Subject: BINGO!

Posted by: kyleisalive
Date: Mar 28 24

We've heard the requests and we agree! Single questions need some attention! In addition to the refresh of the Lounge single question games, we have some new fun on tap, and for this you'll need to pull up a seat, grab a card, and play!

We're rolling out the numbers on AUTHOR BINGO today! Accessible from your Author Central page, this new game is single question-centric. You'll get a card of twenty-five topics and the goal is to create lines or whole cards based on the prompts. You simply need to click the suggested word or phrase and proceed from there, making a question with that key item in the question itself or the correct answer. Each card is a new set; no two cards are the same!

And naturally, there are badges for this one. Of course. ;)

That's OK, I'll just stick with the American spelling.

Sorry, got another question - I submitted a question for 'youth' but it isn't orange. I know you said the cap's been removed, but is there a limit for how many bingo questions you can do in a day? I think I've done 6 or 7 today.

Should not be a cap. What category?

If it's your question in the Literature queue (about Alice), the keyword 'youth' is in the info, so it wouldn't count.

Oh, my bad, I read the question wrong. Any chance I can edit the question and resubmit it?

I think the question needs to include the Bingo word on submission, otherwise it won't count. You *could* try messaging an editor to add what changes you want before it is placed online, but as the Bingo system is quite new, I don't know if it will count that.

I think this is why, on the very last step before submission, there is a confirmation message that says something like, "Make sure your Bingo word is in the question or answer text above!" with the Bingo word colored in green.

Bumped it back to you as a rejection, Kankurette. You should be able to edit in full and resubmit from your Author Central page.

Thanks. I've resubmitted the version that has 'youth' in the question.

(By 'answer text', I thought it meant interesting info as well as the answer)

My most recent submission hasn't turned orange even though it appears on the list of recent submissions and the required word is the answer. I'm wondering if I've spelled the word incorrectly. Is there any way of checking and/or getting it sent back?

Looks like you misspelled the word. Bumped it back to you.

Thanks Kyle. Realised that was the most likely explanation.

I'm really enjoying this so far! My new card's got some tough ones, so it'll be interesting to find ways to work them into the question. (I like that I got 'Cobain' too, it was his 30th death anniversary recently).

It feels really exciting to get that new card and see which words appear! Good luck on the new set!

Stuck on a word that you just can’t really think of a solid question for? Here are a few techniques for writing questions that don’t just ask you to define the meaning of the Bingo word:

1. Use your word as part of a title of a song, book, movie, etc. There are many works of art out there with diverse titles, so there are often many more possibilities to ask questions if you think about your Bingo word as part of a title. (But please don’t simply ask who wrote/sang/etc. something.)
Bingo word = “noise”
Q: Which 1985 novel by Dan DeLillo features a disaster known as “The Airborne Toxic Event”?
A: White Noise

2. Think of a name of a person/place/thing that includes that word. Similar to the first idea, you can take your word and be playful with it in the sense that it can have multiple definitions, including proper nouns.
Bingo word = “butler”
Q: Famed philosopher and theorist Judith Butler began teaching at what university in 1993?
A: University of California, Berkeley

3. Use your word as part of a quote said by someone famous. (Make sure the quote is sourced!)
Bingo word = “rival”
Q: In “Poor Richard’s Almanack” (1739), Benjamin Franklin wrote, “He that falls in love with himself will have no _____.”
A: rivals

Have any other ideas on how an author can utilize their Bingo word? Share in this thread!

Your first option, trident, is a good one

For example, tram, can become trampoline.

One of my sources for alternate words, and I will use the one above again, was to Google "words that include tram" and that will provide you with a heap of options

I would be careful about submitting words that are completely different from the original word. While making Bingo words plural, changing verb tenses, etc. is almost always acceptable, an editor may send back a question if it is totally unrelated.

With that said, at the moment the editors aren't privy to what the exact Bingo word is while we are editing, so we do just edit the question as it appears as if it were a normal single question. I would definitely say, however, that if an editor were to come across an example of question that was obviously trying to skirt the rules or game the system, they would have cause to reject it on that grounds.

Thanks for that clarification trident and apologies if my above post steps out of (I will call it) the “spirit” of the game. Whilst I can see rules/guidelines as to how we complete a Bingo Line or a Bingo Jackpot, I haven’t seen anything specific that indicates how I use the word provided on the card… apart from the fact that it has to appear in either the question or the correct answer. My confusion stems from the fact the blurb at the top of the page indicates that the word provided is merely a “prompt”. There was also advice that it could be embedded into a larger word. That to me didn’t indicate that there was only a single direction that the question could take i.e. tram or trams, rather than a trampoline. Going forward I will stick with either changing the word to a plural or changing its tense.

That said, I feel that there is scope to broaden the horizon of the words provided. I say that for a couple of reasons (a) the point of the game is to increase the number of single questions submitted to the site (b) whilst no two cards are the same it is possible for several people to receive the same word. Whilst some words will lend themselves to numerous questions, some won’t. Something to consider.

What I've been most apt to send back lately are question that are shoehorning in the word with no relevance to anything going on. Something like:

"Judy always brings a JACKET because it's cold. But Judy Garland was in what film where she wore slippers?"

And then the info being about historical Judy Garland's life.

Trying to get around using the word like that is pretty apparent.

I just ran into an unexpected problem when I added a diacritic mark (ç) to the word "facade". My card still shows the clickable link, though the question shows as submitted (though not yet approved). Could anyone send it back to me so that I can delete the question and resubmit it without the offending mark? I don't suppose the issue was caused by my putting the word into the plural form. Thanks in advance!
