Ewan, the Duke of Claibourne had been bragging to Brion for weeks about how good the hounds were. It was a huge source of merriment to all, except Ewan, how rash and undisciplined the hounds really were. Of course part of the problem may have been magical mischief caused by Charissa. Sean and Alaric were together in the border marches and not actually present at the hunt, and although Rogier was he did not own the hounds.

Hrorik was the first major casualty and possibly was targeted by Miklos and Marek as retribution to his taking Sudrey of Rhorau, who was a cousin to Marek, as his wife. Lochalyn was the seat of Hrorik, while Carthane and Desse were located in the south.

Collin had no idea he had been duped into giving Brion the wine. Merasha doesn't affect humans, except to cause slight drowsiness, so Brion's advisors and friends, being all human, were unaffected. Ian and Mustafa were involved in the plot but he wanted to make sure he was not suspected in the tampering of the wine, so he helped Charissa dupe Colin. Kevin McLean was in no way involved in the plot, although he was present at the hunt.

Lord Joshua was sent by the abbot to stop Javan from leaving, Javan quickly took control of the situation by telling Joshua that he was going against the King's specific instructions. All of the others were knights in the royal household.

This espionage eventually proved disastrous for the Deryni cause.

It was not until the reign of King Kelson that the edicts were repealed and Deryni citizens restored to full rights.

They decided, however, that he could be better utilized as a double agent working against Miklos and Marek.
