Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It is possible that you've seen Tropius on someone's team before. Depending on where you live, however, this is either a common occurrence, or you'd assume Tropius became extinct. In what part of the world can players catch Tropius?

Answer: Africa

In Africa, Tropius is a fairly uncommon encounter- one that a player could get in droves if they spent roughly a week in Africa. Outside of Africa, players might not know Tropius even exists, as it simply will not appear outside of Africa.
2. Mega Sceptile boasts the highest DPS out of any Mega Grass type in the game. However, it is also capable of facilitating a different typing via its Mega Bonus. Apart from Grass, what type will be buffed once Mega Sceptile enters play?

Answer: Dragon

Mega Sceptile's part-Dragon typing inherited upon Mega Evolution enables it to also buff fellow Dragons. Mega Sceptile sadly does not learn a Dragon type Fast move however, so it is very much outclassed by Mega Dragons who have Dragon movesets.
3. Virizion has appeared in gyms quite a fair bit as a Tier 5 Legendary Raid Boss. There are a myriad of these, but Virizion is a unique challenge as a T5 players could potentially solo. It is a very, very difficult solo that absolutely requires the player have this Pokemon ready to go. What Mega Evolution is needed to take on Virizion without the need of other players?

Answer: Mega Rayquaza

Mega Pidgeot is a very, very strong option for this raid, and so would either of the Mega Mewtwo forms. However, they fall just short of having the DPS needed to solo Virizion. The absolute king of "Pokemon GO" will need to step down from its throne to take this one, as Mega Rayquaza barely has the DPS needed to solo Virizion- and it stands alone in that distinction.

In order to defeat Virizion alone, the player must make a team consisting of nothing but a single Mega Rayquaza- from there, once Mega Rayquaza faints, the player must heal it back up and get back to the fight. If done properly, they will need to re-enter twice and they'll have roughly seven seconds left on the clock if everything goes according to plan.
4. When it first came to the game, Roserade was merely decent in PvE and completely toothless in PvP. It would go on to receive a litany of new moves down the stretch that helped it significantly in both settings. What is one Grass type move Roserade gained access to?

Answer: Grass Knot

When it first released, Roserade's only Grass type moves were Razor Leaf for a Fast move and Solar Beam for a Charged move- not bad, but two slow moves don't complement Roserade's fragility very well at all. Down the road, Roserade would receive access to Magical Leaf and Grass Knot- still heavy hitters that were significantly faster.

Roserade would also gain Bullet Seed and Weather Ball (Fire), though the former was completely outclassed and the latter was only worth using in PvP, where it was at least quite helpful.
5. At first glance, Vileplume appears completely outclassed by Victreebel and not worth using. However, Vileplume has one trick up its sleeve that can send Dragons, Dark types and Fighters packing - what move of the following can Vileplume learn?

Answer: Moonblast

Moonblast is a powerful but sluggish one barred move that is only of use on Vileplume in PvP. Here, Vileplume can take advantage of the many Darks or Dragons roaming around Ultra League, or all the Fighting types across any league, and use Moonblast to defeat many of them.

However, this does compound Vileplume's Fire weakness, as Fire types will also resist Moonblast in addition to Vileplume's Grass moves.
6. Tier 4 Raid bosses are typically exceptionally difficult, but possible, to solo. They also tend to offer much more leeway than T5 Virizion in doing so. Shiftry is one T4 who is a possible solo, but only if the trainer is packing a team predominantly composed of what type attacker?

Answer: Bug

Even in Sunny or Clear weather, Fire types lack the DPS if their trainer chooses to duel Shiftry alone. The team will need to mainly consist of Bug types, as this is what the Grass/Dark Shiftry is 4x weak to. They must be careful of a Shiftry with Hurricane however, as most Bugs are weak to the move.
7. Though it is not a Grass type, Primal Groudon can be extremely useful to Grass-based teams. When included on the same team as Grass types, what will Primal Groudon do to benefit them?

Answer: Buff their moves

Even if not actively in combat, simply including Primal Groudon will buff the entire team's Fire, Grass and Ground type moves. If attempting to fight a Ground or Water type, even if Primal Groudon would be suboptimal against the boss, it can still greatly help its far more optimized teammates by simply existing on the team.
8. On the subject of Groudon - it initially came out at a time when good, quality Grass types were sparse and the mover of continents had access to Solar Beam. This made Groudon out to be a surprisingly high tier Grass attacker for a time. Which Grass type of the following can outperform Groudon in this role?

Answer: Kartana

Even though it lacks a Grass type Fast move, Groudon's stats are so huge that even just equipping Solar Beam for a Charged move is enough to make it effective. Kartana's higher Attack stat, Grass typing and superior moveset does make it a lot better, but there's no shame in being outclassed by an actual Grass type legendary.
9. The infamous Magical Leaf Glitch impacted one Mythical- this Pokemon came to some trainers with Magical Leaf and, to some, Magical Leaf didn't even exist in its moveset for some bizarre glitch-related reason. What Pokemon did this impact?

Answer: Shaymin-S

Even to this day, there has never been an official explanation from Niantic as to what happened exactly. However, Shaymin entered the game in 2021, and it would take all the way to 2024 for the error to finally be corrected.

It was good that it got corrected eventually, but it was a day late and a dollar short. Had Shaymin-S properly launched for everyone with Magical Leaf from the get go, it would have been the second best Grass attacker in the game. And it was, for some people. But for others, Shaymin-S was sadly completely terrible, as it did not have a good Fast move aside from Magical Leaf. In 2024, Shaymin found itself being leapfrogged, even with Magical Leaf, to the point of being a fringe top 10- still really good, but not "meta" any longer.
10. For the longest while, Tier 4 raids were entertaining solo exercises for adventurous players. Not all are/were even possible to solo, but the first documented instance of a T4 solo came against a Grass type. What Grass type?

Answer: Shiftry

Surprisingly, this raid was the lowly Bug type's time to shine, as Shiftry's 4x weakness to Bug meant it could really only be soloed by teams predominantly consisting of Bug types. However, Shiftry's access to Hurricane and the hard hitting Foul Play meant simply throwing Bugs onto a team and calling it a day would not do- the team must be fairly carefully picked, and the player must take care to dodge Hurricane if applicable.
