Yes folks, having a Body Mass Index of 30 or more means you are obese. Anything over 25 is overweight. The index is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your squared height in meters, so a person weighing 80 kilograms at a height of 1.80m would just scrape by - 80 / (1.8)² is 24.7. Your doctor may be able to determine this using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), which is a fairly good estimate of your bodyfat percentage. Make a BIA part of your annual physical examination!

Ultimately, it is the difference between calories in and calories expended that will generate weight loss. One pound of body fat is about equal to 3500 calories, so to lose that in a week, you must take in 3500 fewer calories than you expend. That is only about 500 calories a day, or about 1 Margarita! Of course you should make sure your meals are balanced and your fat intake is not excessive.
