Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which best describes the natural disposition of the amazing gorilla?

Answer: Shy, private and non-aggressive

The intelligent gorilla is a shy, non-aggressive primate that is not known to attack humans unless deliberately provoked. They fight to defend their family troop and for possession of a female. The media has portrayed this animal as a frightening carnivorous beast that is aggressive to humans.

This is completely wrong as they are herbivores and will go to great lengths to avoid any human contact. Now, a tidbit of information that is just for fun, gorillas can be identified through their unique nose prints.
2. Starting around 1969, 93 desert-loving gemsbok were released at which of the following locations in order to increase their population?

Answer: White Sands, New Mexico

The gemsbok likes a arid, desert type terrain and obtain most of their water through the vegetation that they eat. The 93 individuals that were released in White Sands, New Mexico blossomed into a population of over 3,000 in a little over 40 years. The long, beautiful horns of this gazelle made it a popular trophy animal for many years, depleting the populations in North Africa.
3. What is the scientific name for the grizzly bear?

Answer: Ursus arctos horribilis

Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis), are a subspecies of brown bear that are known for their preference to interior habitats, great size, and extreme musculature. The term grizzly or grizzled comes from the hairs on their backs which have white tips.

These solitary animals can have claws as long as a human finger, which helps them with their omnivorous diet of various mammals, fish, fruit, nuts and roots.
4. After a female guinea pig gives birth, why do all male pups need to be taken away when they are a month old?

Answer: They will try to mate with their mother.

The affectionate guinea pig grows quickly. Male pups are able to breed at the age of one month and have been known to try and breed their mothers. Other unusual facts about this omnivore is that they have four toes on their back feet and five on their front. Guinea pigs are born with their eyes open, fully furred, and are able to eat solid food.
5. The beautiful gibbon is known for their skill at brachiating, which means you will most likely find them in which of the following locations?

Answer: Up a tree

Brachiation is the term for swinging from tree to tree. The gibbon is a small arboreal ape found in many areas of southeast Asia. There are half a dozen subspecies, but all love the tree tops and all have a ball and socket joint in their wrists to assist with brachiating.

In fact, some types of gibbons can leap as far as 26 ft. (8m). It is unlikely that you will ever see gibbons in water as they cannot swim. These omnivorous apes are very social and live in family groups which assist each other in protecting their territory.
6. What is the other, more proper, name that is used for the nocturnal primate known as a bush baby?

Answer: Galagos

Galagos are tiny primates found in a variety of locations across Africa and are often called bush babies. Rarely seen, except at night, galagos have many adaptations for their nocturnal lifestyle. Acute hearing, excellent night vision, strong legs for jumping between trees, and a long tail for balance, help make the galagos a very successful species.
7. The gaur is the largest member of the cattle family.

Answer: True

The gaur is usually eight to ten feet in length and six feet tall at the shoulders. The males regularly grow over 4,000 lbs. and the only land animals that are larger are the elephant, hippo, and rhino. Other than man, the only natural enemy that the guar has is the tiger which may strike if the tiger is starving or the guar appears infirm. Gaur have even been known to kill attacking tigers.

A piece of trivia you may not need to know is that the "Red Bull" energy drinks were based on an energy drink from Thailand.

The name of that drink was "Gratin Daang" which translates into "red gaur"!
8. How does a female giraffe let a male giraffe know that she is ready to mate?

Answer: She urinates in his mouth.

It is a tricky procedure for a male giraffe to get to mate. Females are fertile for very short periods of time and a male may follow a female around for weeks hoping to be there at the right time. Giraffes practice a behavior known as flehmen which involves the female giraffe urinating into the male's mouth.

The urine of a female who is receptive tastes different than it does at any other time of the year.
9. The annual migrating herds of the gnu form columns that can reach for over a thousand miles.

Answer: True

The gnu, or wildebeest, as they are often called, form one of the largest migrating herds of any animal on the planet. Columns of these animals can stretch over a thousand miles and are rumored to cause the ground to vibrate. Although the animal is basically gentle, as are most bovines, they have a somewhat menacing appearance. The word "wildebeest" is derived from the Afrikaans phrase for "wild beast".
10. Which of these options is the name of this animal, which is often considered to be the parent species of the domesticated llama?

Answer: Guanaco

Guanacos are wild camelids which make their home in elevations high in the Andes Mountains of South America. They are often hunted for their meat and their fur, which is highly sought after. Numerous attempts at domesticating them have taken place, but have been largely unsuccessful. Juvenile guanacos are called chulengos.
