Earplugs. Fantastic. My hubby can snore as loud as he can and I can't hear him. Bliss!

That last one came a while after basketball was invented. It was said that someone had to climb a ladder to get the ball from the peach basket, at first! Of course, the score of the very first basketball game was 1-0...

The Phillips screwdriver. The humble screw has been around for thousands of years but it took till 1936 for Henry Phillips to design a better way to drive a screw.

Libraries. You can get so many books, movies, CDs; a whole world of knowledge gathered in a small place, and what they don't have they can probably get for you. And it's all free.

Don't know if sneakers would be considered an invention, but you can't go to many places without seeing them worn by almost everyone.

The simple antiseptic to pour over a cut and the humble band aid to cover it. How many lives have been saved because of those humble items in the bathroom cabinets?
