Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Atlanta Braves franchise was one of the inaugural members of the new National League in 1876. What was their team name?

Answer: Red Caps

The Boston Red Caps by name were in the NL from 1876-1882, winning two National League pennants. In 1883, the franchise found a name change to Beaneaters, and as odd as the name was, the team won another NL pennant in that season. They would win another five NL pennants before the franchise renamed themselves to the Doves in 1907.

After a couple more name changes, the franchise became the Boston Braves in 1912, then won their first World Series in 1914 against the Philadelphia Athletics. The franchise moved to Milwaukee in 1953, winning one World Series in 1957, then moving again to Atlanta in 1966.
2. The famous Boston Red Sox franchise began with the new American League in 1901, but not with the Red Sox name. What name did they use?

Answer: Americans

The trademark Red Sox name came in 1908, after they used the name Americans from 1901-1907. The team was also called the Pilgrims unofficially in their early days. The Americans won the first Major League World Series 1903 against the Pirates, with the help of pitchers Bill Dinneen and Cy Young, and also the bat of Jimmy Collins.
3. The city of Houston was given a new National League team in 1962. What was their team name?

Answer: Colt .45s

The Colt .45s name took hold for the franchise's first three seasons while playing at Colt Stadium. In 1965, the name was changed to the Astros and was a good fit to their new ballpark, the Astrodome. It would take 40 more years for the franchise to win their first National League pennant in 2005.
4. The Philadelphia Phillies franchise began in the National League in 1883 with the team name of Quakers. They kept that name until 1890 when they became the Phillies. The Phillies' name stayed with the franchise throughout the entire 20th century, except for two seasons somewhere in-between. What did the franchise change their name to for two seasons, and then go back to the Phillies name?

Answer: Blue Jays

Except for winning the National League pennant in 1915, the Phillies were pretty dismal, and in the 1930s, they lost 100+ games in a season four times. In 1943, the franchise thought a name change would do the trick. However, the Blue Jays' name for those two seasons found them losing at least 90 games both times, so they went back to the name of Phillies in 1945.
5. The first team ever to exist in Cleveland was the Cleveland Forest Citys in the National Association from 1871-1872. Which baseball team would be the next to call Cleveland their home?

Answer: Blues

After the folding of the Forest Citys in 1872, the city would be without a team until 1879, when the Cleveland Blues began play at Kennard Street Park in the National League. That National League team would play until 1884 before they closed their doors, never finishing better than third place. 1889 would find the new NL Cleveland Spiders put up stakes in the city.

The following season found the great Cy Young as a Spiders rookie. The Spiders went defunct in 1899. A new team emerged in the new American League in 1901, the Cleveland Blues. Changing their name to the Bronchos in 1902, then Naps in 1903, they became the Indians in 1915.
6. The Chicago Cubs franchise was a charter member of the new National League in 1876. They were named the Chicago White Stockings and won six of the National League's first 11 championships. In 1890, they changed their name to the Colts, but didn't have that name at the turn of the century in 1900. What name did they have?

Answer: Orphans

The franchise kept the Colts name until 1897, then played as the Chicago Orphans from 1898-1902. The Cubs name came in 1903. With the help of player-manager Frank Chance, the Cubs won four of five National League pennants from 1906-1910, including two World Series.
7. New York fans saw professional baseball for the first time in 1871 with the first professional baseball league, the National Assocication. They had not one team to root for, but two. One team was named the Mutuals, and the other was named what?

Answer: Haymakers

The Troy Haymakers finished in sixth place of nine teams in 1871, and one position behind their counterpart Mutuals. The team played at Haymakers' Grounds until they folded after the 1872 season. The Mutuals would also fold after the 1872 season.
8. The Orioles brought the city of Baltimore their first World Series in 1966 against the Dodgers, but they weren't always the Orioles. They moved from St. Louis in 1954 after playing as the Browns for many decades. What was the name of the franchise that it began with in 1901?

Answer: Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers lasted only one season, and the franchise moved to become the St. Louis Browns in 1902. The New York Yankees franchise began as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901, then became the New York Highlanders in 1903. The Yankees name came to view in 1913.
9. The city of Detroit enjoyed their very first professional baseball team that had the name of what?

Answer: Wolverines

The Wolverines began their endeavors in 1881 in the National League. After winning only one pennant in 1887, the team folded after the 1888 season. It would be another 13 seasons before Detroit would see another professional team. They were the Tigers with the new American League in 1901. The Tigers made three consecutive World Series appearances from 1907-1909, but lost them all.
10. The Royals showed up in Kansas City in 1969. What team name did the franchise begin with?

Answer: Royals

The Kansas City Royals were an expansion team in 1969, along with the Milwaukee Brewers, Montreal Expos, and San Diego Padres. 1977 was the first season that the Royals topped the 100-win mark, and won their first World Series in 1985 against the Cardinals.
