Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which rather small horse, known for its white coat and bull herding skills, is native to the marshlands of southern France?

Answer: Camargue

A prehistoric breed, the Camargue is technically a pony due to its size (about the size of a New Forest or Connemara Pony). It is still a crucial horse to the "cowboys" of the Camargue delta. In the age of Romans the horses were believed to be direct descendants of the goddess Venus, and their white coats to be from the seawater she was risen from.

The Ariegeois is also a French breed, but always has a black coat and is used mainly as a pack horse in mountainous regions. The skogsruss, or Gotland pony, is an ancient Swedish breed believed to be a direct descendant of the Tarpan. The Hucul is a Polish pony, mostly used for farm work.
2. Which of these breeds is claimed by its enthusiasts to be the naturally best-tempered horse in the world, and the most suitable for inexperienced riders?

Answer: Tennesee Walking Horse

The Akhal-Teke is known for having a rather stubborn, independent and sometimes moody temperament, thus making it a bad choice for novice riders. The Thoroughbred tends to be rather nervous and high strung, and Arabians, although famous for their gentle temperaments, are often too spirited and fiery under the saddle for beginners.

The Tennessee Walking Horse is excellent as a beginner's horse as it is calm, intelligent, gentle and patient, and is able to carry a rider comfortably over long distances.
3. Which of the following horses is hot-blooded?

Answer: Barb

The Andalusian, although a fiery and courageous horse, is warm-blooded. The Brabant is a massive, heavy cold-blooded breed used in agriculture. The Kabardin is a warm-blooded horse native to the Caucasus Mountains.

The Barb is believed to be as ancient as the Arabian, a true desert horse with its origins in North Africa.
4. Which Russian breed is almost always a rich chestnut color, noted for its remarkable stamina, and used to provide milk, meat and a fine, woolly fur?

Answer: Bashkir

The Budenny, while usually chestnut colored, is mainly used as a military or race horse, and has a rather fine, silky coat. The Orlov trotter is usually white in color, and is favored as a carriage horse. The Jekaterinburger doesn't even exist.

The Bashkir is known for being a good choice for people who are allergic to horses, as it does not shed, and its exceptionally dense, soft fur is used in Siberia and other parts of Russia to be spun into clothing. It is also noted for its stamina and hardiness, which very few breeds could compete with.
5. Which medieval breed originated in the Rott Valley in Germany and, despite its rather light build, was used as a mount for knights through battles and crusades?

Answer: Bavarian Warmblood

The Trakehner, also a medieval breed, originated in Poland and is now known for being an outstanding performer in dressage and equestrian jumping. The Knabstruper is a Danish breed, famous for its spotted coat. The Hanoverian, another excellent competition horse, evolved in 18th century Germany, and the breed was originally used as farm horses.

The Bavarian Warmblood evolved in 10th century Germany and was originally bred to be a heavy-boned specimen, used as agile but strong war horses or to do light draft around the farm. Breeders put great emphasis on a kind, even temperament and today are mainly focused on producing competition horses.
6. What is the name of the smallest horse breed in the world?

Answer: Falabella

The Falabella originated in Argentina, is bred purely for novelty purposes and often suffers from conformation defects due to inbreeding. The smallest specimens of this breed are only the size of a large rooster!

The Shetland pony is another tiny breed, used today mostly as a children's pony, but with a history of very hard work. The Suffolk Punch is a massive British draft horse, and the Murgese is an Italian breed, used mainly in farming or as a pack animal.
7. Which of the following breeds was bred in the 16th century to be an elegant saddle horse, but is now used mainly as a carriage horse?

Answer: Frederiksborg

The Frederiksborg, a Danish breed, is still occasionally used in saddle, but due to its rather long, straight back, is more favored as a harness horse. The Gelderlander evolved in 19th century Holland, and is a versatile breed, and also an excellent carriage horse.

The Selle Francais, or French Saddle Horse is used almost exclusively under saddle, and the Salerno, an 18th century Italian breed, is mainly used as a leisure riding horse.
8. Which American breed is believed to derive from 16th century Spanish stock that swam ashore the Virginia shores after a shipwreck, and still live in semi-feral herds on the islands?

Answer: Chincoteauge

Also known as the Assateague, these hardy ponies are believed to be the direct descendants of the Spanish horses of the conquistadors, and live in semi-feral herds year round.

The Morgan is the only breed in the world to descend from only one stallion, Justin Morgan, and is used in leisure riding, harness, as a farm horse, and before mechanization was the favored mount of the U.S. Army. The mustang, although descended from Spanish stock, lives mainly in the western part of the U.S. The Don is a Russian breed, famous for being an excellent, courageous cavalry horse.
9. Which of the following breeds is NOT native to Great Britain?

Answer: Alter-Real

The Alter-Real was originally bred to be the mount of Portuguese royalty, and is well suited to classical school riding.

The Exmoor pony is a very old breed, native to Exmoor in the south western part of the UK. The Clydesdale is a huge draft breed from Scotland, known for its strength and striking blue roan coat, often accompanied by blue eyes. The Hackney horse is also a British breed, excelling as a showy carriage horse.
10. The Lipizzaner is used primarily for which purpose?

Answer: Dressage

Lipizzaners are associated mainly with the Spanish Riding School, based in Vienna. They are known for their gray color and for their skill at the most difficult dressage movements, the so called 'airs above the ground'. They originate for Lipica, in Slovenia.
