Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First off, a maths question. What is pedwar + tri - chwech?

Answer: un

4 + 3 - 6.
The numbers from 1-10 are un, dae, tri, pedwar, pump, chwech, saith, wyth, naw, deg.
2. Which of these letters is NOT in the Welsh alphabet?

Answer: k

The Welsh alphabet consists of 28 letters, 8 of which are digraphs. A digraph is two letters combined to produce a sound that is not the same as the two individual sounds. The alphabet is; a b c ch d dd e f ff g ng h i l ll m n o p ph r rh s t th u w y.
3. In Welsh, you greet people differently depending on what time of the day it is. What does "noswaith dda" mean?

Answer: Good evening

"Bore da" is good morning, "nos da" is good night, and "prynhawn da" is good afternoon. Good afternoon can also be said as "p'nawn da".
4. It is polite to thank somebody after they do something for you. Which of these would you say to somebody to thank them?

Answer: Diolch yn fawr

"Os gwelych yn dda" means please, "wn i ddim" means I don't know, and "swyddfa'r heddlu" is a police station. You might get some strange looks if you thanked somebody with "police station".
5. Which of these would you be most likely to hear in the month "rhagfyr"?

Answer: Nadolig Llawen

"Rhagfyr" is December, and "Nadolig Llawen" is Merry Christmas. "Pasg Hapus" is Happy Easter, "Pen Blwydd Hapus" is Happy Birthday, and "Blwyddyn Newydd Dda" is Happy New Year.
6. Lloyd is a relatively common Welsh boy's name. From which colour does this name come?

Answer: Grey

The Welsh word for grey is "llwyd", so it is easy to see how you get Lloyd from that. "Glas" is blue, "gwyrdd" is green, and "melyn" is yellow.
7. Allergies are not an uncommon thing. How would I inform somebody of my allergy to penicilin?

Answer: Rwy'n alergedd i benisilin

You could also say this as "Mae 'da fi alergedd i benisilin". "Benisilin" and "penicilin' are obviously very similar across both languages.
8. While you are exploring the country, you decide to take some photos. Which of these should you remove before attempting to photograph your surroundings?

Answer: gorchudd lens

This is, of course, the lens cover. "Trybedd" is a tripod, "caead" is the shutter, and "bylb fflach" is the flash bulb.
9. Beth ydy "Rwy'n barod i roi'r ffidil yn y tô" yn Saesneg?

Answer: I'm ready to put the fiddle in the roof

This was a bit harder, as it was entirely in Welsh. The question translated is "What is 'Rwy'n barod i roi'r ffidil yn y tô' in English?"
"Rwy'n barod i roi'r ffidil yn y tô" is a Welsh idiom, which translated means "I'm ready to put the fiddle in the roof", which basically means "I'm ready to give up".
10. Which of these answers fits the question "Faint o'r gloch yw hi?"?

Answer: Mae'n hanner awr wedi deg

The question was "What time is it?"
The correct answer was "It is half past ten".
"Hoffwn i wneud galwad wrthdal" is "I would like to make a reverse charged call"; "Mae'r llinell yn brysur" is "The line is engaged"; and "Dyma fy mhasport" is "Here is my passport".
