Katherine Kurtz Trivia Questions

1. When Brion and Kelson are on the deer hunt the hounds flush out rabbits. Who owned the deer hounds?

From Quiz
"Deryni Series" Part 10 "Deryni Rising"

Answer: Ewan, Duke of Claibourne

Ewan, the Duke of Claibourne had been bragging to Brion for weeks about how good the hounds were. It was a huge source of merriment to all, except Ewan, how rash and undisciplined the hounds really were. Of course part of the problem may have been magical mischief caused by Charissa. Sean and Alaric were together in the border marches and not actually present at the hunt, and although Rogier was he did not own the hounds.

2. The first casualty in the invasion led by Miklos and Marek was Earl Hrorik II. What town was he defending when he fell?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 6 "The Bastard Prince"

Answer: Culliecairn

Culliecairn was a fortress town which guarded the Coldoire Pass between Eastmarch and Tolan, without first taking control of it the invaders would be unable to invade Eastmarch. Hrorik was the first major casualty and possibly was targeted by Miklos and Marek as retribution to his taking Sudrey of Rhorau, who was a cousin to Marek, as his wife. Lochalyn was the seat of Hrorik, while Carthane and Desse were located in the south.

3. When Alroy became convinced he was dying he told Rhys to send for Javan. Who did Rhys send in charge of the knights to bring Javan back to the capital from Arx Fidei?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 5 "King Javan's Year"

Answer: Charlan Kai Morgan

Charlan was actually Javan's squire before he entered the abbey at Arx Fidei, and although certainly a spy for the regents he remained more loyal to Javan than to them. Fulk Fitz-Arthur was the son of Tammaron and a junior squire to Alroy. Iver was a younger son of Manfred and Tomais d'Edergoll was Rhys' former squire.

4. When Joram and Evaine visit the crypt they notice that Camber's body shows no sign of decomposing. What does Joram speculate is the cause of this?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 4 "The Harrowing of Gwynedd"

Answer: that his father may indeed be a saint

Joram and Evaine discuss many possibilities while visiting their father's body. They are confused because unlike with Jeb and Alister's body (which while preserved do show some signs of decomposing) they cannot "read" the death "memories". Evaine thinks Camber did indeed perform a spell which put his soul and body into limbo, while Joram is worried that Camber may indeed be a saint.

5. Rhys and Evaine had four children, one of which was brutally murdered at Trurill when only 10 years old. Which of their children was killed by anti-Deryni marauders?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 3 "Camber the Heretic"

Answer: Aidan Camber

Camlin Maclean actually survived the massacre and was rescued from being crucified, however he was in very bad shape. This posed a problem as there were no healers with Evaine's party when they arrived at Trurill. Luckily the healing blood ran true in Tieg, who although only a little over three years old directed the healing energy through Evaine to save Camlin's life.

6. Cinhils's advisor's finally talked him into taking a wife; what was her name?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 2 "Saint Camber"

Answer: Megan de Cameron

She was actually Camber's young ward and while very hesitant and nervous she grew to love Cinhil very much.

7. Rhys and Joram discover that Nicholas Draper, whom they believe to be the legitimate heir to the Haldane throne is hiding at what abbey?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 1 "Camber of Culdi"

Answer: Saint Follian's

Although hiding may not be the proper term...Nicholas (Brother Benedict) was perfectly happy being a priest and wanted nothing whatsoever to do with being King.

8. On what country's culture are the 'Deryni' novels loosely based?

From Quiz The 'Deryni' Novels of Katherine Kurtz

Answer: Wales

Maps of the fictional country of Gwynedd greatly resemble Wales. In real-life Wales, Gwynedd is the name of a county in the northwest.

9. Brion Haldane, King of Gwynedd, Prince of Meara and Lord of the Purple March met his untimely death due in part to poisoned wine. Who gave him the wine to drink?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 10 "Deryni Rising"

Answer: Colin of Fianna

Colin had been given the wine by a young lady he did not know; it was Charissa, Duchess of Tolan in disguise. Charissa had put merahsa in the wine, which dulled Brion's powers and enabled her to make it appear he had a heart attack, when in reality she had killed him with her Deryni powers. Collin had no idea he had been duped into giving Brion the wine. Merasha doesn't affect humans, except to cause slight drowsiness, so Brion's advisors and friends, being all human, were unaffected. Ian and Mustafa were involved in the plot but he wanted to make sure he was not suspected in the tampering of the wine, so he helped Charissa dupe Colin. Kevin McLean was in no way involved in the plot, although he was present at the hunt.

10. When Javan attempted to leave Arx Fidei he and his escort were originally blocked from leaving by Custodes knights. Who was the leader of the knights at Arx Fidei?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 5 "King Javan's Year"

Lord Joshua was sent by the abbot to stop Javan from leaving, Javan quickly took control of the situation by telling Joshua that he was going against the King's specific instructions. All of the others were knights in the royal household.

11. Whom did Davin replace in the royal guard when he was sent in as a spy?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 3 "Camber the Heretic"

Answer: Eidiard of Clure

The Camberian Council decided they needed someone to keep an eye on Tavis. Getting a "spy", especially a Deryni one, into the court would prove to be very difficult. They finally decided to allow Davin MacRorie to attempt the feat by blocking his powers and setting a preconditioned command to join the council at a later date to have the blocks removed. This espionage eventually proved disastrous for the Deryni cause.

14. What ability do the Deryni possess that sometimes causes tension between them and people who do not have the talent?

From Quiz The 'Deryni' Novels of Katherine Kurtz

Answer: The use of magic

Skilled Deryni people have abilities such as teleportation, using special gateways, and scanning the mind. From time to time, this fueled the unfortunate prejudice that the Deryni might use the skills to oppress the so-called normal population. The powers were banned by royal decree, and violent persecution of the Deryni followed. It was not until the reign of King Kelson that the edicts were repealed and Deryni citizens restored to full rights.

15. While Kelson and Morgan were talking in the garden a Stenrect crawler attempted to sting Kelson. Morgan quickly and easily killed the nocturnal insect. They then became aware of a female screaming; who was the female?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 10 "Deryni Rising"

Answer: Lady Elvira

Elvira's screams alerted the Royal Guard who then attempted to arrest Morgan. Kelson and Morgan quickly explained to the Captain of the guard what had occurred. Morgan was however unsettled, as although the Stenrect had little chance of actually reaching Kelson he couldn't understand how Charissa had managed to get the nocturnal desert insect into the garden to begin with.

16. During the six year period after Javan's death and the invasion by Marek, the Camberian Council had managed to only get one "spy" into the royal household. She was hiding as Michaela's maid, what was her name?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 6 "The Bastard Prince"

Answer: Liesel

Unknown to Michaela, Liesel was actually Rhys Thuryn and Evaine's daughter, Rhysel Thuryn. Elspeth, Agatha and Eithne were all maids at Rhemuth, but not Deryni nor associated with the Camberian Council in any way.

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 4 "The Harrowing of Gwynedd"

Answer: Raphael, Micahel, Gabriel, and Uriel

In order typically called upon: Raphael represents the Healer, guardian of air and wind; Michael represents the Defender, fire and Prince of Heaven; Gabriel represents water and is the Heavenly Herald; and Uriel is The Dark Lord of Earth, who escorts all into death. Selaphiel, Jegudiel, and Barachiel are also considered archangels but are not typically a part of Deryni warding.

18. There were five founding members of The Camberian Council, one of which was Alister Cullen. Who were the other four?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 3 "Camber the Heretic"

Answer: Joram, Evaine, Rhys and Jebediah

A year after it was founded, Jaffray, Gregory and Dom Turstane were invited to join. In the beginning the council's main function was to control outlaw Deryni, but as time progressed this task became impossible and within a year and a half of Cinhil's death four of the five founders were dead as well.

19. When Grecotha was revived as a bishoporic, who was elected to the seat of bishop?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 2 "Saint Camber"

20. Which novel was the first to feature King Kelson Haldane in a starring role?

From Quiz The 'Deryni' Novels of Katherine Kurtz

Answer: Deryni Rising

Kelson Haldane assumed the crown when he was just fourteen. In the Gwynedd of the novels, that was considered the age of majority.

21. Who was the Lord Marshall of the first Regency Council which met after Brion's death?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 10 "Deryni Rising"

Answer: Ewan, Duke of Claibourne

22. A Torenthi herald arrived at court and presented an invitation to Rhys Michael, to what did he invite him to?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 6 "The Bastard Prince"

23. Javan found out that one of the members of the council was actually a Deryni who had managed to keep that fact hidden. Who was this powerful surprise ally?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 5 "King Javan's Year"

Etienne had in fact been helped into power by the Camberian Council and he and his son Guiscard were both fiercely loyal to Javan. The others, while members of the council, were all decidedly human.

24. The regents used captive Deryni (they called them pets) to help them not only capture other Deryni but to help them in healing and truth reading. Manfred MacInnis used a failed Deryni healer as his personal pet Deryni. What was his name?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 4 "The Harrowing of Gwynedd"

Answer: Ursin O'Carroll

Tavis was Javan's personal healer, and the regents, for the most part, left him alone. Oriel was a pet Deryni who served Hubert and Tammaron mainly, while Carmody was controlled by Rhun. Both Oriel and Dermot were controlled by the fact that the regents held their wives and children hostage and let it be known that they would be killed immediately for any disobedience whatsoever by the Deryni. Ursin and Tavis actually attended the same school when younger.

25. A critical discovery was the ability to block Deryni powers. Rhys actually discovered this ability while healing Gregory of Ebor. Which other powerful healer also had this rare power?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 3 "Camber the Heretic"

Answer: Tavis O'Neil

This ability was very rare even among talented healers; most simply could not do it. This ability eventually caused many Deryni families to over time forget (and/or hide) their Deryni heritage. This "removal" of Deryni powers also was to play a major role in the disappearance of the Deryni people, it was hoped that by showing the powers could be removed the people could at least survive.

26. What did Cinhil ask his Queen to do for him before he left for war with Ariella?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 10 "Deryni Rising"

Jehana attempted to start the first meeting of the Regency Council without Kelson being present. It was her determination to get rid of Alaric Morgan whom she considered a bad influence on both her deceased husband Brion and their son Prince (soon to be King) Kelson. She was convinced if she got a vote to occur before Kelson and Morgan arrived she could get Morgan not only removed from the council but possibly put to death in connection with Brion's death.

30. When Joram and Tieg captured Dimitri what did they decide to do with him?

From Quiz "Deryni Series" Part 6 "The Bastard Prince"

Answer: use their powers to turn him into a double agent

They needed to do this so that they could help release the Haldane potential in Rhys Michael. On their way back to the council they ran across Dimitri, and at first they were going to kill him. They decided, however, that he could be better utilized as a double agent working against Miklos and Marek.
