Happy to see Chemistry appearing in the GC again for this morning's set. Always enjoy it when it shows as it was my undergraduate college major. But 1464 is a bit low for me. Must be getting rusty. Reply #9841. Apr 26 22, 11:36 AM |

Graduated to Immortal with this afternoon's set. Seems like it took forever, but it was about in the usual time for me, though I had been concerned for awhile I wouldn't be able to get the graduation in before May. Now I just pace myself for these last couple of weeks or so. I always play up to the bitter end, unlike some who quit after reaching Division 10. There are questions you see in Division 10 you won't see in any of the lower Divisions. Reply #9842. Apr 29 22, 12:38 PM |

This is probably a stupid question (and as a teacher I know stupid questions DO exist), but please humor me: Does one reach immortality when they get TO division 10, graduating out of division 9, or when they get DONE with division 10? I've been trying so hard to make it TO div 10... I don't think I'll get through it. Thanks for your patience and help. SIncerely, Coffee Girl Reply #9843. May 02 22, 6:57 AM |

Nobody finishes level 10 - it would take even a good player several months, even supposing a game went on that long. It's when you reach level 10 that you become an immortal. Reply #9844. May 02 22, 7:00 AM |

My favorite Global Daily Challenge is “Score in the top 50% of a topic”. In fact, I like getting that challenge when it is the same challenge but for an hourly game. Reply #9849. May 04 22, 8:39 PM |

My favorite Difficult Daily Challenge time again: Target was 13,113 points. Actual total was 14,082 points. Another day at the office. Also, the number of Immortals in Normal mode is now at 38. We are getting close to the end of the run as the countdown continues. Reply #9850. May 05 22, 3:40 PM |

So, maybe some of you who have been playing GC for longer than I have can answer this query. Why don't the global stats match up with the division stats in division 10? Global stats rn (Friday evening) show that 97 players have now arrived at level 10, with 12 new immortals, yet the division stats show that there are 122 players who are now at level 10. I do keep playing, although I have to admit I'm ready for this GC to just be over! :) Thanks for your help. Reply #9856. May 13 22, 5:30 PM |

The Division stats include the Hardcore players. The Global stats are only the 'regular' players. Reply #9857. May 13 22, 6:10 PM |

That seems odd to me. Global seems that it should include everyone, not just the regular players. So, it won't end until there are 100 regular players? Reply #9858. May 13 22, 9:28 PM |

It has been that way for several years now. However, for us old-timers that remember how this evolved to what it is now, the situation actually makes sense. Years ago, the criteria for stopping the GC was that 30 *new* Immortals had to be created. This worked well for years with most runs lasting about four months. But as time went by, the percentage of players of the GC that had already gotten the Immortal badge slowly increased, which meant the percentage of GC players that had not already gotten the Immortal badge slowly decreased. The result was that less experienced players were taking longer to get to Immortal level as compared with veteran GC players. Waiting for 30 new Immortals threatened to cause the length of the runs to greatly increase, so a few years ago the criteria were changed to 100 total Immortals in Normal mode or 30 new Immortals, whichever came first, but recent experience has always had the 100 total Immortals in Normal mode come first, so this has been the new stopping point, and it has kept the length of the runs at about four months, consistent with the old experience. Had the old 30 new Immortals system been kept, the length of the runs would have kept increasing, and would probably be over five months long by now, maybe even six. The reason Immortals in Hardcore mode were *not* included in the new(er) stopping criteria is that Hardcore Immortals are a significant group of outliers that would have skewed the results, perhaps unpredictably. Hardcore Immortals used to be very rare, but as time has gone by and the percentage of veterans playing the GC has increased, so has the number of Hardcore Immortals. If Hardcore Immortals had been included in the stopping criteria, it would have required additional coding and would not have been transparent to the players. It also could have added or subtracted the length of the runs rather unpredictably as FT's most experienced and best GC players switch back and forth from Normal mode to Hardcore mode from one run to the next according to their own personal interests. No, it was smart never to let those outlier Hardcore Immortals figure into the stopping criteria from the beginning. The current system, which uses only the Normal mode Immortals in the count to 100, is remarkably stable and had led to length of GC runs around four months consistently for the past several years. As one of those outlier Hardcore Immortals, honestly, you wouldn't want *me* to be the basis for when the GC ends. It would have ended two weeks ago already. The current system makes sense to those who understand its history. It works well. Don't fix what ain't broke. Reply #9859. May 13 22, 10:17 PM |

Following that last note up, we now have over 100 Immortals in Normal mode. The GC run must be manually closed by Terry and a reminder of the current situation has been posted in the Discussion Forums. Hope this thing shuts down soon. I'm pretty tired of this run now.
