Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is unusual about the pouch of the bandicoot?

Answer: It opens from the rear instead of the front.

The bandicoot is a small marsupial that is found in Australia. Although it can stand on two feet it often digs while crouched down on four feet. Because of this, it has a backwards facing pouch, so that dirt does not enter the pouch while digging and possibly harm their babies. Bandicoots are omnivores that can adapt to many different types of terrain and adapt to many changes in their environment.
2. Bobcats are indigenous to which of the following continents?

Answer: North America

Bobcats are one of the most common wildcats found in North America. The name is derived from their short bobbed tail. Bobcats, like all felines, are carnivores and hunt prey such as rabbits, birds, deer, and sometimes, livestock. Bobcats were hunted at one time for their fur, but new international laws have put an end to this practice and their populations have begun to spring back.

These beautiful spotted cats can survive in the forest, lower mountains and even semi-desert terrain.
3. At one time, there were less than twenty bontebok still alive.

Answer: True

The bontebok was hunted as food by European colonists almost to the point of extinction in the early 19th century. Today they live in the wild in the countries of South Africa and Lesotho where they reside in a protected park and are now popularly farmed.

They are not very active during the heat of the day and unlike most antelope, they are not good jumpers. Both males and females display the lyre-shaped horns and have white socks. A white facial blaze is usually seen, as is a white belly.
4. Is it true that bats have very poor eyesight and some are even blind?

Answer: Completely untrue...simply a myth.

It is a myth that most bats are blind or have very poor eyesight. In fact, most bats can see as well as human being do. They see in color and can see in low-light better than humans. Most bats eat insects or fruit and are usually nocturnal in nature. Most bats are shy and gentle and avoid contact with humans.

These flying mammals help to keep mosquito populations in check, and have also aided in the creation of new anticoagulant medications for people.
5. Which of the following things is a bison most likely to eat?

Answer: Grass

The adaptable bison prefers to live on the prairie where grass is readily available. These giant, heavily furred animals continuously move while they graze in herds that can number well into the hundreds. The American bison population continues to grow as they return from the edge of extinction, caused by overhunting. Large herds consist of mothers and their offspring, while males congregate in smaller bachelor herds.

The only time they intermingle is during mating season. Bison use their excellent sense of smell and acute hearing to help them avoid predators such as wolves.
6. The barasingha deer, found in the Indian subcontinent, is also known by which of the following nicknames?

Answer: Swamp deer

The barasingha deer, also known as the swamp deer, is found in Nepal and northern India. Known for its flamboyant antlers, and loud roars, this deer has had a large drop in population as its populations have become fragmented due to habitat loss. They have a life span of about 20 years, and give birth once a year.

The barasingha deer is fond of the water and is often seen partially submerged while it feeds on the grassy regions found at the edges of swamps and rivers in the area.
7. As far as its eating habits, which classification would the bat-eared fox fall into?

Answer: Insectivorous

Although most foxes are carnivores, the bat-eared fox is an insectivore that simply loves termites. These small African foxes make underground burrows, where the litter is guarded by the male, while the female goes feeding in order to keep up her milk production.

This animal is preyed upon by hyenas, lions, leopards and some of the larger avian predators. Bat-eared foxes live in eastern areas of Africa and a main cause of death for this species is rabies.
8. The badger can be found in many area of Europe, Asia, and North America. Which breed of dog was bred specifically to hunt the badger?

Answer: Dachshund

The badger is a fearless animal known to hunt a huge variety of animals, many larger than itself. The Dachshund was bred to go into badger holes and flush them out. Badgers have been hunted for centuries for their pelts which are used to make jackets and brushes.

In some parts of the world badger is hunted for food where it used usually smoked or dried. There are many types of badgers but all make underground burrows, have coarse fur, and are known for their ferocity when protecting their young.
9. On which part of a baboon's body would you find its ischial callosities?

Answer: On its butt

Baboons are a type of primate found in Africa and Asia. They have a long snout and sharp canine teeth. On the rear end of a baboon is his ischial callosity, which is a padded area of skin that has no hair. This callous provides a nerveless area that is like a built-in pillow for the primate to sit on. Baboons are omnivorous and will eat whatever is available including fruit, shellfish, birds, fish, and even livestock.
10. In the wild, the only natural enemy of the blue whale is the giant squid.

Answer: False

Actually, in the wild, the only natural enemy of the blue whale is the orca, also known as the killer whale. Close to one third of all adult blue whales have scars that were caused by orca attacks. Blue whales have some of the most complex vocalizations of any marine mammal. Blue whales are found in most of the oceans and their populations appear to be stable and possibly increasing.

The blue whale is the largest animal ever to have lived.
