Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which president, who lowered both taxes and government spending, said this about a president who lowered taxes but raised spending? "He was one of the few political leaders I have ever met whose public speeches revealed more than his private conversations."

Answer: Gerald Ford about Ronald Reagan

Reagan easily won re-election; ironically Ford did not.
2. Who claimed, "When the president does it, that means it is not illegal." ?

Answer: Richard Nixon

Nixon's vice president, Spiro Agnew, lambasted "ultra-liberals" for "a pusillanimous pussyfooting on the critical issue of law and order." Of course, he later resigned after being fined for income tax evasion.
3. Which president said in a Playboy Magazine interview, "I have looked on a lot of women with lust."

Answer: Jimmy Carter

He went on to say, "I've committed adultery in my heart many times. God knows I will do this and forgives me."
4. Name the person who spoke and the circumstances in which the following was said: "If the bloodbath must come, then let's get on with it!"

Answer: Ronald Reagan as governor of California speaking about dealing with student protests

Only one student was killed on or near UC campuses during the tumultuous days of student protests in the 1960's and early 1970's. A moderate student was attempting to convince a crowd to disperse in Isla Vista, a student community near UC Santa Barbara. The student was shot and killed as the result of an "accidental discharge" from a national guardsman's rifle.
5. Name the person who spoke and the circumstances in which he said, "When people kill us, they should be killed in greater numbers."

Answer: Bill Clinton speaking about the war in Somalia.

George Stephanopoulos included this in his book, "All Too Human". Clinton was said to be ordering the bombing of civilian targets in Somalia. This is a gentler part of a longer, harsher quote.
6. Who said, "I watch a lot of baseball on the radio."?

Answer: Gerald Ford

Gerald Ford provided very effective comic relief for a president who had never been in show business.
7. Who observed, "Voters quickly forget what a man says."?

Answer: Richard Nixon

That's why it's better to have things on tape!
8. Who cautioned, "We can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans..."?

Answer: Bill Clinton

This was quoted in USA Today on March 11, 1993, but as was pointed out above, voters have short memories. It was, however, Abraham Lincoln who suspended the right of Habeas Corpus in 1861.
9. Who reassured timber company executives, "If you've seen one tree, you've seen them all"?

Answer: Ronald Reagan

Jack Warner indicated that the entertainment industry had to take its share of the responsibility for electing Ronald Reagan governor of California. "It's our fault. We should have given him better parts", he said.
10. While on the campaign trail who orated, "The last time I checked, the Constitution said, 'of the people, by the people and for the people.' That's what the Declaration of Independence says."?

Answer: Bill Clinton

It makes me wonder how Dan Quayle could get into such difficulty over adding "e" to potato. "Of the people, by the people, and for the people was, of course, in Lincoln's Gettysburg address.
