1. "Blue moon, you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for"

"Blue Moon" was written 25 years before it became a smash hit for a group of guys from Pennsylvania. Their version contained a lot of "bomp-baba-bomps" and "dip-da-dips", unlike the beautiful ballad version written in 1934.
Can you recall the do-woppers who took the Rock & Roll version of "Blue Moon" to number one in 1961?

"Since you've gone
The moon, the sun, the stars in the sky
Know the reason why I cry
Love divine once was mine
Now you've gone

Since you've gone
My heart, my lips, my tear dimmed eyes
A lonely soul within me cries
I acted smart, broke your heart
Now you've gone"
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. "Oh what a night
(To love you dear)
Oh what a night
(To hold you near)
Oh what a night
(To squeeze you dear)
That's why I love you so"

And so began, "Oh, What a Night", a 1956 tune, that when originally released in 1956, got to number four on the "Billboard R&B" chart. When the song was re-released 13 years later, it was a "Billboard R&B" chart topper, and also reached number 10 on the "Billboard Hot 100" list. The group who scored with "Oh, What a Night", had begun singing together in high school, and before their big hit they had been known as "The El-Rays". Question 4 of 10
4. Sing along and see if you remember these lyrics from 1960:

"Let the Little Girl Dance", was a hit for an artist who began his singing career as a member of The Four Bees, before going out on his own in 1955. Why's it takin' a mighty long time?
For me to hear from this boyfriend of mine

There must be some word today
From my boyfriend, so far away
Please Mister Postman, look and see
If there's a letter, a letter for me"

The group became one of Motown's success stories, giving the label its first chart topper. Originating in Michigan, they performed together for 10 years and were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004. Can you recall the name of these lovely lasses?

Ling a ling a ling a ling a ling, ding, dong
I love you, darling and I want you for my own
I'll give you any, anything that I own
You should have known, sweetheart"

Question 7 of 10
7. Regardless of one's age, most folks like to think back warmly about, "the good old days". In 1968, a teenage lass from the U.K. rekindled fond memories of times past, when she recorded, "Those Were the Days". The song reached the top of the charts in the U.K, and climbed to the number two spot on the "Billboard Hot 100" list. Can you name the artist whose recording of "Those Were the Days" has sold over eight million copies?

Sample some of the nostalgic lyrics:

"Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way"
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. "These Eyes" is a woefully sad song about lost love. It was recorded by a Canadian group in 1969, and landed on both Canadian and American best seller lists. See if these lyrics give you a clue:

Answer: The Marcels

The Marcels spent a brief time in the early 1960's spotlight, recording just about a dozen songs. "Blue Moon" was written by the legendary duo of (Richard) Rodgers and (Lorenz) Hart. Mel Torme had a big hit with the ballad, as written, back-in-the-day. The Marcels version, dip-da-dips and all, made it to Number One on the Billboard chart in April 1961, where it stayed for four weeks. It was also a chart topper in Australia, France, Germany and New Zealand.
The "bomp-baba-bomp version of "Blue Moon" has been designated by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as one of The 500 Songs That Shaped Rock & Roll.
The Marcels were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.

Here's a few more lyrics from "Blue Moon":

"And then there suddenly appeared before me

And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold

Blue moon, now I'm no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own"

Ferlin Eugene Husky took "Gone" to the top spot on the Billboard Country chart for 10 weeks in 1957, and it reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 list as well. Ferlin Husky has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

A few more mournful lines:

"Oh, what I'd give
For the lifetime I've wasted
The love that I've tasted
I was wrong, now you've gone"

Interesting fact: The backup group for Husky on "Gone", were The Jordanaires, who sang behind Elvis Presley for many years.

The Dells were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame that same year.

When Billy Bland's singing days were over he became a restaurateur, opening an eatery featuring soul food, in Harlem, N.Y.

Let the little girl through, she wants to pass by you
Buddy, can't you see she wants to dance with me"

The Marvelettes took the top spot on the "Billboard" list on December 11, 1961.
"Please Mr. Postman" was a million copy seller, and the Marvelettes' only song to crack the Top Five on "Billboard". They did, however, record two songs which made it to the Top Ten. They were "Playboy" (1961) and "Don't Mess with Bill" (1966). The latter, written by the miraculous Smokey Robinson, was another million seller. Both tunes peaked at number seven. Between 1960-1970, The Marvelettes released 10 albums and a couple of dozen singles. In 2013, The Marvelettes were nominated for inclusion in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

A little additional lyrics from "Please Mr. Postman":

"I've been standin' here, waitin' Mister Postman
So, so patiently
For just a card, or just a letter
Sayin' he's returnin' home to me

So many days you passed me by
You saw the tears, standin' in my eyes
You wouldn't stop to make me feel better
By leavin' me a card or a letter"
6. Answer: Mary Hopkin

The English lyrics to an old Russian folk-song were penned by Gene Raskin.
Paul McCartney produced "Those Were the Days" for Ms. Hopkin, who was one of the earliest singers to sign on with The Beatles Apple record label. Her first album, "Postcard", (1968), was a smash hit, making it to number three on the U.K. Albums Chart, and number 28 on the "Billboard" album list as well. Mary Hopkin spent most of the early 1970s on tour, performing often in Australia.
In the 1990s, Ms. Hopkin toured the U.K. with the multi-Grammy Award winning band, The Chieftains. As of 2013, she was still performing and recording albums.

Sing along:
"Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me?

Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days"
8. "These Eyes" is a woefully sad song about lost love. It was recorded by a Canadian group in 1969, and landed on both Canadian and American best seller lists. Answer: The Guess Who

Lead guitarist Randy Bachman and The Guess Who's lead singer, Burton Cummings, co-authored "These Eyes", (the original title was, "These Arms"). By the time they released "These Eyes", it was the band's 18th single, but only the first to make it into the Top 10 on the "Billboard Hot 100, (it peaked at number seven). "These Eyes", was track one on the album "Wheatfield Soul", and when released as a single, it became a million plus seller on the RCA label.
The Winnipeg formed band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1987.

Here are more of the memorable lyrics:

"These eyes cry every night for you
these arms long to hold you again

It is best known however, for being sung by a blind singer who took it onto both the pop and R&B charts. Who was the man with the beautiful baritone voice?

Answer: Al Hibbler

Although blind from birth (August 16, 1915), the Mississippi native managed to successfully pursue his singing career. Before going on his own, Albert George Hibbler had played with The Duke Ellington Band from 1943-1951. Later, he also sang with Count Basie and his Orchestra. Hibbler's "Unchained Melody" reached the number three spot on the Pop Charts, and also claimed the top spot on the R&B list.
"Unchained Melody" is one of the most covered songs, with an estimated 500 versions having been recorded. Among the artists who have recorded it are Perry Como, Elvis Presley, Liberace, Barry Manilow, LeAnn Rimes, Sam Cooke and The Righteous Brothers. In 1978, Willie Nelson had "Unchained Melody" as track five, side one, on his album, "Stardust".
* The Oscar was won by "Love is a Many Splendored Thing".

Enjoy some more of the marvelous "Unchained Melody":

"Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea
Lonely rivers sigh, "Wait for me, wait for me"
"I'll be coming home, wait for me!"

Are you still mine?
I need your love, I need your love, God speed your love to me"
10. Back in 1961, a quartet of Brooklyn high school buddies released a doo-woppin' tune titled, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". The bouncy song reached the Number One spot on the "Billboard Hot 100", on December 18, where it would remain for three weeks. After you check out the following lyrics, does the name of the group come to mind? "Wimoweh, wimoweh, wimoweh, wimoweh In the jungle, the mighty jungle The lion sleeps tonight In the jungle, the quiet jungle The lion sleeps tonight Wimoweh, wimoweh, wimoweh, wimoweh Near the village, the peaceful village The lion sleeps tonight Near the village, the quiet village The lion sleeps tonight"

Answer: The Tokens

When the group originally got together in the mid-fifties, they went by the name of the Linc-Tones. After a few personnel changes they changed the quartet's moniker to The Tokens. After a big break in the form of an appearance on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, they released their signature song. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", recorded on the RCA label, roared its way to numero uno on the "Billboard" chart and sold over a million copies.
The Tokens had a few other Top 40 hits between 1961-1973, including, "Tonight I Fell in Love, (1961), which reached number 15 on "Billboard", and "In the Midnight Hour", which peaked at number 30 in 1973.

Interesting fact: One of the groups original members left to pursue a solo career in 1957. His name was Neil Sedaka.

Sing along with more of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight":

"wimoweh, wimoweh, wimoweh, wimoweh

Hush my darling, don't fear my darling
The lion sleeps tonight
Hush my darling, don't fear my darling
The lion sleeps tonight"
