Frederic Henry's character is based on Hemingway's own experiences. Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois.
2. Which nation was Lieutenant Henry serving in World War I?

Answer: Italy

Henry is an ambulance driver. In real life, Hemingway was rejected by the American army. He went to Italy and was the first American casualty on the Italian front.
3. What type of injury does Lieutenant Henry sustain?

Answer: His knee is blown up by a mortar

Hemingway actually did sustain this injury. Due to the injury, he is able to spend time in the hospital with his love, Catherine, the English nurse.

Answer: false

Henry loved to drink. He drank so much he got himself jaundiced and was sent back to the front. He is accused of inflicting the disease on himself. He declares he would as much want to have jaundice as be kicked in the genitals.

Rinaldi introduces Henry to Catherine. Rinaldi and Henry are friends and roommates on the front. However, their mutual love for Catherine never creates a conflict. Rinaldi never commits to any particular woman.
