Subject: Soon: New reward system and more

Posted by: WesleyCrusher
Date: Aug 13 23

If you've been reading the right posts, you may have noticed that we've been busy behind the scenes. In fact, we're working on... big stuff.

While we're not quite ready yet to spill the beans, we'll say this much - a key element will be a new reward system to replace the current level system that has, over the last fifteen years, grown out of balance. Back in 2008, we had like 50 badges and point levels and badge levels were comparable. Level 80 was REALLY a lot.

As it stands now, top players have exceeded 250 levels - and almost all of that is from getting tier 1 on major badges. Almost nothing else matters - point levels are FAR apart once you are above 5 million or so.

Come September (we'll announce the exact date closer to release) this will change. The new system will give points some proper value beyond the first few again, it will reward gaining tiers, authoring, team play and just being active throughout the site. There will also be less of a distinction between minis and full badges - a differentiation we mainly made to keep levels from reaching 600 and above anyway!

Most of the back-end calculations are in place already - meaning you are already being tracked and rewarded for plays in ways you don't know... yet. But if you want to get a head start into the new system on top of what you've already done - gaining some tiers, playing a wide variety of games and authoring quizzes, questions and crosswords can do that.

Our end goal is to make FunTrivia feel a lot more like what it deserves to be: Not a random collection of quizzes and games, but rather ONE game pretty much like an MMO (massively multiplayer online) game- but one where you don't win by grinding character stats but rather where YOUR OWN skills determine your progress and success. All the elements for it have been there for a long time. We'll finally combine them.

(Of course if you prefer, you can keep treating things like a collection like you always did - you will still be able to play quizzes, win an hourly or work towards a GC title. But you can also look at the whole - and play FunTrivia.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Please note: We're announcing this early so you will know that we're working - and you may occasionally see things briefly not working as they should. If a problem should persist, by all means let us know immediately - major changes on a live system won't come without bugs.

Editors are already using the new system, so we hope to have enough testing to have a smoothly working version on release day that won't interfere with your play experience due to bugs. However, if you're absolutely bent on spending one month on THAT monthly you've been missing for ages and you know it's going to be tight, September might not be the best choice if you're worried about bugs. On the other hand, the transition might make players shift priorities and it could be easier than ever. It could go either way!

I would also like to ask you to not immediately knee-jerk react with a "rubbish" but rather wait until you've played with the new system.

Yes, it's always going to take some adjusting and a few players - those who have exclusively targeted high level by taking one tier of each badge and moving on - may find themselves in a less remarkable position. However if you're one of those players, you will also find ample easy opportunities to boost your tier count before the system goes live - so now is the time and you'll find it rather easy to catch up to your old status once you've harvested what should be ample low-hanging fruit for you!

I love new challenges too. I’ve been a member for 18 years and had a pattern of playing a lot for a while, then stepping away (mostly) for a few months. I was in a steady play period when COVID hit and while it might not have been totally mentally healthy to play 3+ hours a day, it filled the gap left by the lack of concentration that cut into my reading.

I hadn’t payed much attention to challenges and ranks before then, but as the stress faded, those are what kept me. I’d written one quiz way back but have gotten into authoring - in part for the badges.

"The only badge we will definitely retire is Centurion as its requirement "Level 100" has no more meaning."

I hope all Centurion- related badges are still achievable. I still need to crack that Centurion Conundrum :p

The new prestige system scores prestige in 6 categories.

You can see them in action adding up to my prestige total here:

Now *that* is the specific information I have been looking for. Knowing the points in each "bucket" and the total and the points needed is what will help me (and others) focus their activities more productively.

This is a great idea and it's interesting to see the prestige awarded for certain badges and tier upgrades. I did have a comment about the leveling. I know that a lot of work has gone into the ranks and the names for the ranks/levels and all. I'm wondering why it was chosen to have subsets (a-g) for a lot of the ranks. Wouldn't it provide more clarity just to have the ranks go from 1-100 or whatever the end rank is instead of rank 18 having six different ranks? The Guru level can still have six ranks (and different adjectives) but instead of 18a-18g it would just be 70-76 for example. A rank difference of 70 vs 76 instead of 18a vs 18g seems to better reflect the huge difference in prestige.

Both ways have advantages and disadvantages. Using the rank/grade numbering makes it clearer where there are major milestones (for example, the prestige difference to the next step is always constant within one rank - it only changes after you hit a new number, never a letter). Also, it's easier on the memorization - with some 20ish titles, you have a one for one match. You see that 17 is Virtuoso and -d means it's in the middle of it, even if you can't remember the exact adjective to go with it.

Both advantages are lost in a purely numeric system - which of course gives a more distinct progress, but then it was that way with levels and it felt to me personally that 207 or 203 wasn't much of a difference either. 210, 225. Those were my next goals ever since 201. But that's just me and I see how 69 vs 75 can feel stronger than 18a to 18g.

If more of a progress feeling is the goal, would having more ranks (and thus fewer grades per rank) at the higher levels help? It would be possible to replace the upper triads 13-15, 16-18 and 19-21 with tetrads each, although we'd be scraping the bottom of the barrel a bit for names. In this case, every rank from 11 to 23 would have exactly five steps. Only #24 would take a sixth step "Transcended Oracle" to make sure we hit #25 Muse at the 100th advancement (we want that for a future feature) without needing to mess with the low ranks.

Opinions? Discussion? Feel free.

One thing I’m not sure about (or may have missed). Are the letters steps within the number, or are they for how widely your prestige is distributed (if almost all points are from quizzes, you’re a, if you add games, it’s b, etc.)

It is steps (grades) within a rank. Grades unlock extra perks and change the adjective that goes with the rank. 17c is Elder Virtuoso, 17d is Grand Virtuoso. A 16e is more advanced than a 16a and has more perks.

I see my new status has just changed. I think I was 17e, but I'm now 19b although I haven't won any more badges or upgrades. Are you readjusting things, or have you just added in some elements that weren't there before (or is it an error)?

There are now 25 ranks instead of 22... and with one exception they cap out at e grade. No more -g and only one single -f. Insignia will change soon

Re: "Is everybody getting thier prestige score or just a selected few?"

If they're not, the game will be launching in full for everyone in due time. There are still being tests performed across the board.

So, I just played the current round of Fill in the Blank, and when I was scrolling through my answers, I saw "A rainbow of sparks erupts from your keyboard!!!" in rather large text next to an answer that pertained to this. No green reward text or anything, so I can only assume there is some animation that's not yet implemented, or this has something to do with the new prestige system. Any clarification? Last time I got this question in FITB, this didn't happen.

That might mean it is the 100th time you've answered that question in FITB. Or your 10,000 answer for FITB. Or something like that. What I've been doing is going to the Challenges page and reading what it says for the various badges. Some the info for the games has been updated that explains the perks we are slowly discovering across the site.

Yes, we continue to tweak ranks in the background, which is why they aren't visible in detail to anyone yet.
