There is a town in Northern Queensland called 1770, apparently named after the first British sighting of the place. Reply #25. Jul 31 08, 8:59 PM |

wilddogfeather, I'm always struck by singularly inappropriate names for housing divisions and apartment blocks and the like. In my city there's an area called The Maples - and there are hardly any trees there, let alone maples! We also have River Heights, Silver Heights, and Waverley Heights and and the whole city is barely above sea level! Then there's Riverview - the river runs around the edge of the area and the majority of people living there would have to stand on their roofs to see it. Makes me wonder if developers ever realize how dumb some of these names are. Reply #26. Jul 31 08, 9:57 PM |

We have a small town called America in The Netherlands.. Apparently there are 28 places called Holland in the US. A little off topic perhaps, but: in New York a lot of place names are derived Dutch place names. from Harlem and Brooklyn, for example are named after the Dutch places Haarlem and Breukelen, respectively. vene, Probably from the fact that the Dutch settled the state as a colony called New Netherlands. New York City, the state capital, was initially New Amsterdam. Reply #31. Aug 01 08, 7:53 AM |

There's a place called Breedon-on-the-Hill in Leicestershire (England). Now Bree is the Celtic word for hill, Dun is the Saxon word for hill, so technically it's called HillHill-on-the Hill. Maybe there's a hill there. Reply #36. Aug 30 08, 2:22 PM |

Well done mjws, a triple there, possibly the only one in the world? I already knew Redruth (red in Cornish and English) and River Avon (English and Old English) and there are more I can't think of. That's going in my personal trivia vault now even though I can't claim working it out myself! Reply #37. Aug 31 08, 4:12 PM |
