President's Families Trivia Questions

1. The first death in our timeline of tragedies involving members of the Kennedy family occurred in 1944. How did Joseph P. Kennedy Jr die?

From Quiz
The Kennedys: A Timeline Of Tragedy

Answer: Died in aircraft explosion on top secret mission

Joseph P. Kennedy was the eldest of the family of nine, and some say he was his father's favourite. During WW2, Kennedy volunteered to fly with the US Navy and served initially in the Caribbean. In 1943, his squadron of B24 bombers was sent to England. He flew enough missions to qualify for leave, but twice declined. On August 12, 1944, he took part in a top secret mission to fly a Liberator bomber packed with bombs on a drone mission. The idea was that Kennedy and a colleague would bail out, leaving their aircraft to be radio-controlled by others accompanying them. At 6.20 that morning, two explosions ripped the Liberator apart and the two pilots died.

2. For which US president did Harriet Lane act as 'First Lady'?

From Quiz White House Weirdness

Answer: James Buchanan

Harriet Rebecca Lane Johnston (1830-1903) was the niece of bachelor James Buchanan and served as his First Lady from 1857 to 1861. Harriet was the daughter of Elliot Lane and Jane Ann Buchanan Lane (James' sister). By the time Harriet was 11 years old she was an orphan and James, her favorite uncle, was appointed her legal guardian while he was still a Democratic senator from Pennsylvania. Buchanan went on to be appointed Secretary of State and later elected President; he chose the popular Miss Lane to act as First Lady. She played the part very well, despite the tensions that enveloped the country at the time. Seven states had seceded by the time Buchanan left office.

3. Abraham Lincoln's dog was the first 'First Dog' to be photographed, but what was his name?

From Quiz POTUS' Pets

Answer: Fido

Although somehow I expected more creativity from our 16th President, the family dog was named Fido. Fido was a yellow, mixed breed dog who would go into town with Lincoln prior to his becoming president. When Lincoln was elected, all the noise and ceremony from the fireworks and cannons scared Fido, so the family chose to leave their beloved dog in Springfield, Illinois with a friend, rather than take him to the White House. The photo of Fido must have been taken before the Lincolns left for Washington, probably as a memento to remember him by until they could all be reunited.

4. What book did Jackie help Jack write during his convalescence from back surgeries in 1955?

From Quiz Jack and Jackie: The President and First Lady 2

During his convalescence in 1956, he published "Profiles in Courage", a book describing eight instances in which U.S. Senators risked their careers by standing by their personal beliefs. He dedicated it to Jackie, whom helped him, not only with the writing, but also the publishing of the book.

Bobby lost the Oregon primary to Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy. JFK lost the vice-presidential nomination to Estes Kefauver on the floor of the 1956 Democratic convention, but it was a vote by the convention delegates, not a popular election.
