Kudos to the powers that be for coming up with another enjoyable game that makes F.T an even more attractive place to "hang".

I think I should run out and by a lottery ticket (any lottery). Why? Having never, ever, ever played DonkeyKong, not only did I win my duel, but I scored over 700 points. Pity it's raining or I'd be down to the corner store in a flash! :)

I don't think there's any logic to this. I used to play the games in order of preference but I found I won more games just by playing them in the order they're listed so I stick with that now. There are some games that lots of people are good at and speed and accuracy are crucial there. Obscure subjects are more of a gamble but always play them because your chances of winning are higher.

Flopsy, thank you so much for the clarification! I don't exactly "avoid" Triviaballer; I just dance around him. It's more delicate and artsy, don't you think? When I start dancing around 'with' him, be concerned.

I actually do think it's fun to play when I can see a powerhouse also playing, and then just try to "dance around them." It rarely works, but it adds to the thrill of the game. And also the agony of defeat.

These are all really interesting tips and tactics. But I can't tank intentionally, although I do see the strategy if I've already missed even one question. If I get completely lost in a topic I just do not know, I'll back out, though. Manga just doesn't interest me, and I'm certain I bore Manga to tears, whatever it is.

I tried to win the Big Fat Zero Baby Badgelet in the Impossible quiz by getting every single question wrong, but it's just too much work, and feels so wrong. It was kind of fun for awhile, but isn't everything? I don't think I ever even came close, and I'm terrible at that one! The harder I tried to lose, the closer I came to winning. It's an enigma.

I won in Donkey Kong too, Liz, and I wouldn't know a "Donkey Kong" if it walked up and bit me on the thigh. I only played it because it was the quiz of the day. Or I was on a roll. It's rarely worth it for me to play a quiz on a topic I know nothing about, although sometimes it's fun to know I'm making my opponent look really good!

On "Chocolate" day, which may have been "Chocolat" day, I thought it was the former, and had to switch gears quickly to the film. I know a lot about chocolate, but only recall a little about that film, which I did love. The book was better.

I love the idea of trying to anticipate the topic for the next day, and then playing a topic mash or two! That's brilliant!

This thread is a wealth of knowledge.

Robert, I gotta agree. Your misery is visceral. If you hate it so much, why not just stop and play something you enjoy? I mean, with 7 whole entire wins to go until you advance, why continue now? And so many people have tried to ease your pain, but I don't think you're listening. It's discouraging.

Just for clarification, in case answerman's explanation makes it sound like I sabotage my scores, I always try my best but am decidedly average at Duel. But I always find it interesting that players who seem so much more consistent at it in terms of scores fare badly in results whereas I do quite well but not spectacularly.

Grrr! I was playing a duel game in a subject that was a bit unusual and I had great confidence I knew the answer to a question. I was looking out for it but realistically you only have a few seconds to make a winning choice. I missed it because it was at the end of a line of verbiage and I didn't see it quickly enough so caved in and selected randomly. I lost the game but would have won if I'd found that answer. Why are some answers cluttered with so much irrelevant verbiage? I can only think it's designed to trick people into making a mistake. The games are not just about knowledge but also speed, tactics and sometimes avoiding pitfalls.

The questions are taken from quizzes, so the length will vary. Dave's tip, on the previous page, of increasing the screen size to 125% sounds worth trying. It will help with the longer questions which are hard to read in normal size.

Just to also clarify on my end I did not assume you meant you were tanking results nasty...I get the idea of it not always being wise to pick your strongest topics when playing a limited number of the matches if winning as many as possible is your ultimate goal. That is what I meant about the "advantage" of the regular player in duel. Bing able to pick and choose your plays.

My point was for a gold member playing all 15 matches earnestly, no such manipulation is available

'Donkey Kong' is a gorilla in the Mario franchise. He was a villain at first, but became the hero of his own series a decade later.

From a big fan who played it religiously in the 90s. I have all the Donkey Kong games (and Diddy Kong) and still play them!

Well, this is my achievement of the day, beating an American player rated just over 270 at television ( which has well over 50% questions on the usa telly). Sad ,I know ,but little things please little minds.

*blows whistle*

Wait wait wait...you cant say you wouldn't know a donkey kong if it....whatever you said he did to you down there...and then turn around and say "hey, doesnt he throw bananas?"

Elle if you and Donkey have a past and you need to talk about it, we are here to help ;)

I did get a banana question btw.

I too fall into the crowd of folk who have very limited DK play (and only the original game many moons ago which was little help here) and thus my, I think 600 or so score, was predominantly fed by some world class guessing

He throws barrels in every game and collects bananas. The only game he can throw bananas in is Mario Kart, a racing game (my favorite). In Double Dash his special power is the giant banana, which causes multiple spin outs!

Optimal strategy. Tank in games in which you are matched up against me. Go all out the rest. (No excuses about not knowing which games you are matched up against me ahead of time. I expect never to lose again to anyone who reads this thread or else be able to tell them they are not following my recommended strategy.)

I won Donkey Kong, too, although the only thing I know about it is that a Samoan player for the Seattle Seahawks taught my young son how to play it one summer when the Seahawks had their summer training at the town where we lived.

p.s., although I have read here many times that Duel questions come from quizzes, I know for a fact that at least two of my single questions have appeared (maybe more).

Haha Andy, I will try to keep that in mind, although predicting when I will be matched against you is only slightly easier than predicting the next day's topic to mash it up in advance to try and boost your score.

Interesting idea but all it would take for me is one day of spending 10 minutes on an "on this date.." history site...then however much longer playing the mashes only for midnight to roll around and:

"Oh, :( really? Terry went with The Beatles/Sgt. Pepper...not Helen Keller this year?...well that stinks."

To say it isnt worth it.

I just watched a documentary about the Bristol Beaufighter then played the 'Battle of Britain' topic. The first question concerned this aircraft, I'd never heard of it until now.

Single questions from Question Quest appear in the root topics.
