Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Little Miss Muffett still sat on her tuffett. But, on Opposite Day, can you choose what the spider did while she ate her curds and whey?

Answer: He stood up, across the room from her

In the original rhyme, he sat down beside her. I guess if he did stand across the room, she might be frightened anyway. By the way, in case you've wondered, curds and whey are a lot like the lumps and the liquid in cottage cheese.
2. When Jack and Jill went up the hill, they went after a pail of water. We know Jack fell, but can you choose what happened to Jill on Opposite Day?

Answer: She climbed further up the hill

In the original rhyme, Jack fell down, and Jill "came tumbling after." At the end of this rhyme, the first aid for Jack's "broken crown" was listed as "vinegar and brown paper." This is an old remedy, and it used very rough paper, soaked in cider vinegar and then wrapped around the injured area.
3. Georgy Porgie was quite a ladies' man, even at a young age. In the nursery rhyme, he kissed the girls. On Opposite Day, can you decide what the girls did?

Answer: The girls laughed.

In the original rhyme, Georgie's kisses made the girls cry. Georgie was a selfish boy, because the rhyme says that, after kissing the girls, he ran away when the other boys came out to play. I guess he liked to kiss and run!
4. Little Boy Blue was supposed to take care of the animals. In the rhyme, he's told to blow his horn. On Opposite Day, which of these things happened to his animals?

Answer: The sheep were in the cornfields and the cows were in the meadow

In the original rhyme, the sheep were "in the meadow and the cows in the corn." Little Boy Blue's animals had gone to those places because he fell asleep under a haystack. I'll bet he got in trouble when the owner of those animals found out!
5. Little Jack Horner is still in his corner, and he still gets to stick his thumb in his Christmas pie. Since it's Opposite Day, can you choose the words he says, after he does that?

Answer: "I'm a very bad boy!"

In the original rhyme, he said, "what a good boy am I!" I wonder how he got the whole pie, but it's no wonder why he hid in the corner to eat it. I've never eaten plum pie, but I'll bet it tastes good!
6. This little piggy went to market. The rhyme tells us about the other "piggies", too. On Opposite Day, can you tell what did the second piggy did?

Answer: Went to the market with the first piggy.

In the original rhyme, the second piggy stayed home. People have been using this rhyme to count a baby's toes for many years, since it was first published in 1728. I wonder who first thought of that idea!
7. Tom Tom the piper's son stole a pig today. But it's Opposite Day, so can you choose what he does next?

Answer: Turns himself in at the sheriff's office

In the original rhyme, Tom Tom sole that pig and ran away. Some people believe the "pig" in this rhyme isn't a live animal, and that "pig" is a slang term for a type of pork pie. I hope Tom Tom hasn't chosen a life of crime.
8. Mary had a little lamb, and it followed her to school. Since it's Opposite Day, can you pick the color of the lamb's fleece?

Answer: black as coal

In the original rhyme, the lamb's "fleece was white as snow." Mary shouldn't be bringing her pet to school in the first place, but that's part of the rhyme. I do wonder how she trained that lamb to follow her.
9. Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep! The poor girl has no idea where to find them. The rhyme gives her some advice. Can you select the advice she got for Opposite Day?

Answer: Go out right away and look for them

In the original rhyme, Bo Peep was advised to "leave them alone, and they'll come home." It doesn't say how the sheep got lost, but no one seems to blame Bo Peep. I wonder how long it took for them to come home?
10. Hey, diddle diddle; the cat and the fiddle. On Opposite Day, can you decide what the cow would do?

Answer: The cow would duck under the sun

In the original rhyme, the cow jumped over the moon. I think it would be a lot of fun to see this rhyme come to life. A cat playing a fiddle; a cow jumping over the moon; a dog laughing and a dish and spoon running? They could book that act on any variety show!
