Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What hairstyle does the Hungarian komondor look like it asked for at the barber shop, making it high on the list of strange looking dogs?

Answer: Dreadlocks

The Hungarian komondor is an off-white colour with fur that looks like long cords resembling dreadlocks. The komondor is also known as the Hungarian sheepdog. Its long corded fur has also led to some calling it a mop dog. The large breed weighs between 40 and 60 kg (88 and 132 lbs).

In Hungary, where it originated, it is registered as a national treasure. As a result, it is protected from any genetic modification even though it is a rather strange looking dog.
2. Which of these dogs strangely looks most like a sheep?

Answer: Bedlington terrier

Bedlington terriers are a breed of small dog native to a mining town in northeast England. They were originally bred to hunt, but have also been used in dog races and as companion dogs. They are strong swimmers, and love to run in the snow. Their fur is relatively short and tight to the body, except for a distinctive fluffy knot that is on the top of its head.

The top knot, floppy ears, and white-grey colouring make it look somewhat like a small lamb. It is really strange to see a dog look so much like another species.
3. The puli is another strange looking dog, with dreadlock-like corded fur. It is from Hungary like the komondor.

Answer: True

The puli is smaller than the Hungarian komondor, the other dog from Hungary with a corded dreadlock-like coat. The puli is a herding dog that was trained to guard flocks of sheep. In fact, it worked in collaboration with the komondor to guard the flock in many cases.

The puli is very effective at guarding sheep against wolves because its thick coat protects it from wolf bites. Effective though they may be, they are still somewhat strange looking with all of that fur!
4. What animal was most prized as the catch when hunted by the strange looking Russian borzoi dogs during sport hunting in Russia?

Answer: Wolves

The Russian borzoi is a tall dog that looks similar to a cross between a greyhound and an Afghan hound. They usually stand between 26 inches (66 cm) and 30 inches (76 cm). When the tsars were in control of Russia, and hunting competitions were popular amongst the elite, these dogs were used during said competitions.

Although they did hunt for small game, the most prized catch was a wolf. Even today, in some parts of Russia, the Russian borzoi is used as a hunting dog. It makes the list as a strange looking dog because of its tall, gangly appearance and very lean frame.
5. Another strange looking dog, in which country did the Brussels griffon originate?

Answer: Belgium

The Brussels griffon is a small dog, standing 9 to 11 inches (23-28 cm) tall, and weighing 8 to 10 pounds (4-5 kg). They are a bit odd looking because of their long fur, short faces and sometimes long tongues. The dog became popular in Belgium in the late 1800s when Queen Marie Henriette took an interest in them and became a breeder.

She also promoted them on the international stage. Verdell, Jack Nicholson's dog in the movie "As Good As It Gets" was a Brussels griffon.
6. For which job was the strange looking affenpinscher bred?

Answer: Hunt and kill rats

The affenpinscher originated in Germany and genetic testing suggests that it is an ancestor to both the Brussels griffon and the miniature schnauzer. Its wire-like hair makes the dog an odd-looking one. In fact, its face has a bit of a primate appearance in some cases which may have led to its alternative name - the monkey terrier.

It typically grows to 6.5 to 13.2 pounds (2.9 to 6.0 kg), so is considered a relatively small dog. It was originally bred as a working dog whose job was to remove rodents from grain storage areas, homes, and other places where rats gather.
7. Which strange looking dog can weigh 110-150 pounds (50-70 kg)? I wonder if it likes ice cream.

Answer: Neapolitan mastiff

The Neapolitan mastiff is definitely a strange looking dog. Besides its huge size, this Italian dog from the Naples area has a lot of extra skin, especially on its head. This results in heavy wrinkles on its face. It is a relatively new breed, first recognized with its standard in 1949. If you are a Harry Potter fan, Hagrid's dog Fang was portrayed by a Neapolitan mastiff in the movies.
8. In which country was the strange looking Bergamasco shepherd first registered?

Answer: Italy

This is another sheep dog that has long ringlets that sometimes resemble dreadlocks. It didn't originate in Hungary like the puli and the komondor, though. This dog is typically grey or black with very thick fur. It originated in Italy as a herding dog for both sheep and cattle, but is also kept as a pet today.

Its long hair sometimes has the owners trimming the hair, or putting the hair on the top of its head in a ponytail to keep the hair up off its face and allow the dog to see better. With all of the long hair, it is a strange looking dog for sure!
9. What type of strange looking dog with an egg-shaped head made many appearances on "Hockey Night in Canada"?

Answer: Bull terrier

Don Cherry was a flamboyant host of the "Coach's Corner" segment on "Hockey Night in Canada" on Saturday evenings from 1986 to 2019. His bull terrier sometimes shared the spotlight with him. This odd-looking dog comes in a variety of colours but always has an egg-shaped head with the wider part at the top near the ears and a narrower and somewhat pointed snout.

The bull terrier is also the only dog with triangular shaped eyes. Don Cherry's first bull terrier was reportedly given to him by the hockey team that he coached in the 1970s.

Its name was Blue. He has had a number of bull terriers over the years, always naming them Blue.
10. Did the really strange looking Chinese crested dog originate in Asia?

Answer: No

This dog is really strange looking. It is mostly hairless with tufts of fur on top of its head, at the end of its tail, and on the lower part of its legs near their feet. Despite its name, the breed as we know it today did not originate in China. In the 1950s, this dog was bred in the US.

There are also some genetic similarities between it and both African dogs, and the Mexican Hairless dog that originated in North America. One story also says that Spanish conquistadors of Peru brought them back to China as gifts.
