1. Small chunks of baked goodies can be a great treat on occasion, but NO, Ella, this one is absolutely not for you, because it can give you acute kidney failure.
Answer: Raisin bagel
Interesting Information:Raisins and grapes cause lethal reactions in dogs of all sizes. While the exact cause is still unknown, symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and most shocking of all, it causes rapid renal failure.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: No Begging Please
Some incorrect choices:
Glazed donut, Cinnamon roll, Peanut butter sandwich
2. How many chambers are there in a dog's heart?
Answer: 4
Interesting Information:The canine heart is very much like the human heart in that it has four chambers.

Difficulty: Easy.
From Quiz: The Canine Heart - In Sickness and In Health
Some incorrect choices:
2, 5, 3
3. A hotspot is a sensitive, warm and probably purulent (containing pus) area on the dog's skin. Most of the time the hair falls out from trauma and the area is reddish in color. What are other names for a hotspot?
Answer: All of these
Interesting Information:Hotspots have many names, but are basically the same thing. However, do not let this lead you to think that the same thing causes them all.
Difficulty: Average.
From Quiz: Those Nasty Hotspots
Some incorrect choices:
Acute moist dermatitis, Moist eczema, Pyotraumatic dermatitis
4. What organs are primarily infected by canine parvovirus (CPV)?
Answer: Intestine and heart
Interesting Information:CPV (as I will now refer to it) primarily attacks the fast replicating cells of the dog's intestine. In puppies there are cases when the virus attacks the heart tissue; cardiac infections aren't seen as often as intestinal ones.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Canine Parvovirus
Some incorrect choices:
Brain and intestine, Kidney and bladder, Intestine and spleen
5. What food contains theobromine, which can induce vomiting and cause seizures in dogs?
Answer: Chocolate
Interesting Information:As always, the amount will depend on the dog's size and type. Generally, 100-150 milligrams per kilogram is lethal. Rich chocolates (such as baker's and semisweet) is more deadly than milk chocolate. Caffeine also contains theobromine. This is among the most commonly-discussed warnings to dog owners.
Difficulty: Easy.
From Quiz: What Dogs CAN'T Eat
Some incorrect choices:
Sugar, Milk, Onions
6. What is the proper name of heartworms?
Answer: Dirofilaria immitis
Interesting Information:The name Dirofilaria comes from the Latin words "dirus", meaning fearful, and flium, meaning thread. The etymology of immitis is not mild, so when you put them together you get a fearful not mild thread! Sounds like a Dr. Who nemesis to me... The Dirofilaria genus consists of parasitic roundworms that are small and threadlike. While very small in diameter, the adult immitis worms can grow up to a foot (30 cm) in length. The adult worms are able to produce thousands of live young, called microfilariae, each day.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Heartworm Disease
Some incorrect choices:
Cardiac filaria, Filaria Canis immitis, Cardiac Filaria dimities
7. When a female dog is neutered, some people refer to this as being fixed but, more often, she is said to be ___________.
Answer: Spayed
Interesting Information:A general anesthetic is used and the abdomen must be opened, making this a major surgery. Despite this, most dogs are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed by the next day and are anxious to go home!
Difficulty: Very Easy.
From Quiz: Canine Neutering Surgery
Some incorrect choices:
Spaded, Sprayed, Displayed
8. The Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever suffers from a hormonal malady unknown in other breeds. What is it?
Answer: Early-onset Addison's disease
Interesting Information:Addison's disease, in which the adrenal glands do not work properly, is common in several breeds, but usually occurs in older dogs. In tollers, the mode of inheritance is unknown, but it is suspected to be polygenic. Tollers are the only breed in which the disease regularly appears in puppyhood, sometimes as early as 4 months. In addition, while Addison's disease in older dogs is very treatable, the disease in young tollers often does not respond well to medication and is fatal.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Breed-Specific Genetic Problems
Some incorrect choices:
Early-onset hypothyroidism, Late onset Cushing's disease, Diabetes insipidus
9. Many people give this fruit to their dogs as a treat. However, just a few bites can cause fatal kidney failure in some dogs.
Answer: Grapes
Interesting Information:Both grapes and raisins can be toxic. Some dogs eat them with, seemingly, no ill effects. However, some dogs become ill after ingesting only a few grapes or raisins. The first symptom is vomiting, followed by acute kidney failure, from which many dogs do not recover. As of yet, the toxin is unknown, nor do we know why some dogs become sick and others eat grapes or raisins without a problem.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Dogs-Don't Eat These!

Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Canine Nutrition
Some incorrect choices:
Protein, Essential fatty acids, Fat
12. Poor little Prissy, your female toy poodle, is urinating all the time. She also whimpers when she has to pee, and licks her private parts incessantly. You take her back to the vet.
How does the vet explain what is wrong with Prissy now?
Answer: It's a bladder infection.
Interesting Information:The behavior you're seeing in poor Prissy is typical of a urinary tract (or bladder) infection. It might even involve stones. Canine urine is usually sterile, but bacteria can still go up the canal to the bladder and cause an infection. This is more common among female dogs, like Prissy. In addition to frequent urination, infected dogs may strain to pee and only pass a small amount at a time. If there are stones involved (which adds to your pet's discomfort), the urine has a high mineral content that is crystalizing into stones that can range in size from as small as a grain of sand to bigger than a marble. Infections are normally treated with antibiotics. Stones are usually treated with a change of diet, surgery, and/or blasting them with sound waves to dissolve them.
Allergies might cause a rash or some kind of intestinal difficulty (but that would more likely show up in the stool and not the urine). Contrary to popular belief, when an animal's behavior changes regarding urination (so that it is more frequent and involves "accidents" in a previously trained dog), it is never due to rebelliousness or behavioral issues, it is always a health problem. There is no such thing as early onset canine Alzheimer's.
Difficulty: Very Easy.
From Quiz: How Would the Vet Diagnose Your Poodle's Problems?
Some incorrect choices:
It's allergies., It's a behavioral problem., It's early-onset canine Alzheimer's.
13. Green vegetables or fruits are full of antioxidants and minerals, but NO, Ella, this one is absolutely not for you, because it contains a toxin that will cause breathing problems, and possible accumulation of fluid around your heart.
Answer: Avocado
Interesting Information:Avocados contain persin in all parts of the fruit and plant. Persin is harmless to humans but is fatal to dogs. Classic symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and heart failure.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: No Begging Please
Some incorrect choices:
Cucumber , Celery, Bok choy
14. What is the common name of the atrioventricular valve that separates the right atrium and ventricle?
Answer: Tricuspid Valve
Interesting Information:The tricuspid valve separates the right atrium and right ventricle and acts like a set of one way doors. The deoxygenated blood returning from the body enters the right atrium. The tricuspid valve opens and allows the blood to flow into the right ventricle. The tricuspid valve then closes to prevent any blood flowing back into the atrium. The ventricle then squeezes and sends the blood to the lungs to be oxygenated.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: The Canine Heart - In Sickness and In Health
Some incorrect choices:
Mitral Valve, Aortic Valve, Gate Valve
15. This dog is showing all the classic symptoms of lungworm. He is most likely to have been snacking on what?
Answer: snails
Interesting Information:Always watch your dog if he's out in the garden on a rainy day. Angiostrongylus vasorum is a parasite whose larvae live in slugs and snails. The disease is not transferable to humans, but can be fatal to dogs and cats.
Difficulty: Average.
From Quiz: Vet for a Day
Some incorrect choices:
dog food, avocado, pasta
16. Sometimes vaccinations given to puppies against parvo are ineffective. What makes early vaccinations useless for a short period of time?
Answer: Colostrum received from the mother.
Interesting Information:The colostrum is what renders vaccines temporarily ineffective. This is a form of milk that is rich in antibodies that protect the puppy from harmful pathogens. As the puppy grows older, the protection from the colostrum wears off. There is a time when the colostrum is no longer strong enough to protect from a real parvo infection but is strong enough to fight off the vaccine (which is technically a dead or weakened version of the virus). This is why it is important to give multiple vaccines, so that when the colostrum wears off completely, the puppy's system can fully react to the vaccine and create its own protection.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Canine Parvovirus
Some incorrect choices:
Mucous layers in the GI track that protects the puppy., Special bacteria that the puppy receives from the mother., Puppy's immune system doesn't know how to react to the vaccine.
17. When a male dog is neutered, he may also be referred to as being fixed or altered, but is more properly said to be ____________.
Answer: castrated
Interesting Information:Vasectomy is what human males might undergo for birth control purposes. It could be done in a dog but all benefits of castration (other than population control) would be lost.
Difficulty: Easy.
From Quiz: Canine Neutering Surgery
Some incorrect choices:
emaciated, fixated, vasectomized
18. Cyclic neutropenia, an immunodeficiency that leads to repeated infections and bleeding, is found only in a certain color of dog. Which one?
Answer: Gray collies
Interesting Information:The disorder, an autosomal recessive, is often called "gray collie syndrome" for this reason. The disorder actually causes the color change in the coat to gray. It can be cured by a bone marrow transplant; this can actually cause the gray hairs to be replaced by normally-colored ones.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Breed-Specific Genetic Problems
Some incorrect choices:
Red Dobermans, White boxers, Black Labrador retrievers
19. Dogs who eat this may become very ill from alcohol poisoning.

From Quiz: Canine Genetic Disorders
Some incorrect choices:
Methemoglobinemia, Iron deficiency, Goiter
25. What are the funnel-shaped tubes in the kidneys called?
Answer: Nephrons
Interesting Information:The funnel-shaped tubes in the kidneys are called nephrons. Nephrons are responsible for filtering and reabsorbing the fluids that balance the body. Unfortunately, they can be easily damaged. Some of the things that can damage the nephrons are poisons, cancer, auto immune diseases and a genetic predisposition. In a healthy kidney, these nephrons filter poisons in the body. When a dog is born with chronic renal failure the nephrons have to work harder, even though most of them are dying, but the good thing about nephrons is that they are always replacing themselves. However, eventually the chronic renal failure gets to be too much for the nephrons and they can't keep reproducing.
Eventually the dog begins to emit the signs of this disease, but by then it's too late for the veterinarian and owner to do anything about it. When a dog has acute renal failure, the nephrons don't have time to replace themselves because the attack is so sudden. If acute renal failure is caught in time, not all of the nephrons will die. The kidneys can function properly with 25 percent of the nephrons functioning. If the nephrons drop below 25 percent, kidney failure becomes irreversible.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Canine Renal Failure
Some incorrect choices:
Renons, Blood vessels, Filters
26. What vitamin is not necessary in a dog's diet?
Answer: Vitamin C
Interesting Information:Like other carnivores, dogs manufacture their own vitamin C.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Canine Nutrition
Some incorrect choices:

27. Fruits aid in digestion, provide antioxidants, and give you healthy skin and hair. But NO, Ella, this one is absolutely not for you, because it can give you life-threatening seizures.
Answer: Plum
Interesting Information:The problem is not the fruit, but the pits. Pits from plums can cause obstruction if swallowed. Plum pits also contain cyanide which is highly poisonous. Cyanide poisoning include dilated pupils, dizziness, excessive salivation and seizures.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: No Begging Please
Some incorrect choices:
Blueberry, Canteloupe, Banana
28. What is the main blood vessel that takes the blood from the left side of the heart and carries it out to the body?
Answer: Aorta
Interesting Information:The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It has to withstand very high pressures as the blood is pumped out of the heart by the left ventricle. As the aorta proceeds through the body it separates to form other arteries that supply all the various organs and tissues of the body.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: The Canine Heart - In Sickness and In Health
Some incorrect choices:
Vena Cava, Femoral Artery, Hepatic Portal Vein.
29. This dog has a sebaceous cyst on her belly. What advice do you give to the owner?

Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Vet for a Day
Some incorrect choices:
bathe it in boiling water, squeeze it, pierce it
30. Licking may ___________ hotspot infections.
Answer: prolong
Interesting Information:Even though the dog's saliva has some antiseptic properties, the bad thing about licking (or biting) a hotspot is that it keeps it moist. This gives bacteria a perfect environment to live and reproduce, thus prolonging or even spreading a hotspot.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Those Nasty Hotspots
Some incorrect choices:
not do much to, reduce, alleviate
31. What contains thiosulphate, which can cause gastrointestinal problems, jaundice, and diarrhea?
Answer: Onions
Interesting Information:Onions and garlic should be approached with caution. Many dog foods contain garlic powder as a natural way to prevent fleas. Dogs do not have the enzyme to properly digest thiosulphates. Celebrity chef Rachel Ray caused some controversy when one of her supposedly pet-friendly recipes contained onions. As always, check with your vet to determine what foods are okay.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: What Dogs CAN'T Eat
Some incorrect choices:
Peppers, Spinach, Broccoli
32. Which type of animals do heartworms NOT infect?
Answer: Birds
Interesting Information:Heartworms only live between mosquitoes and mammals, so a pet bird would be safe from infection. The most common animal is dogs, but many species of animals can become infected including humans. Dogs are the preferred host of heartworms and, if left untreated, can live in canines for up to seven years. Cats are less ideal hosts as the heartworm can't reach adulthood in felines, but infestations can still be deadly. Human infestations are very rare with the human body not being a good host for the worms. In humans, the larvae eventually die off and typically are left untreated. The heartworms cannot reach adulthood in humans.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Heartworm Disease
Some incorrect choices:
Dogs, Cats, Humans
33. What is the most common hazard associated with a standard tennis ball?
Answer: tooth wear
Interesting Information:The standard tennis ball is too large to be a chocking hazard to all but large and giant of breeds. Being a non-food item, salmonella contamination would be rare and only the result of the environment in which the dog would already be exposed to the bacteria. The outer covering of a standard tennis ball is very abrasive to a dog's teeth. Many dogs have had their teeth worn down to nubs as a result. There are tennis style balls made specifically for dogs in which the covering is much less abrasive. They are a much better choice than "real' tennis balls.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Dog Toy Safety
Some incorrect choices:
choking, gastric blockage, salmonella
34. A neutered female has had __________________ removed.
Answer: Her ovaries and uterus
Interesting Information:Although female humans often have their tubes tied for birth control purposes, this is rarely done in dogs. I once had a female client who insisted that her dog have its tubes tied (and not be spayed) because she wanted the dog to continue to experience heat periods and "be able to have as much fun as she (the owner) did"!
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Canine Neutering Surgery
Some incorrect choices:
Only her ovaries, Only her uterus, Neither her ovaries nor her uterus
35. If a dog food is labeled "Chicken Flavored Dog Food," under US Food and Drug Administration labeling laws, does this mean it definitely contains chicken?
Answer: Yes
Interesting Information:The flavoring may be entirely artificial. Again, better read those labels!
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: What's In Your Dog's Food?
Some incorrect choices:
No, ----------, ----------
36. Found in many breeds, especially large ones, this is the most common inherited skeletal problem in dogs.
Answer: Hip dysplasia

Difficulty: Easy.
From Quiz: Canine Genetic Disorders
Some incorrect choices:
Legg-Perthe's disease, Craniomandibular osteopathy, Wobbler syndrome
37. When kidneys fail they can't adequately clear the blood of certain toxins. Which two toxins, as a result of the kidneys failing, are usually abnormally high in the kidneys?
Answer: Urea and Creatinine
Interesting Information:When kidneys fail, they can't clear the blood of toxins. Because of the inability to clear the toxins, urea and creatinine are abnormally high in the failing kidneys. Urea is a nitrogen-containing by-product of protein metabolism, and creatinine is a chemical by-product of muscle exertion. Failing kidneys produce diluted urine or urine that is high in protein. Healthy kidneys always produce urine that is yellowish and protein free.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: Canine Renal Failure
38. What is not a symptom of macadamia consumption?
Answer: hypothermia
Interesting Information:Macadamia nuts contain a substance not yet identified that can cause swollen limbs, paralysis, elevated body temperature, and tremor of skeletal muscles.
Difficulty: Hard.
From Quiz: What Dogs CAN'T Eat
Some incorrect choices:
depression, muscle tremors, ataxia
39. How do pets get heartworms?
Answer: Mosquito bite
Interesting Information:The live young of the heartworm, called microfilariae, migrate towards the skin of the host. A mosquito that bites the host will take in the microfilariae where they will go through the next two stages of development. The mosquito is a critical step in the lifecycle and the only way the heartworms can be introduced into a new host. The life cycle within the mosquito requires about 20 days at which point the larvae will be injected into the next victim of the mosquito's bite. Once in a new host, larvae at this stage are six months away from being a full-grown adult heartworm.
Difficulty: Average.
From Quiz: Heartworm Disease
Some incorrect choices:
Tick bite, Other pets by direct contact, Lakes or rivers
40. A neutered male dog has had ______________ removed.
Answer: His testicles
Interesting Information:The scrotum (sac containing the testicles) is not removed in a routine castration. In fact, the testicles are pushed from the scrotum through an incision that is made just in front of the scrotum. This is done because the skin of the scrotum is so thin and sensitive that the dog would experience greater discomfort and more difficult healing if the incision was made directly through the scrotum.
Difficulty: Easy.
From Quiz: Canine Neutering Surgery
Some incorrect choices:
His spermatic sac, His scrotum, His penis
