Subject: New Style Ads

Posted by: alan56
Date: Nov 10 23

The new style of adverts that have been implented recently are a total pain. They are embedded as banner ads at the top of pages and in some rare examples in between questions in the actual quizzes. The problem is when your mouse moves across the ad it triggers the ad to expand and fill the whole page totally obscuring the questions. Now I know this post is going to trigger a flood of responses saying to become a Gold member and do away with the ads, but my point is it seems an odd marketing strategy to use ads that make the games virtually unplayable. It is more likely to drive people away and leave you with fewer players on the site which will reduce your advertising revenue as you are reaching less people. The worst advert for this is the one for a certain pizza company that has the same name as a game played using wooded blocks.

Yes, this has been mentioned in the Forums.

We have a new provider for ads, so there will likely be a bit of a period here as things are optimized for user experience.

Clearly we need to pay the bills, but the intent isn’t to scare people away either. It is a very difficult tightrope walk.

I encourage those who regularly use our site to become Gold Members, which both helps support our operations and gives you an ad-free experience, amongst much else.

I've noticed a lot more video ads (which make the site run slower in general), and the dreaded Google Vignette ads, which take up the whole screen. They most often appear at the start of a timed game, forcing a re-load and lost time. On 10 question quizzes, it is not uncommon to see three ads as you work your way down. All this is to say, the ad experience has gotten a lot worse, though not impossible to play through. It has, however, gotten to the point where if I hadn't been a long-time member of this site with a lot of accumulated points/rewards/etc., I would abandon the site for a better experience.

Thank you, I'm glad I found this thread. I did look but couldn't see anything on the forums.

I first noticed a few weeks ago, a little banner, something about privacy, on the private tournament I play in. It wanted me to consent to certain ads. I hit do not consent, and thought it would go away - but it didn't.

Quite soon after that, it started appearing on main site quizzes too. I do respond to it occasionally, but it still comes back. I suppose it wants me to say yes, send me all the ads you want!

I think the new ad provider needs a swift kick in the head before these ads get any worse.

Terry, doesn't advertising revenue support operations too?

The banner reappeared as I was typing.
"Privacy and cookie settings.
"Managed by Google. Complies with IAB TCF. CMP ID: 300"

The tiny banner just comes back, whatever I do.

And I've just had my first video ad. It started off as a little splash of colour at the top of the page, and grew to a large mouth filling itself full of pizza. Just as well it appeared just as I finished a quiz!

I am bearing with the 'newer form of ads', and looking forward to the pizza...

I have been telling I am not interested, but the ad still returns.

Still no pizza...

It is not advertising per se that I find annoying, I fully understand the site's need to get revenue in, it's the new style of adverts that have been adopted that is the problem. Previously the adverts were 'static' and you could read them or ignore them as you wished. The new style ones seem to be more of a 'reactive' type and if your mouse pointer strays onto the ad it springs into life, with audio that makes it doubly annoying, and takes over the whole screen until you can find a way of closing it. You can imagine the annoyance this causes on a timed quiz. I fully agree with Stonecreek that any new user experiencing this is just going to move on, which endorses my first point, what benefit is there to using ads that just drive people away?

Another thing the new style ads do:

When playing a quiz in HTML format, there is always a semi-transparent whitish ad that immediately stretches across the bottom of the screen. It takes 5 seconds for that ad to fully load, and give you an 'x' to be able to dismiss it. While this ad is up, you cannot use tab to navigate to the next question. It also glitches out fill in the blank questions where the cursor will not stay in the dialogue box for you to be able to type in. Hadn't seen that issue before today, because I guess I hadn't encountered a fill in the blank question early enough in a quiz till today.

I have seen the semi-transparent band at the bottom of certain sceens as well, didn't realise it was connected to the new ad issue.

Another new low with the ads: I had my entire Chrome tab crash because of a video ad (for Bounty paper towels) at the bottom of the Quiz of the Hour just now. My laptop's fan started whirring hard, and the screen whited out. All because this one predatory ad sucked all the CPU usage out of my device. Luckily this wasn't a timed game, but still - having an ad go so far as to crash your site is not acceptable.

The thing I have noticed is that ads everywhere on the phone,, but barely nothing on my computer, I think I know the reason why, but I will not say in case the ad people are watching.

Ok, multiple issues here. First I want to solve is this "permission" dialog to those in the UK/EU where these silly messages are legally required.

It should display once only. I just made some changes to some settings.

Those of you in these areas: are the messages acting how they should now? Is it a single message, and does what it say sound reasonable? When you give it your permission or not does it stay away for at least some time?

Terry, thanks for looking into this. I'm not sure what you mean by the 'permission dialog' so I can't comment on that, but there has certainly been a change for the better. The pizza advert that used to take over your screen seems to have been tamed and the white transparent band that appeared at the bottom of some screens has also disappeared, so the whole experience has definitely improved. Hope the other users who were experiencing problems are also seeing the changes. Thank you.

Alan -- ads are temporarily disabled on the page. They will be coming back for non-GMs. But hopefully in a non-annoying manner.

Really appreciate the slight pause of the ad onslaught! They're still there, obviously, but not nearly so prevalent. One issue that might be tied to the current "fix" being tried out: clicking Return to where I was at the bottom of a quiz has a 50-50 shot right now of just sending you to start the quiz again, rather than going back to where you actually were.

I'm in Australia and get them on my laptop, don't use the phone for playing.
Sometimes they are full screen ads, sometimes smaller middle of the screen.
Most times if not all, they come up at the start of a game which means the timer has started but I lose time by finding and clicking the X.

I have an ad blocker, but since the new ads started I've noticed large blank spaces at the top and middle of the quizzes, and a hazy line at the bottom of the screen.
