Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Known as "China's Sorrow".

Answer: Huang He

The Huang He is China's second longest river, after the Yangtze River. It is also called the Yellow River due to its muddy colour. The river carries loess deposits downstream giving it a yellowish brown colour. The Huang He is important in Chinese history due to its river basin being considered the birthplace of the Chinese civilization.

Despite this, it is also known as "China's Sorrow" due to the devastation often wrought by its frequent flooding.
2. Contains the "Ring of Fire"

Answer: Pacific Ocean

The "Ring of Fire" is also known as the "Rim of Fire". The term refers to a region which is a hotbed of volcanic activity and earthquakes. This is due to the plate tectonics of the underlying area. The "Ring of Fire" refers to the Pacific Coasts of North and South America, extending to the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia and some smaller islands in the Pacific Ocean. Note that this is not a scientific term and most of the activities take place independent of each other.
3. Sea with no land boundaries

Answer: Sargasso Sea

The Sargasso Sea is found within the Atlantic Ocean. It is unique in being the only sea without any land boundaries. The sea can be separated from the rest of the ocean by the seaweed Sargassum which gives it a characteristic brown colour.
4. Carved out the Grand Canyon

Answer: Colorado River

The Grand Canyon is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the state of Arizona in the US. This natural wonder was formed over millions of years as the Colorado River flowed through the region and eroded layers of rock. The Colorado River originates in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and traverses a distance of over 2,000 km before emptying out into the Gulf of California.
5. Important trade route connecting Europe to Asia

Answer: Suez Canal

The Suez Canal is a manmade waterway. At a length of 20km, this direct route connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea is one of the world's most important trade routes. Prior to its construction, ships had to cross the Cape of Good Hope at the tip of the African continent to make their way to Asia.
6. Considered the world's oldest lake

Answer: Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal is located in southern Siberia, in Russia. It is considered the world's oldest lake, estimated at having being formed 25-30 million years ago. It is also the world's largest freshwater lake containing more water than all five North American Great Lakes combined. Lake Baikal was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996.
7. Separates India from Sri Lanka

Answer: Palk Strait

The Palk Strait lies between the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. It connects the Bay of Bengal to the Palk Bay. Both the bay and the strait were named after Robert Palk, Governor of Madras during the British Raj.
8. Highest navigable lake in the world

Answer: Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is located on the border of Peru and Bolivia. Situated in the Andes mountain range, it is the highest navigable lake in the world. It is also South America's largest lake by volume and surface water. The lake is home to the Uro people, who create floating islands of reeds to live on the waters.
9. Birthplace of Egyptian civilization

Answer: Nile River

The Nile has historically been considered the world's longest river. It flows through eleven countries before emptying out into the Mediterranean Sea. The ancient Egyptian civilization flourished on its banks. The Nile was critical to the sustenance of the ancient Egyptians, supporting the growth of agriculture. It remains an important economic resource to the present day.
10. Home to the Great Barrier Reef

Answer: Coral Sea

The Coral Sea lies off the northeastern coast of Australia. It is considered a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean. As noted by its name, the Coral Sea is home to numerous reefs; however, it is most famous for being the home of the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system, and unlike the Great Wall of China, can actually be seen from outer space.

It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981.
