I saw "The Death of Stalin" recently. I think it's out in the US from 9 March. It's a dark comedy about the farcical events during and after the death of Stalin as a bunch of former yes men jockey for power and compete to see who will be the next leader. The trailers play up the comic nature of the film and are a bit misleading I think as the film does not hide the terrible events of history at the time or the effects they had having on Soviet society. It's quite a dark thought provoking film under the surface black humour and you'll certainly come away knowing more about the history if you didn't know it before. There are some very good actors in the film including Steve Buscemi, Michael Palin, Jason Isaacs, Rupert Friend, Jeffrey Tambor, Paddy Considine, and Simon Russell Beale who may not be known to film fans but he's a great actor from the National Theatre. It was written and produced by Armando Iannucci who is known for other political comedies such as "In the Loop" and "Veep". His themes always seem to include mediocre politicians and officials behaving manically and desperately often trying to extricate from the messes they've created themselves. It's fair to say that his opinion of politicians probably isn't high.

P.S. Armando Iannucci has said he stuck to historical facts and a lot of the worst farcical happenings were true.

Two siege horrors:

Green Room - pretty standard siege horror fare, except for Patrick Stewart in the role of a villainous white supremacist, and Anton Yelchin (RIP) as one of the protagonists.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe - This is one of the best siege horrors I've seen in quite a while. Beginning with the discovery of an unidentified body at a crime scene, yet not connected to the crime scene. The body is delivered to the small town coroner whose son, a certified medical technician, assists in the autopsy. They discover inexplicable injuries and conditions as the autopsy progresses and things take a turn to the pranormal. Great tension building and atmosphere. It has its flaws but still ranked high in my book.

We just finished "Miss peregrine's home for peculiar children". It was a good movie, but if I'd have seen it around the time I read the book, I'd have been screaming. Too many artistic licenses.

I just saw "Game Night" and it was pretty good! Before that, I saw "The Shape of Water" which was also good.

Some from the past few weeks:

Crimson Peak - Guillermo del Toro wrote/directed so it was a visual feast and engaging story line

P2 - siege horror that actually had a smart victim who didn't leave behind weapons, utilized her surroundings, etc. Good suspenseful cat & mouse game.

Bone Tomahawk - Kurt Russell was phenomenal, felt it dragged a bit but overall enjoyed it (warning: one very gruesome scene)

Finally saw Maleficent and loved it.

Bury the Ex - Anton Yelchin - seen a number of his movies recently - just coincidence - but so saddened by his death. He stands out in a cadre of cookie-cutter actors.

Fido - because who doesn't want a pet zombie.

Watched "The Martian."
Book by Andy Weir
But if you've taken a lot of science in school or you teach science as Brian does, you have to suspend your science knowledge for a couple of hours and just enjoy the movie.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie. However, as usual for me at least, I enjoyed the book much more.

Hey Mark, remember me asking you about "An Unfinished Life" and our small back-and-forth? It's gone...

Was it controversial? I thought we were discussing a movie we had just watched?

I watched "Inception," again, and "The Social Network," again, because they were both on TV. "Inception" is amazing every time I watch it, and I think it's fun to listen to how fast everyone speaks in "The Social Network." But what he did to his friends isn't fun, at all.

Elle,
Our conversation (An Unfinished Life) was on the blog Nasty goes to the Movies. It appears to be still there.

There it is, along with "Jeremiah Johnson" and "The Revenant" and "Legends Of The Fall." Thanks, Mark, I couldn't find it anywhere. I knew there was kind of a lengthy discussion. You saved the day!

Big, Bold Bears -- very scary.

Elle, The Revenant is a wonderful movie, I don't know if you have the book, if not get it. It is so interesting to follow the route of Hugh Glass through his horrible journey, especially when you know the territory. You probably know that Hugh Glass first came to the west on the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Another movie was made on this story, "Man in the Wilderness" Starring an all time favorite of mine, Richard Harris. I used to show it to my classes in PNWH!

And I forgot to say that the book of The Revenant has a map included which you can use to follow the trip.

I love Hugh Glass and "The Revenant," Stephanie.

You know those wild river scenes? And the falls? And anything having to do with being chased through the woods by warriors on horseback?

All those scenes were filmed on the Kootenai River. That is One Wild River, and those falls are terrifying. The "running through the woods" scenes were filmed at the property where my sister lives, very close to the River. She kept all of that a secret for six months, because they asked her to, but the photos she has with her and the crew and cast are priceless!

Some of it was filmed in B.C., too, I think. Somewhere in Canada, maybe Alberta? The wild mountain scenes with lots of snow. I think Canada is so beautiful.

I do think Leo deserved his Oscar, and I'll watch anything with Tom Hardy.

Was Richard Harris in that film called something like "A Man Called Horse"? Do you know the one I mean?

I don't think I have the Hugh Glass book, but I do know about him and the Lewis & Clark Expedition. If I don't have "his" book, I have every other book like it.

I've just seen an old British black and white film called "Green for Danger" with Alastair Sim and Trevor Howard. It's a crime/detective type film and was quite exciting with some good lines from Alastair Sim as the detective. The only down side was when it got towards the exciting denouement, I realised I'd seen it before, but luckily I'd forgotten whodunnit. A good film for a rainy afternoon.

Blackdresss, I remember Richard Harris in "A Man Called Horse" but it was a hard film for me to watch. He was put through quite some torture.
