Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Alroy became convinced he was dying he told Rhys to send for Javan. Who did Rhys send in charge of the knights to bring Javan back to the capital from Arx Fidei?

Answer: Charlan Kai Morgan

Charlan was actually Javan's squire before he entered the abbey at Arx Fidei, and although certainly a spy for the regents he remained more loyal to Javan than to them. Fulk Fitz-Arthur was the son of Tammaron and a junior squire to Alroy. Iver was a younger son of Manfred and Tomais d'Edergoll was Rhys' former squire.
2. When Javan attempted to leave Arx Fidei he and his escort were originally blocked from leaving by Custodes knights. Who was the leader of the knights at Arx Fidei?

Answer: Lord Joshua

Lord Joshua was sent by the abbot to stop Javan from leaving, Javan quickly took control of the situation by telling Joshua that he was going against the King's specific instructions. All of the others were knights in the royal household.
3. When the Council met for the first time after Alroy's death, the regents had figured out a way to stop Javan from taking the throne. They did this by producing forged papers to make it appear his temporary vows were permanent. Who brought the papers to the council?

Answer: Father Marcus Concannon

Father Concannon did not actually forge the paperwork, although he did know that the Chancery Office and specifically Paulin had. Father Ascelin was a priest at Saint Hillary's, Father Daithi was a priest at Rhemuth and Father Faelan was actually to become Javan's confessor.
4. Javan found out that one of the members of the council was actually a Deryni who had managed to keep that fact hidden. Who was this powerful surprise ally?

Answer: Baron Etienne de Courcy

Etienne had in fact been helped into power by the Camberian Council and he and his son Guiscard were both fiercely loyal to Javan. The others, while members of the council, were all decidedly human.
5. Rhys Michael at a very young age first noticed his future wife, the ward of Manfred MacInnis; what was her name?

Answer: Michaela Drummond

The ex-regents actually wanted Rhys and Michaela to get together and have children, then they could get rid of Alroy and Rhys and extend their regency. Julianna was originally to be Alroy's wife. Giesele and Richeldis were sisters and co-heirs to Kierney.

The regents had Giesele killed so Richeldis would inherit all of the lands and then they married her to Iver MacInnis to further their power and control.
6. The Custodes Fidei, like the regents, had a pet Deryni as well; what was his name?

Answer: Dimitri

Dimitri, who was Paulin's pet Deryni was actually a Torenthi spy. Collos was Dimitri's brother who was healed by the Custodes surgeon. Karis was Oriel's daughter and Carollan was Ursin's son.
7. Javan and his allies probed two of the Custodes to find out about the Custodes' pet Dernyi. While probing one of them they triggered a guard placed to make sure such probes didn't happen. They quickly realized they could not cover up their handiwork and would have to take care of him; what was his name?

Answer: Brother Serafin

Father Lior and Brother Serafin were the two they probed, but Dimitri had only placed a guard in Serafin; his death was made to look like heart failure. Father Halex was the abbot at Arx Fidei while Brother Georgius was a monk there.
8. Tambert Fitz-Arthur Quinnell, through his grandfather's death, inherited a Dukedom. What area of land did he inherit?

Answer: Cassan

Cassan was formerly a small princedom. Through skillful negotiations by Tammaron, upon Prince Ambert's death it became a vassal state under Gwynedd. Torenth was the original home of the Festillic line, while The Connait was famed for it mercenaries and Meara, a kingdom to the northwest nominally under Gwynedd's rule was to provide major issues in the future.
9. Miklos, brother of King Arion of Torenth gave Javan something for his coronation; exactly what was it?

Answer: an ancient scroll concerning the life of Bearand Haldane

The scroll was, according to Miklos, started during Saint Bearand's lifetime and finished shortly after his death, a princely gift indeed.
10. At the coronation celebration Earl Hrorik II of Eastmarch accuses one of the ex-regents of murdering his brother three years earlier and challenges him to duel, which he wins; whom did he kill in the ensuing duel?

Answer: Murdoch of Carthane

Murdoch had Ewan murdered at the twins' thirteenth birthday party and Hrorik never forgave him for this. As Murdoch lay dying he warned the other ex-regents that they had better watch out for Javan; he was convinced Javan was more strong willed and deadly to them than they originally thought.

The wounds did not immediately kill him so Murdoch actually asked Rhun for the coup de grace to relieve him of his pain.
11. The kings of Gwynedd also ruled over other lands which were reflected in their full titles. What was Javan's full title?

Answer: King of Gwynedd and Kheldour, Lord of Meara and Mooryn and the Purple March, Overlord of Carthane

Howicce and LLanned were allied together and not under the Haldane's reign and Tolan was a nominal ally of Deryni controlled Torenth.
12. Rhys Michael was abducted by the ex-regents (masquerading as rebel Deryni) and taken to Culdi. Hostage letters were written to Javan with various demands; whose signature was signed on the fake letters?

Answer: Ansel MacRorie, Earl of Culdi

The ex-regents believed, rightly so, that if Rhys and Michaela were left alone they would soon decide to marry. All the time Rhys was led to believe Javan knew and approved of his upcoming wedding.
13. An attempt was made on Oriel's life because the ex-regents felt he was too close to Javan; whom did the regents get to lead this attack?

Answer: Sitric

Rhun "convinced" Sitric it would be in his best interests to kill Oriel. In order to do this he recruited a few men and used his Deryni powers to convince them what they were doing was not only for the best, but that they were actually trying to save Oriel from Gavin (one of Alroy's former squires who became one of Javan's personal knights). Ursin was still in prison and Tavis was still in Revan's camp.
14. Javan was betrayed by his ex-regents and ambushed at Revan's camp. Many, many people, both Deryni and human lost their lives there; who died defending Javan until the last?

Answer: Charlan

This part of the book always gets to me; Javan underestimated how far the ex-regents would go to make sure they retained power. The Custodes decimated both Javan's knights as well as unarmed helpless people who were there to listen to Revan preach.
15. Rhys Michael realizes at the end that Javan was right, the ex-regents will never allow their power to be limited. He tells Michaela they have three choices. Which of these is NOT one of their choices in life?

Answer: bid their time and wait for Deryni help

Poor Rhys realizes too late that he has played right into the ex-regents' hand by marrying Michaela. In the end he decides they will have the heirs and hope for the Haldane line to one day be more than puppet rulers.
