Subject: New Style Ads

Posted by: alan56
Date: Nov 10 23

The new style of adverts that have been implented recently are a total pain. They are embedded as banner ads at the top of pages and in some rare examples in between questions in the actual quizzes. The problem is when your mouse moves across the ad it triggers the ad to expand and fill the whole page totally obscuring the questions. Now I know this post is going to trigger a flood of responses saying to become a Gold member and do away with the ads, but my point is it seems an odd marketing strategy to use ads that make the games virtually unplayable. It is more likely to drive people away and leave you with fewer players on the site which will reduce your advertising revenue as you are reaching less people. The worst advert for this is the one for a certain pizza company that has the same name as a game played using wooded blocks.

I can understand that when people are on a tight budget, it's not as easy to get a gold membership as opposed to others who don't understand why it's difficult. I've been a gold member continuously since I started in 2014, with the exception of end of 2021 and most of 2022, I wasn't on gold or reg. When I came back I played reg. For most of this year, renewed gold membership a couple months ago, and WOW, it refreshed my memory on why you should put forth the effort to get gold.

I mean just look around at the amount of content that is available, and a very dedicated and appreciated group of people/players that keep everything running as smoothly as it does, and continuously keeping it fresh. (Catnip lol).
Granted it's all based around it's core of trivia, but if your here, you already know that. There is nothing else on internet or app stores that can touch what FunTrivia gold membership offers. So C'mon people, find a way, get it done, and after it expires, I would bet it's an easy 90%+ chance you'll be renewing.
My rambling is done, take care and good luck!

I could be a gold member but have always chosen not to as I simply don’t have enough time in my life to spend playing funtrivia. I just about manage to do the team games and occasionally when time permits I might even go for a badge upgrade or something. I’ve always accepted that the price for not being a gold member is adverts and have always been happy to put up with that. What I didn’t expect was the requirement to consent, to a vast number of organisations, to give access to whatever appropriate info Funtrivia has on me so that advertising could be targeted.

Yesterday, to get in to the site, I was required to sign up to a privacy policy which necessitated consenting to a list of vendors that my info would be used to target advertising as I understood it. What shook me was the number of organisations! 758 were the ones that consent was already ticked to make it easy for me but 59 of those you couldn’t change the setting. Had they been just for security reasons I would not have been quite so bothered but in some cases it was also to target advertising. Then there were another 630 I could choose to agree to. I perhaps missed it, but could find nothing to say that there was any guarantee that whatever info obtained would no be sold on. I’m not happy about this at all!

Thanks - I’ll look into that issue. It sounds like something is wrong there. We only interact with a single agency and they handle all ads. I’ll have them fix this.

For reasons best known to themselves, some do not or cannot get a gold membership here. They are well aware of the extra games and badges a gold membership will entitle them too. Some people have mentioned they cannot afford the membership.

Please *stop* telling people without gold memberships how affordable it is. *Stop* telling them how great a gold membership is. *Stop* haranguing them.

Thank you.

I have to agree with Mira. I've always been a gold member, but there have been years it was touch and go.

Not everybody can afford it. Not everybody feels the amount of time they can spend on the site justifies the expense. And, not everybody wants to become a gold member.

The concerns and complaints of regular members have as much right to be heard and addressed as those of gold members.

An interesting change has occurred! I have just had the internet go down so was required to redo the privacy policy. The other day I somehow managed to go straight into the ‘vendors’ list I now see. This morning a much more truncated list came up, which had I seen that before I probably would not have got on my high horse. However, there are still an awful lot of vendors showing on the vendors list and although I only looked more closely at a few of them I still didn’t see anything that guaranteed there would be no selling on of the information gained. I do accept that I might have missed it as there is so much to go through. I just hope that by ‘managing’ the options all the consent ticks really are removed.

My medium challenge is to play a 20 question quiz, getting 18 out of 20 on it. Unfortunately to do that, I need to venture into the quizzes section, where the ads are the worst. EVERY PAGE I click to, the semi-opaque banner ad across the bottom of the screen pops up. Five seconds of waiting before I can X out of it, and sometimes now a second ad appears in its place. It never was this bad, where every single movement either forward or back in the quiz navigation area makes the same exact ad appear, over and over. Its nigh-on unusable right now, as I am concerned via the sheer amount of ads that one will eventually be malicious. Again, been using this site for 15 years now, and it's never been this bad, never gotten me this close to just leaving and never coming back.

Stonecreek...I absolutely agree with what you've said here, it's getting very difficult, too frustrating and nothing seems to be being done to help.

Following on from my comments earlier about what is happening with my info, I now still have a concern.
What I am not sure about is the category ‘legitimate reasons’. Of those hundreds of companies and organisations, who checks to make sure their claim of legitimate interest is genuine and not a means to get around the rules? It’s quite a nightmare area, and having looked at the following, it looks as if I’m not alone in suspecting that some of these companies at least, have no genuine care about the consumers rights to privacy, only the benefit my info might be for the company. link https://superuser.com/questions/1624416/what-do-cookie-warnings-mean-by-legitimate-interest
Can I face laboriously switching them off each time though! A question still to be decided.

Can blocking the ads individually help?

Ohh dear. First and foremost if my earlier post offended or was hurtful to anyone I apologize, that was not my intention in any way. I've had too many stretches of time where a gold membership would not at all be feasible. I think After well over a year of playing on FT as a Regular member mostly due to it not being in the budget, (the longest continuous stretch I've had as a Regular member) then coming back and being very pleased with the new system, (after adjusting to it) I was more or less giving some praise to all the new additions than anything else.

I was thinking of people who were on the fence about getting a membership, with finances not being an issue. not "Haranguing" anyone who could not afford it. but I now see I should have been more specific and stated that right at the beginning. So take care and good luck to ALL of FT members, and I hope the problems that regular members are experiencing can continue to be resolved.

Hey, I didn't get a Harrumph outta that guy.........Harrumph Harrumph!! LOL!

The video banner ads at the tops of pages have returned. These auto play if your cursor strays over them at all, which necessitates closing them out before doing anything else. They also tend to be at max volume when they play. And, as they load at the top of pages AFTER a player clicks to start an hourly game, scrolling past them to get to the first question more often than not will trigger the ad to start playing, negatively impacting one's time. Even if you don't actually trigger the ad itself, just waiting for the ad assets to load costs 2-3 seconds of time at the start of a game, where the screen is just blue/the background color because it won't load the questions till the ad is fully rendered.

And, insult to injury: posting that got me a prestige point, but also loaded a Mazda ad immediately after which auto-played at the top of the forum post despite my cursor not straying over it. So many video ads just bog the site down, make it run slow in general, even in places like here where we're not judged on time.

I’m sorry to revisit this but I am being driven to distraction by the privacy and transparency message that is coming up every time I go onto a new page. Each time, I click on to manage setting and then Save Settings and Exit. Once a day should surely be sufficient, I can’t see any reason why it should be any more.
By way of example, I clicked and saved the settings 5 times from the home page just to get to here. This really is a nonsense:-€ Is it just me? If it is what is going on!

I think there is a bug in the newest version of Ad Blocker Plus that is blocking cookies. Do you use this?

To be honest I haven’t a clue. How would I find out please? I am very ignorant when it comes to that sort of issue.
