Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who speaks the line "so foul and fair a day I have not seen"?

Answer: Macbeth

Macbeth repeated the adjectives 'foul and fair', used earlier by the witches, a clever dramatic hint from Shakespeare, to tell us of Macbeth's nascent wickedness.
2. Have the witches the power of life and death?

Answer: No

They could, however, make life mighty unpleasant, as they indicate in the account of the sailor on his way to Aleppo. "Though his bark cannot be lost yet it shall be tempest-tost".
3. Who challenged the witches "If you can look into the seeds of time ... speak to me"?

Answer: Banquo

The witches wanted silence to let their prophecies take hold in Macbeth's mind, but Banquo challenged them to tell his future too.
4. Complete Duncan's comment, "There's no ... to find the mind's construction in the face".

Answer: Art

This is a wonderful example of irony. Duncan had been deceived by the former Thane of Cawdor and was now making the same mistake with Macbeth.
5. Complete Lady Macbeth's assessment of her husband, as she reads his letter. "Art not without ambition but without the ... should attend it."

Answer: Illness

"Art not without ambition but without the illness that should attend it." Act I, Scene 5
6. Did Lady Macbeth intend to kill Duncan herself at one point in the play?

Answer: Yes

Yes, she feared her husband's nature and sold her soul in the unforgettable lines "Come to my woman's breasts and take my milk for gall". Later, she changed her mind as Duncan looked too much like her father as he slept.
7. Who spoke this line on the battlements, "How goes the night, boy?"

Answer: Banquo

Banquo had a sense of impending trouble, he could not sleep and walked with his son Fleance trying not to think of the witches' prophecies.
8. What stuck in Macbeth's throat as he left Duncan's bedchamber?

Answer: Amen

In their drugged sleep the chamberlains spoke their night prayers; from habit Macbeth tried to join in, but could not. This is another example of Shakespeare's skill in telling us subtly how goodness has been eclipsed by evil.
9. Which of these characters was not admitted by the porter in his comic role as the porter of hells gate?

Answer: Judge

Inverness, Macbeth's castle, has become hell. The scene is funny, in a coarse way, a relief from the tension of the murder scene. It is packed with dramatic irony.
10. Who discovered Duncan's body?

Answer: Macduff

Macduff is only introduced to us in this scene. He has to make a big impact so he really goes overboard,(I think),in his announcement of Duncan's death.
11. What fatal decision did Banquo make at the beginning of Act 3?

Answer: All of these

Macbeth cleverly got Banquo to tell him of his day's plans. It was done so casually, as part of polite conversation, that Banquo probably did not realise the danger he had created for Fleance and himself. This, compounded with his silence, sealed his fate.
12. What excuse did Lady Macbeth offer to the guests for her husband's behaviour at the coronation feast?

Answer: A fit

At first she claimed the fit was momentary, but when Macbeth began mentioning 'sights' she ordered the guests to leave in a hurry.
13. Complete these lines "There's not a one but in whose house I keep a ... fee'd"

Answer: servant

Macbeth, like so many tyrants, was becoming paranoid.
14. Which apparition upset Macbeth the most?

Answer: Eight kings

The eight kings were followed by Banquo who pointed at them for his. Macbeth knew he had lost his soul for Banquo's heirs.
15. News reached Macduff of his family's murder when he was in England.

Answer: True

"O sinful Macduff they were struck for thee."
16. What item did the mad Lady Macbeth insist on having by her constantly?

Answer: A light

Once she craved darkness; now she dreaded it.
17. Who was Seyton?

Answer: Servant

Do you think Shakespeare was punning on a certain name here?
18. Complete these lines "A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying ..."

Answer: nothing

Not even the death of his wife could move Macbeth to remorse.
19. How many people did Macduff kill at the end of the play?

Answer: One

Only Macbeth, to avenge his family's murders.
20. What reward did Malcolm promise his thanes for their help in re-gaining his throne?

Answer: Titles

They were to be known as earls.
