The Ups and Downs of Winter Trivia Quiz

Start with an eight-letter word (a type of winter weather). The next word will be one letter less and may need to be unscrambled. After you get down to one letter, I'll begin to add letters to make a new word. Have fun!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first word of 8 letters is a type of winter precipitation.

Answer: Snowfall

I love winter, even when there are storms. Snowfalls are best when they are big, fat snowflakes that drift down, and make for perfect snowball fights. Blizzards, snowstorms and snowsqualls are differentiated by wind speed, intensity, and duration.
2. Drop a letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that describes fields that are left unplanted.

Answer: Fallows

Leaving a field to lie fallow is part of the idea of crop rotation. Having the same type of crop on the same plot of land can skew the nutrient levels in the soil, and by growing different crops, or by leaving the field to rest fallow, gives the soil a chance to recover.
3. Drop another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that describes a sickly, yellowish complexion.

Answer: Sallow

A sallow complexion is an unhealthy one, typically associated with fevers or that paleness that comes with blood loss.
4. Lose another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that is what you use to hold up the ceiling.

Answer: Walls

What is there to say about walls? They can be supporting walls, like in the 'question' or simply dividing walls to partition your space. They can be painted or papered, decorated with pictures or artwork, and stared at when you get bored. Pretty versatile, eh?
5. Again, drop a letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that describes tools for making holes in leather or wood.

Answer: Awls

A rather pointed subject, awls. Essentially, they are nothing more than pointed spikes, although there are different types. A bradawl, for instance, is used to make holes in wood, while a scratch awl is only intended to (you guessed it) scratch wood. A stitching awl is used to make holes in leather. And that's pretty much 'awl' you need to know about awls.
6. Drop yet another letter and rearrange the rest to make a word that encompasses rules of conduct.

Answer: Law

How does one actually describe a concept like law? There isn't actually a consensus, but one definition, according to Wikipedia, is that "law is a system of rules and guidelines which are enforced through social institutions to govern behavior."

Yeah. Boring.
7. Lose a letter once again to make a word that is the sixth syllable in the solfege scale.

Answer: La

And if you've never heard of solfege before, go watch "The Sound of Music". Basically, the notes of a major scale (really, every note has its solfege equivalent, but I digress) are replaced by syllables, allowing for any scale to be expressed, regardless of what key you are in.

DO RE MI FA SO LA TI DO (imagine me singing)
8. Drop one last letter to leave yourself with a very good grade.

Answer: A

Typically, 'A' has come to be equated with being of good quality, whether it's school grades or assessing the quality of eggs or meat. Makes you wonder if that also means vitamin A is better than all the other vitamins, right?
9. Now add a letter to make a word that is a river in Nigeria or a Ford model.

Answer: Ka

The Ka River can be found in northern Nigeria. It is a tributary of the Sokoto River, which itself joins the Niger later on.

The Ford Ka is a car.
10. Add a letter and rearrange them to make a word that inquires.

Answer: Ask

Do I really need to give more info here? Can I not? Who can I ask? What do you think? Should we just move on?
11. Add another letter to make a word that is something that needs doing.

Answer: Task

One of my least favourite words, right up there with 'work', 'job', and 'chore.' Wikipedia says that a task is "an activity that needs to be accomplished within a defined period of time or by a deadline." Of course, I prefer the D&D version of Task: the dragon god of greed and selfishness.
12. Add yet another letter and rearrange them to make a word that means to pursue quarry.

Answer: Stalk

You can stalk something (track it while hunting), or you can stalk around in a huff (a stiff, angry gait), and you can do either holding a stalk (the stem or main axis of a plant (like a flower)).
13. Now add a letter and rearrange them to describe pancakes made of grated potatoes.

Answer: Latkes

Latkes (or variations thereupon) can be found in the cuisines of many European and Middle Eastern countries. They ar simple to make (shredded potatoes, flour and eggs, fried in olive oil), and can be combined with various things (eg. onions/garlic) or given yummy toppings (sour cream, cottage cheese, applesauce, sugar, you-name-it).

Excuse me for a few minutes - I seem to have a craving for some potato pancakes. Wait here.
14. Add the quiz's penultimate letter and rearrange to make a word that describes jewellery for your lower legs.

Answer: Anklets

Basically, anklets are bracelets for your ankles. Mind you, they are mostly chains, string, or leather bands, rather than stiff rings.
15. Finally, add one last letter and rearrange them to describe what you snuggle in when it's cold outside.

Answer: Blankets

One of my favourite winter activities is to wrap myself in a blanket and arm myself with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book, snuggled up on the couch. Or if I don't have a book to read, there's always FunTrivia!
