Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the original name of the coaster now known as Greased Lightnin'?

Answer: The Tidal Wave

I just recently found out that they changed the name of it. To be honest, I was sort of disappointed they did that. It was named The Tidal Wave for 25 years and it was the very first roller coaster I had dared to ride. It turned me into a roller coaster riding fanatic! I can't imagine calling it by any other name, so it will always remain The Tidal Wave to me.
2. The coaster now known as The Demon also had a previous name, what was it?

Answer: The Turn Of The Century

They changed the name to The Demon in 1980.
3. Please finish the following introduction that you hear when boarding the Top Gun roller coaster. "Battle stations, battle stations, welcome to Top Gun. Please watch your step as you board the ________."

Answer: aircraft

Top Gun is my favorite ride at Great America. I've rode it so many times that when I'd come home from a day at the park, I would recite this over and over in my head while trying to go to sleep. It drove me crazy!
4. How many stories do you drop on Drop Zone Stunt Tower?

Answer: 22

I've only rode Drop Zone twice. I love coasters but I just can't seem to get a feel for this ride. I swear I think part of my stomach is still at the top of the tower!
5. What ride now occupies the site of the former boat ride known as the Yankee Clipper?

Answer: Stealth

Stealth was Great America's new ride attraction for the year 2000. It's the world's first flying coaster.
6. This coaster was one of the park's originals that was removed due to a fatal accident. Do you remember it's name?

Answer: Willard's Whizzer

Willard's Whizzer was its actual full name, but a lot of people might remember it simply being called the Whizzer. It was too bad about this coaster, I thought it was really fun. However, I do remember them having a lot of complications with it. The very first time I rode it, it got stuck on the climb up.
7. The roller coaster Top Gun was named after a Paramount's motion picture?

Answer: true

The movie "Top Gun" was released in 1986. It stars Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. It's about a group of students who attend a flying school to become jet fighter pilots. It's a really good movie with some great music. Paramount's Great America named the roller coaster, Top Gun, after this movie. The coaster is meant to give one a thrill on what it may be like to be a jet fighter pilot.
8. What's the name of the log boat flume ride?

Answer: Loggers Run

A very popular water ride indeed.
9. The area of the park where anyone who dares to pass through it will get soaked is?

Answer: Splat City

The perfect place to be on a very hot day is Splat City. No need to worry about hair or make-up here, it won't do you any good!
10. In what year did the park open for the first time?

Answer: 1976

It opened in 1976 under the name Marriott's Great America. Its identical sister park also opened that year on the same day under that same name in Gurnee, Illinois. When Marriott decided to sell, the park in Santa Clara, CA (the one this quiz is about) was bought by Paramount and the park in Gurnee, Illinois was bought by Six Flag's. Well, I hope you enjoyed my quiz.
