Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. By latitude, what is the northernmost point in the United States, excluding territories and possessions?

Answer: Point Barrow

Point Barrow, AK is 71 degrees 23 minutes north latitude. Before 1960 Northwest Angle, MN was the northernmost point.
2. By latitude, what is the southern most point in the United States, excluding territories and possessions.

Answer: Ka Lae

Ka Lae, HI is 18 degrees 55 minutes north latitude. Prior to 1959, Ballast Key, FL was the southernmost point, and Key West the southernmost city. If the territories were included Samoa would be the southernmost point.
3. By longitude, what is the easternmost point in the United States, excluding territories and possessions?

Answer: Semisopochnoi

Semisopochnoi, AK, in the Rat Islands, is 179 degrees 46 minutes east longitude. Prior to 1960, West Quoddy Head, ME, was the easternmost point. If the territories were included, and we measured from the center of the U. S. instead of by longitude, the easternmost point would be Udall Point, Virgin Islands.
4. By longitude, what is the westernmost point in the United States, excluding territories and possessions?

Answer: Amatignak

Amatignak, AK, in the Delarof Islands, is 179 degrees 6 minutes west. Niihau, HI, was the westernmost point only in 1959. If we included territories and measured from the center of the U.S. instead of by longitude, it would be Point Udall in Guam.
5. What is the highest point in the United States?

Answer: Mt. Denali

Mt. Denali, AK, is also known as Mt. McKinley. It was not named to honor the President McKinley, but as a tactic to get him elected. Mt. Whitney is the highest in the lower 48.
6. What is the lowest point in the United States?

Answer: Badwater

Badwater is the lowest point in Death Valley, CA.
7. The highest and lowest points in the lower 48 states are in the same county.

Answer: True

Badwater, in Death Valley, and Mt. Whitney are in Inyo County, CA.
8. The geographic center of the United States is near

Answer: Castle Rock, SD

Balta, ND, is the geographic center of North America. There is a monument near Lebanon, KS, marking the geographic center of the U.S., but that was before Alaska and Hawai'i became states.
9. Where does America's day begin?

Answer: Wake Island

I know the people in Guam claim the title "Where America's Day Begins," but Wake is actually closer to the International Date Line. Attu is east of 180 degrees longitude, but the International Date Line goes around Attu to keep the Aleutians on the same day as North America, so you could say Attu is where America's day ends.
10. The United States borders Canada and Mexico. What country is the next nearest to the U.S.?

Answer: Russia

Big Diomede Island in Russia and Little Diomede Island in the U. S. are less than three miles apart in the Bering Strait.
