Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After Barack Obama was elected to the office of president of the U.S. his family was presented with a dog they named Bo. What type of dog is Bo?

Answer: Portuguese Water Dog

Bo was a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy. Porties originated in the Algarve region of Portugal but found their way to the coastal regions where they were taught by fishermen to herd fish. Be forewarned: these beautiful dogs are high maintenance. Although Porties don't shed hair, their curly coats should be brushed daily and trimmed every few months. Daily exercise is very important.

In 2010 the Obama family introduced another Portie to their family. They named that dog Sunny.
2. The 19th President of the United States, Rutherford Hayes, owned several varieties of pets. Besides dogs, the family owned goats, cats, birds, and horses. One sleek-looking pet was a dog named Grim. Which breed of dog was it?

Answer: Greyhound

The Greyhound looks built for racing and is still used for that purpose. This sleek dog originated in Egypt and was bred for hunting foxes and deer. Greyhounds are known for their sweet nature, loyalty, and affection. The Hayes family also owned an Elkhound named Weejie.
3. One of the most beloved American Presidents, Abraham Lincoln, owned a menagerie of pets. He rescued kittens and once saved a turtle from the cruelty of some boys. However, there was one pet, a stray dog, he loved above all others. What was the name of Lincoln's beloved dog?

Answer: Fido

Biographer Michael Burlingame once wrote "Lincoln's outrage at the mistreatment of animals foreshadowed his indignation of the cruelty of slaves". President Lincoln's pet collection also included cats, goats, ponies, and rabbits.
4. President John F. Kennedy's daughter, Caroline, famously owned a pony when she was a child. Stick a feather in your cap if you can remember the name of her pony.

Answer: Macaroni

Macaroni was a gift to Caroline and John F. Kennedy Jr. by Vice-President Lyndon B. Johnson. The pet was a 10-year-old, part Shetland roan that was so special it was allowed to wander the grounds of the White House. Neil Diamond later revealed that he was inspired to write the hit song "Sweet Caroline" after seeing a photo of Caroline and Macaroni together.
5. Dogs seem to be among the favored pets of Presidential families. Although John Tyler owned a horse, he was also owner of a different type of pet which was definitely not a dog. What type of pet was it?

Answer: Canary

The canary was appropriately named Johnny Ty. Tyler's horse was known as The General.
6. While Caroline Kennedy's pet horse was free to roam around the White House grounds, President Bill Clinton and his family owned a pet cat that was allowed free reign of the gardens and the West Wing. The feline was known by what name?

Answer: Socks

Socks was an American shorthair adopted by the Clinton family in 1991, much to the delight of First Daughter Chelsea whose arms it jumped into after a piano lesson. The Clintons later adopted a chocolate Labrador and named him Buddy. Unfortunately Socks took an instant disliking to Buddy.

When the Clintons left office they took Buddy with them but gave Socks to Clinton's secretary, Betty Currie, who kept him until he died in 2009.
7. One of the most unusual pets briefly belonged to the 6th American President, John Quincy Adams. It was kept in a bathtub off the East Room for two months before being sent back to its original owner in France. What kind of pet was it?

Answer: Alligator

The alligator originally belonged to the Marquis de Lafayette, a French general who led troops alongside George Washington. After relaxing in the East Room bathtub for several months, the reptile was returned to the Marquis. Herbert Hoover's son later owned a pair of alligators that were allowed to crawl around the grounds of the White House.

It must be fun to allow your pets to roam around your property: as long as you're not the one cleaning up after it.
8. Presidents certainly haven't been shy about allowing their pets to freely wander about on the grounds of the White House. "Old Tippecanoe" himself, William Henry Harrison, owned a pet he named Old Whiskers. What type of pet was it?

Answer: Goat

The Harrisons also owned a pet cow named Sukey. Both pets enjoyed grazing on the White House lawn. Like most goats, Old Whiskers could be ornery. Once, while pulling a cart filled with the President's grandchildren across the White House lawn, the goat took off running, the cart and grandchildren in tow. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
9. Woodrow Wilson served two terms as President, 1913-1921. He owned what type of animals that often grazed on the back lawn of the White House?

Answer: Sheep

The Wilsons owned a flock of sheep. Since Woodrow Wilson was in office during World War I, he auctioned off the wool to help the Red Cross in their efforts to aid wounded soldiers.
10. Elizabeth Taylor, Angelina Jolie, and King Henry VIII owned one. U.S. President Andrew Jackson also owned one which he named Poll. What pet do these famous people share in common?

Answer: Parrot

Poll was fluent in English and Spanish. She had quite the vocabulary, not all of it polite. In fact, the parrot had to be removed from President Jackson's funeral because she kept swearing. The Jackson family also raised roosters.
