Satguru, re your post #37 - which I only just saw. Avon (or more properly Afon) is not Old English - it's Celtic. The Welsh word for river is afon. Reply #43. Oct 07 08, 9:06 AM |

There is a place in British Columbia called Ceepeecee. It got it's name from the initials of the California Packing Corporation which opened a fish packing plant there in 1927. If you lived there you could actually say you were from Ceepeecee B.C. Reply #45. Oct 07 08, 6:27 PM |

Truth or Consequences was mentioned earlier . I went to highschool there . There are a couple of other towns in New Mexico with odd names . There's Loco Hills and just down the road from there is Maljamar , which I only recently found out the origin of the name . It seems the founder of the town , who was either an oilman or rancher , had three children named Malcolm , James , and Margaret and used the first two or three letters of each name to create Maljamar . Re: post l8 about T or C , New Mexico. We lived there a while and we were told that Ralph Edwards paid the city of T or C for the right to change the name to help his radio show become more well known. And each year he would come to town and lead the parade down the main street. They would have a festival and party going on. It is a pretty little town in the desert. The Elephant Butte Dam at one time brought many sportsmen to fish the waters. However, lately the water level has dropped and I don't know if they still have that many come from all around the world. In Arkansas we have several towns that are amusing to others. Toad Suck near a river holds a festival that attracts many each year. Romance, Evening Shade, Egypt, El Paso, Gum Springs, Tichnor,Snowball,Sage are a few more. Reply #50. Nov 05 08, 9:05 PM |

There's a town in Manitoba called Komarno which was settled by Ukrainian immigrants. I'm told that Komarno means "too many mosquitoes" but I cannot vouch for the veracity of that statement because my Ukrainian vocabulary is limited to five words (hroshi=money, moloko=milk, prybit=hello, prosh-chavay=goodbye and holopchi=cabbage roll). However if Komarno means what I'm told it means I deduce that the Ukrainian imigrants arrived in summer when all of our 50 species of mosquito are active. On the outskirts of the town there is a gigantic fibreglas statue of - you guessed it - a mosquito! Reply #59. Feb 21 09, 12:32 PM |
