The Senate race in 1996 was extremely close in the runoff with Landrieu winning just over 5,000 votes. There were allegations that Landrieu and the Democratic Party of New Orleans had bused illegal voters to cast votes, or multiple votes, for Landrieu. However, an investigation showed potential witness tampering on the Republican side and witnesses were telling different and wildly outrageous stories and Landrieu was declared the winner.

In 2014, Landrieu faced new allegations that she did live in Louisiana because she owns a home in Washington D.C. Landrieu stated that she does own a home in D.C. but also one in Louisiana where her parents live and she is registered to vote at that address. Also in 2014, it came to light that Landrieu may have broken federal law when she charged taxpayers for flights she made as part of her reelection campaign. Landrieu's team did a self-investigation and determined that the air charter company had accidentally charged her flights to her office and not to her campaign. She agreed to reimburse the taxpayers.

Landrieu never faced allegations about stealing Hurricane Katrina relief money and was seen as a champion in securing the money for her state.
