Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are four US states that connect at one point, which is commonly called "four corners". Which four states are these?

Answer: New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah

There is a little place where you can park and then stand on the meeting point of the four states. Some other states come close, but don't all meet in one place. For example: Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky, and Illinois all border and merge within 100 miles of each other.
2. What is the northernmost point of the continental United States?

Answer: Angle Inlet, Minnesota

To get to Angle Inlet from other parts of Minnesota, you need to either cross The Lake of the Woods, or go into Canada. Penasse is an island and is just slightly north of the town of Angle Inlet. There are no roads on Penasse Island--only docks for your boat.
3. Washington D.C is the capital of the United States. Which state capital is closest to Washington D.C.?

Answer: Annapolis, Maryland

At less than 40 miles away, Annapolis, Maryland is very close to Washington D.C. Famous for the U.S. Naval Academy located there, Annapolis also calls itself "America's Sailing Capital".
4. Most states have some sort of irregularly shaped border. How many states, however, have just four straight sides?

Answer: 2

They would be, of course, Colorado and Wyoming. Utah, Kansas and New Mexico come close, but their borders are not all totally straight. Even though they look equal in size on most maps, Colorado beats Wyoming in land area. It has 104,100 square miles, while Wyoming has 97,818 square miles.
5. Many towns and cities in New England share names with towns and cities in the United Kingdom. Some of these were named when the British settlers first came over to America. For example, the name 'New York' comes from York, England. Only one of the large New England cities listed below is named after a town in England. Pick out the correct one.

Answer: Boston, MA

Many of the people who first settled Boston, Massachusetts came from Boston, England. Boston is named for St. Botolph, the patron saint of travelers. He founded a monastery in England during the early 600s and was renowned for his sanctity and miracles. Also please note Albany, NY is not part of New England, just part of the northeast.
There is a Concord in England, but it was not why Concord, NH was named. Concord, NH was named to remind them of the importance of the unity and harmony of its people.
6. Alaska is the largest state by far, with Texas as the largest in the contiguous U.S. (when speaking of land area). But what is the third largest state when dealing with square miles?

Answer: California

Alaska is certainly a giant with 656,425 square miles in size. It can fit all of New England, New York state, and all of Texas within its borders and still have almost 200,000 square miles left over. Texas is a distant second at 268,601 square miles.

The next biggest states are in the following order: California at 163,707 square miles, Montana at 147,046 square miles, New Mexico at 121,593 square miles, and Arizona at 114,006 square miles.
7. Chicago is known as the "Windy City". But there is a place in the U.S. that can boast one of the fastest recorded wind speeds in the world--not including that of tornadoes, cyclones, or hurricanes. Pick the correct place.

Answer: Mount Washington, New Hampshire

On April 12, 1934, Mount Washington, New Hampshire recorded a 231 mph wind speed lasting almost one full minute. At the time, it was the fastest recorded wind speed on Earth (besides winds from tornadoes). A tornado record, for comparison, was 301 mph on May 3, 1999 near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

There was a wind gust of 253 mph at Barrow Island, off the coast of Australia during Cyclone Olivia. but so far N.H. remains the king for wind during non-major storms. If you find anything saying different please let me know. Windiest cities in the US based on average wind speed are: Mt. Washington, New Hampshire; St. Paul Island, Alaska; Cold Bay, Alaska; and Blue Hill, Massachusetts. Sorry, Chicago.
8. Sometimes we carve our own geography onto the landscape. Odd-numbered interstate highways run north and south, while even numbered ones run east and west. What is the longest interstate in the lower 48 states? (Hint: It runs close to the same path as the longest route, which is Route 20).

Answer: I-90

Interstate 90 wins at 3,020.54 miles, running from Seattle, Washington to Boston, Massachusetts. Route 20 is actually the longest road of any in the U.S., going from Boston, Massachusetts to Newport, Oregon and spanning 3365 miles. Interstate 40 is 2,555.40 miles long, and goes from Barstow, California to Wilmington, North Carolina.

Interstate 95 is 1,919.74 miles long, covering Miami, Florida to Houlton, Maine. I-35 is a comparatively minuscule 1,568.38, going from Laredo, Texas to Duluth, Minnesota.
9. The United States has many natural wonders, including The Grand Canyon, Mammoth Caves and the Great Plains in the Midwest. Which state listed below is NOT considered part of the Great Plains of North America?

Answer: Arkansas

The Great Plains of North America are about 1.35 million square miles, and the West Siberian Plains are just a little smaller at 1.2 million square miles. The location relative to the equator and the flatness of the plains make this area the commonest place for tornadoes in the world. The Great Plains stretch across many states, from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains.
10. For the final question, we will talk about the General Sherman Tree. This is one of the largest living organisms on Earth, weighing as much as ten blue whales! Which United States location is home to this giant?

Answer: Sequoia National Forest

All of the locations above are in California except Acadia, which is in Maine. Giant Sequoias, which are close relatives of the Redwoods, are the world's largest trees. General Sherman is around 2500 years old!
