Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Calvin Coolidge was born in which year?

Answer: 1872

He was born in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. Other distinguished people born that year include one of my favorite authors, Zane Grey, baseball player Wee Willie Keeler, and the influential judge, Learned Hand.
2. What was Calvin Coolidge's father named?

Answer: John

John was also Calvin Coolidge's actual first name, although he used his middle name in his political career. His father, John Coolidge, purportedly had native American lineage. He also was a politician, serving as both a Vermont state representative and senator.
3. To what political party did Coolidge belong?

Answer: Republican

Coolidge was a Republican. Charles Dawes was his VP from 1925-1929. Dawes was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925.
4. In what year was Coolidge elected governor of Massachusetts?

Answer: 1918

His first elected office was city council in Northampton, Ma. Other offices he held were Mass. state senator, Mass. Lieutenant Governor, and V.P. of the United States under Harding.
5. In what year did Coolidge assume the presidency of the U.S. upon the death of Warren Harding?

Answer: 1923

Harding died in San Francisco. Coolidge's father was justice of the peace of Plymouth Notch, so he administered the oath of office. A second oath was administered later in Washington (to cover the state/federal question.)
6. Which man did Coolidge appoint to the Supreme Court?

Answer: Harlan Stone

Stone was later made Chief Justice by Roosevelt in 1941. Prior to his sitting on the Supreme Court, he was Dean of Law at Columbia.
7. What was Calvin Coolidge's best-known nickname?

Answer: Silent Cal

A well-known story recounts how a woman at a dinner party once bet someone that she could make Coolidge speak more than three words that night. His response was apparently "you lose." I am not sure if this is fact or legend, but it does make a good story.
8. What scandal plagued the previous administration (under President Harding)?

Answer: Teapot Dome

Coolidge fired Harding's attorney general Harry Daugherty over his handling of the scandal. Albert Fall, Harding's Secretary of the Interior, was convicted of accepting a $100,000 bribe for bypassing the bidding process for oil extraction.
9. Coolidge believed in the economic theory of "laissez faire". What does that mean?

Answer: Leave alone

One of my favorite quotes of Coolidge's is "the chief business of the American people is business." He believed in minimal government interference, which is broadly what is meant by "laissez faire".
10. in what year did Calvin Coolidge die?

Answer: 1933

He died of heart failure two months before Franklin D Roosevelt's inauguration in March 1933. He was only 60 years old.
