Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pat Summitt won over 1000 games as a head coach in which sport at the University of Tennessee?

Answer: Basketball

Summitt was named head coach of the women's basketball team at Tennessee in 1974. In a reign that would last for 38 seasons, she led the Lady Vols to eight NCAA national titles, and would win 1098 out of 1306 games played.
2. The Nashville Predators were an NHL expansion team in 1998. Who was their head coach in that initial season, who was still in charge during the strike-shortened 2012-13 campaign?

Answer: Barry Trotz

Trotz was a successful coach with the AHL's Portland Pirates before being named the first head coach of the Predators in 1998. In 2003, he set a new record for most games coached by the original coach of an expansion team. He led them to a first play-off spot in 2004, and their first play-off series win in 2011, vs the Anaheim Ducks.
3. Memphis is host each year to tennis tournaments on both the ATP and WTA tours. What type of surface are these tournaments held on?

Answer: Hard indoor

The U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships take place each year at the Racquet Club of Memphis. The first men's edition took place in Salisbury, Maryland, in 1971, with the tournament moving to Memphis in 1976; previous champions include Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe and Pete Sampras.

The women's edition took place in Oklahoma City between 1986 and 2001 before moving to Memphis; previous champions include Vera Zvonareva, Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova.
4. The Tennessee Titans reached their first Super Bowl in January 2000, where they lost to the St Louis Rams. Which Tennessee player was tackled one yard short of the goal-line on the game's last play to prevent the Titans taking the game into overtime?

Answer: Kevin Dyson

The Titans were formed in 1960 as the Houston Oilers before relocating to Tennessee in 1997. They were based in Memphis for one season before moving to Nashville the following year. In just their second season in the Music City, they reached Super Bowl XXXIV, where they were edged out 23-16 by the Rams. Kevin Dyson was tackled by Mike Jones at the one-yard line on the game's final play, otherwise the Titans would have made history by being involved in the first Superbowl to ever go into overtime (assuming the extra point was good!).
5. The St Jude Classic is an annual golf tournament on the PGA tour played in which Tennessee city?

Answer: Memphis

This tournament was first played in 1958 under its original name of the Memphis Open. It adopted the St Jude moniker in 1985, named after a local children's hospital which is the tournament's official charity. Played at the TPC Southwind course, the tournament's previous winners include Lee Trevino, Greg Norman and Lee Westwood.
6. Wilma Rudolph, from Clarksville, Tennessee, won three gold medals at the 1960 summer Olympics. Which one of these events did she NOT win?

Answer: Long Jump

Rudolph was born in Clarksville in 1940. She wore a brace on her leg until she was nine years old after contracting polio. She won a relay bronze at the Melbourne Olympics of 1956. Four years later, in Rome, she won gold in the 100 metres, 200 metres, and sprint relay. She did not take part in the long jump. She retired from competition two years later at the age of 22.
7. The Vanderbilt Commodores gridiron squad have normally struggled to compete against the powerhouses of the Southeastern conference, but occasionally there comes along a season when they give their long-suffering fans something to cheer about. One such year was 2008 when they defeated which team to claim their first bowl win in 53 years?

Answer: Boston College

Coached by Bobby Johnson, the 2008 Commodores hadn't appeared in a bowl game since 1982, and hadn't won one since 1955. A 6-6 regular season record was enough to get them an invite to the Music City Bowl in their home town of Nashville. A Bryan Hahnfeldt field goal late in the fourth quarter saw them edge out the Boston College Eagles 16-14 and end a wait of over half-a-century for a postseason victory.
8. The Memphis Grizzlies are an NBA team who were previously based in which Canadian city?

Answer: Vancouver

The Grizzlies were a 1995 NBA expansion team in Vancouver. In six seasons in British Columbia, they failed to have a winning season, and, more importantly, lost money. The franchise was moved to Memphis in 2001, originally playing home games at The Pyramid. A brand new arena, the FedEx Forum opened in 2004.
9. Which one of these Tennessee cities is host to two annual races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series?

Answer: Bristol

The Bristol Motor Speeedway was opened in 1961. The Southeastern 500 and Volunteer 500 have been held there since 1961, under various sponsored names. The track is famous for its steep banking.
10. Tennessee has had a number of minor league baseball teams through the years. Which of the following teams did NOT survive the 1990s, to compete during the first decade of the 21st century?

Answer: Clarksville Coyotes

The Coyotes were an independent team who played in the short-lived Heartland League from 1996 to 1998. The Redbirds and the Sounds both joined the Triple-A Pacific Coast League in 1998 and were still in existence when the new century/decade started. The Lookouts joined the Double-A Southern League in 1976 and were still there at the turn of the century.
Other Tennessee-based teams who competed in the 1990s and survived into the new century include the the Elizabethton Twins (joined 1974), Johnson City Cardinals (joined 1975) and Kingsport Mets (joined 1984) of the Appalachian League.
