Zoos, Real and Unreal Trivia Quiz

You may think this quiz is going to be animal-centric, but not all zoos are the same. This quiz looks at ten places that are allegedly zoos (and some are!) from around the world. Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Found in Balboa Park, what U.S. zoo is considered one of the largest in the world and is home to the Skyfari lift?

Answer: San Diego Zoo

Opening in 1916, the San Diego Zoo has since become one of the premier zoos in the world, consistently receiving honours from the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (AAZPA) for its work with endangered species; it's one of the few zoos in the world to successfully mate panda bears, koalas, and Galápagos tortoises in North America.

Its large habitats were some of the earliest in the continent designed to reflect original habitats of its various animals. The Skyfari lift, built in 1969, ascends along a lift cable over a large stretch of the park, allowing visitors to look down on the enclosures.
2. The Iron Zoo of Coalinga, California is home to which of these, painted to look like animals?

Answer: Oil derricks

Found in the San Andreas Fault, Coalinga found a lot of early success as an oil town and coal mining location in the nineteenth century, but as oil dried up, the derricks dotting the landscape became less and less vital to the local economy. Before they stopped moving, many of them were painted to look like animals (think giraffe spots and zebra stripes) so visitors could see the iron animals moving their heads up and down on the horizon. Coalinga is a short drive southwest of Fresno, California.
3. Which of these zoos, found in Southeast Asia, has been known to have the world's largest orangutan colony in its habitats?

Answer: Singapore Zoo

Also known as the Mandai Zoo, the Singapore Zoo is part of a complex in the northern forests of Singapore on the Upper Seletar Reservoir. Aside from orangutans, the zoo is also home to more than a dozen other primates endemic to the region. Singapore Zoo also shares the region with the Jurong Bird Park and the River and Night Safaris, the latter of which opened in 1994 as the world's first nocturnal zoo. Combined, the sites in this complex take in upwards of three million visitors per year.
4. Bill Swets, creator of the Swetsville Zoo, does not feature live animals on his property.

Answer: True

The Swetsville Zoo is a bit out-of-the-way in Fort Collins, Colorado and it wouldn't be on a list of typical zoos because it's more of a sculpture park, home to the artistic creations of property owner Bill Swets, who started making statues from old metal parts and concrete in the 1980s. Eventually, he amassed a collection of public art north of Boulder on the edge of the Cache la Poudre River, the menagerie of which includes a giant spider made from a Buick.
5. Pt. G.B. Pant Zoo in Naintal, India is known for which of these characteristics?

Answer: It's found at a high altitude

The Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo can be visited if you ascend two kilometers above sea level into the Indian Himalayas, and while many animals wouldn't feel at home in the high altitude, it is home to many local creatures (including tigers, bears, wolves, and birds).

The zoo is built into the hills in Naintal. Interestingly, the nearby Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling is found at a slightly higher altitude, and that one is the highest in the world. It's known for its red pandas.
6. Duisburg, Germany is home to Zoo Zajac, which is less of a zoo and more of which of these?

Answer: A pet store

Zoo Zajac, which opened in the mid-1970s, actually built itself up to be the world's largest pet store, taking in hundreds of thousands of animals and earning itself a Guinness World Record for its vast animal storage space. In addition to accepting tours of the facilities, much like a guided tour of a zoo, visitors can also purchase the animals inside ranging from domestic fare like cats, dogs, and fish, to more exotic fauna like rare fish, birds, and armadillos (amongst others).
7. The Tisch Family Zoological Gardens were, at one point, the most popular tourist destination in what nation?

Answer: Israel

More popularly known as the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo, this Israeli zoo is one of the leading zoos in the Middle East due to its conservation efforts in working with endangered species and preserving species mentioned in the Bible that no longer reside in the wild in Israel. Found to the southwest of the Old City, known for being a site of pilgrimage for many religious denominations, the zoo was visited by more people in some years than some of the holy sites found throughout Jerusalem.
8. La Montagne des Singes in France is home to hundreds of which of these?

Answer: Barbary macaques

This one's a particularly interesting zoo because the macaques found there are the only animals on the premises and are not at all native to France-- they're native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria and the island of Gibraltar, all quite far to the southwest. That said, nearly two hundred of these primates have a permanent residence on La Montagne des Singes, which translates to 'The Mountain of Monkeys', which is just a short drive southwest of Strasbourg in Northeastern France.
9. The only tropical zoo, housed in a rainforest in the United States, is found in which of these states?

Answer: Hawaii

The Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens, found on the big island of Hawaii, may be small but it's the only zoo to be authentically tropical, home to dozens of animals in their natural habitats. The zoo, also known for its rainforest flora, features a butterfly house as part of its larger complex south of Hilo and east of the Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve.

The zoo is only about fourteen acres large. Hawaii's largest zoo, in Honolulu, is about forty acres large.
10. The northerly Polar Park replicates ecosystems in which region of the world?

Answer: Scandinavia

Found in the region of Troms, Norway, near the Finnish border, Polar Park is a vast expanse of land with expansive habitats for local creatures, many of which thrive in environments found within the Arctic Circle. Because of the lack of enclosures and the expanse that the park is build on, animals there generally get more roaming space than any other animals in captivity in the world. Most of the animals kept at Polar Park are larger, to make use of the spaces, and have included moose, bears, and wild cats.
