburg cemetery where Nazis were buried.
10. Who gave the following quote TO Reagan? "Mr. President, the world is quiet today." It was the last communication he received as president.

Answer: Colin Powell

It was the morning of January 19,1989, and Colin Powell was national security advisor.
