Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first word of 8 letters describes what you are when you are alone or without companions.

Answer: Solitary

To be solitary is to be alone. It is a term that can describe people (a solitary man) and objects (a solitary structure). The root of the word is 'solus', from the Latin for 'alone'.
2. Drop a letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that describes people who alter and fit clothing to individuals.

Answer: Tailors

Unlike clothing that is mass produced to pre-set sizings, tailors will make clothing from scratch to fit an individual, or make alterations to a given pre-made outfit so that it will fit better. Some famous tailors in literature include the tailors who made 'The Emperor's New Clothes' and the 'Valiant Little Tailor' (who killed seven with one blow).
3. Drop another letter and rearrange the rest to make a member of a ship's crew.

Answer: Sailor

Nowadays, the vast majority of larger watercraft are powered by engines, with only sporting or pleasure craft still using sails. Even so, the term that was born in the time of sailing ships still applies today, whether a vessel has sails, or not.
4. Lose another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that describes mendacious people.

Answer: Liars

Liars are not just people who avoid the truth, they tell lies. And not by accident.

There are a number of other words that relate to lying, like 'dishonesty', 'deceive', 'bear false witness', 'prevaricate', 'fabricate', 'falsify', etc. The term 'mendacious' also refers to telling lies, and has its roots in the Latin term 'mendax' (lying) and 'mendacium' (lie, untruth).
5. Again, drop a letter and rearrange the rest to make the basic unit of currency in Turkey.

Answer: Lira

In addition to Turkey, other countries that have used 'lira' as a unit of currency in the past were Malta, Italy, and Israel. The term has its origins from the Latin 'libra', which was a unit of weight (pound).
6. Drop yet another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that describes a song-like vocal or instrumental composition.

Answer: Air

In Western musical tradition, the 'air' was largely associated with the folk songs and ballads, but was adopted into more formal music (such as operas, cantatas or oratorios) as an 'aria'.
7. Lose a letter once again to make a word that describes a South American species of three-toed sloth.

Answer: Ai

The ai is also known as the pale-throated sloth. They can be found in the northern part of South America (Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Venezuela).

Oddly enough (as this quiz goes), they are solitary animals, mating when in season but otherwise fending for themselves.
8. Drop one last letter to leave yourself with the note typically played by the oboe when tuning the orchestra.

Answer: A

'A' is the sixth note of the (all natural) C Major scale, making it equivalent to 'La' in the fixed-do solfège scale. As the tuning standard, not only does the (usually principal) oboist in an orchestra play it for the rest of the orchestra, but electronic tuners also use A=440 (frequency in hertz) as the reference for standard tuning.
9. Now add a letter to make a word that is the name of a river in Laos and Vietnam that empties into the Gulf of Tonkin.

Answer: Ma

The Ma River is 400 km long and originates in northwestern Vietnam before crossing into Laos near Ban Muang-Èt, then moving back into Vietnam and continuing to the Gulf of Tonkin near Thanh Hoa.

In Vietnamese, it is called 'Sông Mã', while in Laos its name is 'Nam Ma'.
10. Add another letter and rearrange for a word describing what you are on when fleeing from the authorities.

Answer: Lam

As a noun, being 'on the lam' means to be trying to flee from the law, usually due to having committed a crime (or at least having been accused of it).

As a verb, 'to lam' means to thrash or to beat soundly (related to 'lambaste', which means to criticize harshly).
11. Add another letter and rearrange to make germinated cereal grain that has been dried for making beer.

Answer: Malt

The malting process involves allowing a grain (typically barley) to germinate by soaking it in water, then halting the process by applying heated air to dry it. This causes the grains to develop various enzymes that are needed for modifying starches into sugars, and breaking down proteins so that they can be used by yeast.

Apart from beer, other popular uses of malts are for whiskey, malted milk, and malt vinegar.
12. Add yet another letter and rearrange them to make a word that describes a 'heavy' kind of music.

Answer: Metal

'Heavy metal' is a type of rock music that first appeared in the late 1960s. It is characterized by a thick sound, heavy with distorted guitars, long instrumental solos, heavy percussion, and general loudness.

Pioneers in the genre include Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
13. Now add a letter and rearrange them to get a stick with a red cloth hanging from it, used to conceal a matador's sword.

Answer: Muleta

Since bulls are colour blind, a muleta didn't actually need to be red, but that was the tradition (extended from the matador's cape, which was also used to attract the bull).

The muleta was typically employed in the final third of a bullfight, used in a number of flourishing passes before the matador killed the bull.
14. Add the quiz's penultimate letter and rearrange to make a another word for good luck charms.

Answer: Amulets

More specifically than just a generic 'good luck charm', amulets are intended to provide protection for the holder/user. The term 'amulet' comes from the Latin 'amuletum', which means 'an object that protects a person from trouble', according to Pliny's "Natural History".
15. Add yet another letter and rearrange them to make a word that is your perfect companion - someone who completes you.

Answer: Soulmate

While the 'soul' portion of 'soulmate' may have connotations to specific religions, that really doesn't come into play in this context.

One's soulmate is that person with whom you have the closest affinity, and while it doesn't necessarily have to be, it often refers to a lover.

Here's hoping that you have found your soulmate, or are on the journey.
