Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Chicago White Sox ended 88 years of frustration when they won the 2005 World Series. Which former Sox shortstop was the manager who led the team to victory over the Houston Astros?

Answer: Ozzie Guillen

The White Sox had had last won the World Series in 1917, and their subsequent failure was often called the "Curse of the Black Sox", a reference to the 1919 team allegedly throwing that year's World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. All those years of pain for Sox fans ended in 2005 when they swept the Astros 4-0 to clinch the 3rd title in franchise history. Guillen had been an AL Rookie of the Year with the White Sox in 1985.

He took over as manager from Jerry Manuel in 2004, and won it all in just his second year in the hot seat.
2. Which tennis player from Hinsdale, Illinois was runner-up at the 1994 Australian Open and 1999 US Open?

Answer: Todd Martin

Martin was born in Hinsdale in 1970 and turned pro in 1990. He regularly made the quarter-finals or better in Grand Slam events throughout the 1990s. He lost to Pete Sampras in the Australian Open final in 1994 and to Andre Agassi in the 1999 US Open final.
3. In 2010, the Chicago Blackhawks ended a 49 year drought when they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers to win the Stanley Cup. Who was their captain, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the playoffs?

Answer: Jonathan Toews

The Blackhawks had last won the Stanley Cup in 1961, during the "six team" era. In 2009/10, they finished the NHL regular season with the second best record in the Western Conference. They eliminated the Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks in the playoffs to set up a meeting with the Philadelphia Flyers in the Stanley Cup finals.

The Blackhawks won it in six games, and Toews became the first Chicago player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy.
4. Which Chicago-born boxer won the WBC heavweight title in 1994 with a victory over Lennox Lewis?

Answer: Oliver McCall

McCall was born in Chicago in 1965. Turning pro in 1985, he fought Lennox Lewis in London for the WBC world heavyweight title. He upset the defending champion, winning by TKO in the second round. He lost his title to another British boxer, Frank Bruno, in 1995.
5. The Chicago Bears won their only Superbowl of the 20th cenury in January, 1986. Which quarterback led them to victory over the New England Patriots?

Answer: Jim McMahon

The Bears finished the 1985/86 regular season with a 15-1 record, then proceeded to shut out both the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams in the play-offs. In New Orleans, they won Superbowl XX with a convincing 46-10 victory over the Patriots. As well as the outspoken McMahon, stars of the Bears team included running back Walter Payton, defensive end Richard Dent and defensive lineman William "The Refrigirator" Perry.
6. Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois was, in 2013, the home venue of which one of these sports teams?

Answer: Chicago Fire

The Chicago Fire are a Major League Soccer team who began play in 1998. Toyota Park is a soccer-specific stadium which opened in 2006, and is located in Bridgeview, around 13 miles southwest of downtown Chicago.
7. The Chicago Bulls were the dominant franchise in the NBA during the 1990s, winning six championships. Which one of these teams did they NOT defeat in the finals during this decade?

Answer: San Antonio Spurs

Coached by Phil Jackson, and with a certain Michael Jordan playing at shooting guard, the Bulls were head and shoulders above the rest of the NBA during the majority of the 1990s. They won their first title in 1991, defeating the Lakers. Victories over the Portland Trail Blazers in 1992 and the Suns in 1993 gave them their first "threepeat".

After a two-year hiatus while Jordan played baseball, the Bulls won another three straight titles between 1996 and 1998, with victories in the finals over the Seattle Supersonics in 1996 and the Jazz in both 1997 and 1998. Jackson and Jordan both left the team after the '98 triumph, and the team's fortunes slumped dramatically.
8. Which Illinois golf course hosted the 2012 Ryder Cup?

Answer: Medinah

Medinah Country Club is located just under 30 miles from downtown Chicago. In 2012, it was the host as Europe defeated the USA in one of the greatest comebacks in Ryder Cup history. The club was also the venue for three US Opens during the 20th century, whilst Tiger Woods won the PGA championship there in both 1999 and 2006.
9. The Chicago Cubs won their second consecutive World Series in 1908, but failed to win another one during the next 100 years. What type of animal did some Cubs fans blame for this drought?

Answer: Goat

The "Curse of the Billy Goat" refers to an incident at the 1945 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and Detoit Tigers. A Cubs fan called Billy Sianis brought his goat along to Wrigley field for game four (yes, really!), and was told to remove it because of its smell.

He uttered a curse to the effect that the Cubs would lose not only that year's Series, but would never win one again. The Tigers won that game and went on to clinch the Series.
10. Which city would you need to visit if you wanted to watch the University of Illinois playing a home game in football or basketball (or any other sport for that matter!)?

Answer: Champaign-Urbana

Champaign-Urbana is a metropolitan area in east-central Illinois which has been home to the University of Illinois since 1867. The Fighting Illini are members of the Big Ten Conference. The school has won national championships in numerous sports, including men's gymnastics and tennis.
