I loved the book "Fried Green Toamtoes At the Whistle Stop Cafe". Even though Fannie Flagg(the author) wrote the screen play I can honestly say I would rather read the book. Most books really dont translate well into movies. When people read books we have a picture set in out minds about the characters and their surroundings. I will stick with my imagination.

I'm usually disappointed with book to movie. I've already made the film in my head! However, I did enjoy The Green Mile and The Mist. They completely changed the ending of the latter, but it was a brilliant change and much better suited to a film than the book's ending.

I like the Harry Potter films, but nowhere near as much as the books. They have to leave so much out.

With the Twilight series, I prefer the films to the books. Bella and Edward are two of the most boring, self-absorbed protagonists ever in the books but come across a bit better in the films.

Having read the first nine of the Sookie Stackhouse southern vampire series, I am disappointed with the TV series so far. I think the trouble is that each book would probably fit into a two hour TV special, but instead is turned into a 12 part series, which then has to be padded out with some pretty gratuitous sex scenes. They've introduced characters that didn't exist in the books and changed some of the existing characters' backgrounds and I find it annoying.

I agree Supersal, the series isn't anywhere near as good as the books. They are going to make a movie of the Gabaldon book "Outlander" that I've already told a friend she has to see first so I won't yell at the screen. And "The Lies of Locke Lamora" that I'm certain won't go well. I stopped watching the "Harry Potter" movies after the 5th, and I almost walked out of that it was so bad. If they can't do it well, they shouldn't do it.

I don't watch movies if I read the book first. When I read the book first, I imagine the characters and places to look a certain way and needless to say those will be different in the movie because it's someone else's interpretation of the book. I guess I don't like having my imagination changed by the movie.

The Social Network is based on a story book. I am watching this movie hopefully next week from Netflix.

Rosemary's Baby. The movie is the most faithful adaptation from a book that I've seen. There were whole PAGES of dialogue in the book that were in the movie!

I prefer the books over most movies...

If I can read a book faster than watch a movie, I think the production missed the idea. The Hobbit comes to mind. It is overly long and I literally can read the book from cover to cover before the movie plays. I think that is true for a lot of fantasy and sci-fi. I remember reading ST II: The Wrath of Khan in like about an hour or so. The movie tops in at over 2 hrs. This is one reason I never got into Harry Potter movies.

As for favorite books to movies- The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to the Wizard of Oz (though there are some noticeable differences).

The Keeper Of Lost Causes, from the novel by Jusssi Adler-Olsen, and Headhunters from Jo Nesbo's novel of the same name.
Any film which shows respect for its source material, as these two do, is fine with me.

Someone above mentioned Seabiscuit,

"Seabiscuit: An American Legend", by Laura Hillenbrand, Is one of the best books I have ever read. It had many interesting things in it than a movie could ever include. Much of it was familiar to me, because as a grade schooler I owned the 1/2 sister of Seabiscuit, War Bread, both by Hard Tack. Read the book, but also see the movie.

'The Three Musketeers' by Alexandre Dumas. The make it clear, since there have been many movies based on it, I'm talking about the Russian movie from 1978 starring Mikhail Boyarski as d'Artagnan.

'The Pianist' by Wladyslaw Szpilman. He is a holocaust survivor and he wrote the book about it. Roman Polanski made a film of the same name in 2002 based on it. Adrien Brody starred as the title role.
