Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the fitness guru who has a series of exercise DVDs in the "Walk at Home" line, in which she leads participants in walking on the spot in their own homes?

Answer: Leslie Sansone

Leslie Sansone created the "Walk at Home" program, a low-impact exercise regime. It might sound silly, but it's more than just walking on the spot. She leads viewers through one mile, two mile, even up to five mile walking exercises, suggests when to pick up the pace and when to slow down, when to add in arm movements, when to move from side to side instead of just walking on the spot. Sansone's home walking DVD line includes titles such as "Walk Away the Pounds" and "Walk This Way!" She has also written books on fitness. Her general motto and belief is that the body is meant to move, so move it however you can!

2. Also known as a girya, which alloyed weight is not used in the kitchen, but for developing arm muscles, specifically through ballistic exercises?

Answer: Kettlebell

A kettlebell is formed from cast-iron shaped into a ball with a handle fixed to the top, hence the name, as the shape remotely resembles a kettle. Due to the unusual shape, the weights lend themselves to the development of bodily muscles through various ballistic or swinging exercises, as the majority of the weight pulls the hand down instead of being evenly distributed on either side of the hand as per the more typical dumbbells. The exercises tend to work the entire body, as typical exercises require the arms to wield the kettlebell in such a way as to force the entire body to exercise, thus reducing stress on the wrists. Kettlebells originated in Russia.

3. Which of these exercise products was advertised on TV by Suzanne Somers and works with the user squeezing their legs together?

Answer: Thighmaster

The Thighmaster is an oddly shaped thing consisting of two metal tubes hinged together that the user puts between their thighs and then squeezes their knees together. It was primarily designed to shape the thighs but can also be used for biceps and calves. The lovely Suzanne Somers of "Three's Company" and "Step by Step" fame was the product's main spokesperson and appeared in commercials for it in the 1990s.

4. Known variously as a GTS machine or Total Gym, this very versatile machine has the potential to provide a workout for the entire body, if used properly. What force is employed to allow the practitioner to use their own body weight to provide the necessary resistance?

Answer: Gravity

The gravity training system (GTS) consists of a glide board mounted on a tower, that allows for different board heights to be used to change the amount of resistance that is being used. Various attachments, including cables, elephant ear handles, foot boards, ankle restraints and more allow for a huge variety of exercises to be performed.

5. What is the ancient Chinese art of self-defense that is practiced today as a low-impact, flowing, stress-reducing exercise?

Answer: Tai Chi

Unlike the faster-paced martial arts/self-defense practices of karate, judo, and aikido, tai chi focuses on slow, flowing movements through stretches that are gentle on the body and are excellent for reducing stress. While tai chi was once used for self-defense, it is now a popular form of exercise taught at recreation centers and gyms. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is great for people of all ages and exercise levels because it "puts minimal stress on muscles and joints".

Question by kaddarsgirl
6. What name is given to the exercise device that looks like a large ball that has been cut in half and given a flat base?

Answer: Bosu

Deceptively simple, the bosu can be used to provide balance challenges, for abdominal prep, as an aid for performing bridges and planks and so much more. Turning it over so the rounded part is in contact with the floor makes planks and push ups even more challenging.

7. P90X is a really intense home workout regimen that works many of the body's muscles in a variety of ways. What is the full title of the program?

Answer: Power 90 Extreme

P90X is definitely not for those just starting an exercise program; it bills itself as 'extreme home fitness'. It was developed by Tony Horton and a combination team of fitness experts and marketing people. The program is designed to take 90 days, with followers working out six days a week. It includes weight training, cardio activities, martial arts and even yoga. The various exercises target different muscles and endurances; the idea is what the program developers call "muscle confusion", where activities are changed frequently enough to avoid the body adapting to them and reaching a plateau. The program has been very successful; millions of copies have sold and hundreds of millions of dollars have been made.

8. Step aerobics is a popular form of exercise that works out the lower body through various step patterns, and can be combined with arm movements for a complete workout. Which sport equipment company was one of the first makers of the step platforms, and lends its name to step movements?

Answer: Reebok

In 1989, a former competitive gymnast named Gin Miller, invented step aerobics. She had sustained a knee injury from continuous impacts resulting from gymnastics, and as part of her physical therapy did several exercises consisting of going up and down on a step or box. Step aerobics employs a platform, called a "step", upon which various movements are carried out. Reebok was one of the first makers of the step, which is now used in gyms around the world. For taller individuals or those who want a challenge, risers can be placed under the step to increase the height and difficulty. Popular steps include the basic step, L-step, Z-step, repeater knee, and straddle. It is perfect for burning unwanted fat around the midsection and it increases muscle tone in both the upper and lower body.

9. There are many common exercises for building up arm muscles. Which exercise requires a person to lie face down, full length, propped up only by the arms?

Answer: Push-up

Push-ups are exercises designed to exercise the arms without using equipment. In a typical push-up, a person would face the floor and lie prone, extending the arms out in front to touch the floor. Then, using the feet as a fulcrum, they would raise and lower their body by bending at the elbows. Different hand positions, such as varying the distance between the hands, work different muscles. Although the arms do most of the work, push-ups exercise other muscles, too.

Question by Mariamir
10. Fitness instructor Shaun T is known for his home fitness DVDs, including "Insanity" and which other title?

Answer: Hip Hop Abs

Shaun T, whose full last name is Thompson, is a trainer and choreographer. "Hip Hop Abs" was first released in 2007, produced by the Beachbody fitness company, and became the top-selling home workout DVD in the US that year. Shaun T leads the workout comprised of hip hop dance moves. It's billed as an effective way and fun way to lose weight and tone ab muscles without doing crunches or sit-ups. In "Insanity" (first edition released 2009), Shaun T developed an intense 60 day fitness training program similar to P90X. Both programs are sold online and through TV infomercials.
