Subject: What Song am I?

Posted by: Mariamir
Date: Nov 29 12

Following the same rules as the other "What ____ am I" threads, the point of this thread is that you ask yes or no questions until someone guesses the correct song. That same person then chooses the next song.

Fire away!

Okay. I shall be merciless here. I'm going for the obscure. Good luck....
This song was originally written for a 1960's musical but I am not interested in this original version. In the late seventies, a bunch of English teens recorded a ramped up, punky, turbo charged version which was included on their debut album. One of the best unheralded debut albums ever. Five words in the title. And no more clues for now, ha ha. I want to get great mileage out of this one.

Hmm. Is the band Sex Pistols?

No, oh great SFJ, the Pistol's album is definitely not unheralded. It usually makes lists of greatest albums. The album I am dealing with here never makes these lists but it's one that should. Here's another clue. In some countries, the album was released under a different title than its British vinyl pressing but this was standardised on CD issues. As to the song, the musical it was originally heard in featured a female star known for being a temperamental diva. She also acted in movies and directed one or two as well.

Was the diva barbra Streisand?

I knew that clue would be too helpful!!
Yes, Barbara S. I guess by process of elimination regarding individual songs from her musicals, the answer will thusly be revealed a lot sooner than I thought and not in 50 years time which I was aiming for. Not that I'm being mean or anything like that, I just like being a scamp. Keep plugging away.

Well cant be bothered trolling through all Barbra's songs - but the band sounds like Squeeze but cant think of a five word title (I think it was) ... is it them or similar ilk?

Not Squeeze alas. Different type of band altogether, more punk, funk, different guitar sound, great synth/keyboard sound. The song in question was a hit single for them. Lead singer has that punk type voice but more articulate.
Another clue... they eventually became more of a minimalist, ambient music band. Lineup has changed over the years. Yes, five word title. Even better clue...Streisand won Best Actress Oscar for movie version of the original musical the song first appeared in.

That's a great name for a band. No, it's not Duck Sauce. But is it the right song? Well it might be and it might not be. Keep at it everyone. I'm quite enjoying this.

Boney M? Take the Heat off Me?

It's a proper band, they were all teenagers, all male.
Okay, I'll get a move on here....think of weather for one of the words in the title.

But not heat. Opposite type of weather activity.

Is the band Cold Chisel?

I'll have to explain this again, but if you go back a bit, you'll see I already gave you the following clues.
A British band
The weather reference is in the title of the song, not the band.

And I doubt Cold Chisel would ever sing a Barbara Streisand song.

Gadzooks, I'll tell you the answer:
The song is Don't Rain On My Parade, the band is Japan.

Go again - we were just too thick to get it ... may be would of one day LOL

I'll pass it on to you.
Advice to players: before answering, scroll back and read all the clues and all the replies. If this had happened, I'm sure Boney M and Cold Chisel would not have entered the equation.

You asked for mileage - then got annoyed when the answer from us thick guessers didn't come up with the answer... Cant have it both ways. Therefore I personally am not happy to continue with this thread. Over to anyone who wants it.

Cold Chisel are Aussies. Boney M are German. That's not mileage, that's either not reading the clues or being deliberately incorrect. Don't know where you got this 'thick' nonsense from.

I think sectant, you are missing the object of the thread, the object is not for someone to remain in charge forever, and that is why those of us who have been playing for some time give clues so the rest can guess it. Not that we can show how clever we are.

Sectant didn't want to "be in charge forever". Not only did he reveal the answer, he just tried to hand the board over to someone else! Sectant was providing clues. He wasn't trying to show off.
Why do people get upset so easily?
This thread is starting to boil over. Please, let's not fight. Let's enjoy the subject of the thread: music.
