Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The tallest of all dog breeds

Answer: Irish wolfhound

The gentle Irish wolfhound is usually listed as the world's tallest breed. As adults, many of them are 7 ft. tall when standing on their hind legs, and the size of a small pony when on all fours. This is a very old breed that was used to hunt wolves. Despite its beginnings, this breed has developed into a patient, gentle, kind breed, and is wonderful with children.
2. The lion dog

Answer: Rhodesian ridgeback

The Rhodesian ridgeback derives its name from a strip of hair that runs down the center of its back in the opposite direction of the rest of the animal's fur. Originating in Zimbabwe, this breed was originally bred to track and keep lions, and other big animals, at bay until the hunters arrived.

This is a dog for a home with larger children and should be socialized and trained while very young. They are very loyal and make good watch dogs.
3. Badger hunter

Answer: Dachshund

Despite its small size the dachshund is a very brave and clever breed. Bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing prey, the dachshund would follow its prey into their burrows and pull them out or fight them to the death. This breed is affectionate and lively and can be a great family pet.
4. Used in the Iditarod

Answer: Husky

The husky is a strong, muscular, cold weather work dog full of stamina. They are one of the more pack oriented dogs and do well when they have at least one other canine companion. They come in a variety of sizes and are known for their long, thick fur which protects them from cold weather.

They are a working dog famous for their use in dog-mushing competitions such as the Iditarod. The husky has beautiful almond shaped eyes that come in a variety of colors.
5. Hungarian sheepdog

Answer: Komondor

The Komondor is a breed of Hungarian sheepdog. Like most herding breeds they are brave and strong. These are a big dog known for their long white corded coats that look a lot like dreadlocks. This unusual coat helps him blend in with the herd as well as provide protection from predators.

They are loyal, protective family dogs and are known for patrolling their domain (your house, apartment, or yard) at night.
6. Butterfly dog

Answer: Papillon

The large-eyed papillon is a lovely little ball of fur. It derives its name from its rather large, upright ears, that reminded the French of butterfly. This is a delicate boned dog that is probably best with older children and adults. This is only because a small child might accidently hurt them. They make gentle, sweet affectionate pets.
7. Smallest dog breed

Answer: Chihuahua

Originating in Mexico, the Chihuahua is listed with AKC as the world's smallest breed. These tiny dogs are quick, alert dogs which are very loyal to their owners. They may look tiny to us, but to themselves they look like wolves. Most would be unafraid to put a St. Bernard in his place.
8. Water rescue breed

Answer: Newfoundland

Known for its skills as a water rescue dog, the Newfoundland has webbed paws that help them with their excellent swimming skills. This is a huge dog can weigh in at 150 lbs. or 68 kg. Thick black fur covers a huge head that belies its gentle, sweet temperament. It is an intelligent breed that makes a great family pet that wants nothing more than to please its owner.
9. Japanese national treasure

Answer: Akita

The Akita is a large, heavily boned dog with a curled tail. Declared a National Treasure of Japan, this densely furred dog is very loyal and protective to its owner. They are very affectionate with their owner but somewhat standoffish with newcomers. It needs a strong owner who will provide consistent training.
10. Scottish ratting breed

Answer: Cairn terrier

The cairn terrier is a hearty little hunting dog. It was taught to hunt around the piles of rocks known as cairns, and they have great balance and maneuverability. Like most terriers they are lively, energetic dogs with coats that require little maintenance.

This breed has the unusual trait of usually being left-pawed, which often correlates into excellent performance in tasks requiring superior scent skills.
