Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This poker hand is so named for its resemblance to a film and song title. The actual name of the hand, however, is named for the singer of the song. Take a look at the cards, figure out what song title it resembles, and then tell me; who is the namesake of this poker hand?

Answer: Parton, Dolly

Getting a 9 and a 5 (whether suited or offsuit) is sometimes referred to as "Dolly Parton" because of her 1980 hit "9 to 5". Unfortunately, getting a 9,5 in Texas Hold 'Em isn't overly impressive; though it's not a terrible way to start a hand either.
2. This poker hand, though not terribly great, has quite an interesting nickname. There is a book whose title contains the numbers of these cards in it. Therefore, the hand nickname is that of the author. What is this poker hand sometimes called?

Answer: Orwell

George Orwell published "Nineteen Eighty-Four" in 1949. Naturally, then, having an 8,4 hand would be considered "Orwellian" in nature.

Unfortunately, there are no poker hands that really fit with C.S. Lewis, Lewis Carroll, or J.R.R. Tolkien.
3. This hand, which is a great start for Texas Hold 'Em, is often known by a name shared by a television character. Look at the cards; can you tell what character is often the nickname of this hand for phonetic reasons?

Answer: Kojak

Kojak is the nickname of a K,J hand (suited, typically, but also offsuit) simply for phonetic reasons. It actually has nothing to do with Telly Savalas or his character from the 1970s television show of the same name.
4. This hand doesn't seem like much, but it did help one famous poker player win a poker tournament in 2003. This particular hand has several names, but which of these is not one of them?

Answer: Early Riser

In 1882, Jesse James was shot, and it is believed by many to have been a .45 that he was shot with. So, for that reason, "Jesse James" is sometimes given as the nickname for a 4,5 poker hand. The hand has also been referred to as "Moneymaker" since 2003, when Chris Moneymaker won the World Series of Poker with the hand.

The hand has also been called "Jane Russell", but never "Early Riser".
5. This hand has a musically related nickname. Pull out your old records, look at the cards, and tell me; what is the nickname of this poker hand?

Answer: RPM

Originally, before the age of digital downloads, compact discs, or even cassette tapes, there were vinyl records. These records were identified by their RPM, and the original 10-inch records were 78 RPM. Therefore, a 7,8 poker hand is oft referred to as an RPM hand.
6. I am a lover of puns and wordplay, so this next poker hand is a personal favorite of mine. These two cards are referred to by which name, which happens to answer a question?

Answer: Flat Tire

I am personally quite fond of the reasoning behind the name of this particular poker hand. "Flat Tire" is an answer to the question "What do you need a J,4 (jack for)?" The clever wordplay doesn't guarantee a win with the cards, of course, but I smile more when I receive the J,4 than when I get pocket rockets (A,A).
7. This hand refers to a certain female tennis player for obvious reasons. Which of these tennis players is the namesake of this particular hand?

Answer: Anna Kournikova

A,K is a fairly good hand to start, but it seems to never do so well when it comes to actually winning the hand. For this reason, Vince Van Patton coined the nickname (Anna Kournikova's initials happen to be A,K) during his commentary during the World Poker Tour.

His reason: A,K 'looks great but never wins.'. While it may be true that she never won any major titles, Anna Kournikova rose to fame as one of the most well-known and greatest tennis players of all time.
8. There doesn't seem to be anything very special about this hand, but it is, in fact, very special indeed. The nickname for the hand reflects this special quality as well. Though it may be a bit obscure, can you figure out what the nickname of this Texas Hold 'Em hand might be?

Answer: Computer Hand

Interestingly, it has been calculated that the Q,7 hand is the average hand. As it turns out, exactly half of other hands will beat the Q,7, and half will lose. With that, the otherwise boring and meaningless hand has been given the nickname "Computer Hand".
9. Which card, would you say, would be paired with this one in order to have what is known as the "Dead Man's Hand"?

Answer: Eight of Clubs

When Wild Bill Hickok was murdered, he happened to have been playing poker, specifically five-card draw. His hand supposedly included a pair of black aces and a pair of black eights. The kicker card is unknown. The hand is one of the most known among poker players and non-players alike. Even when playing Texas Hold 'Em, when only two cards are dealt, a black ace and black eight is still referred to as the "Dead Man's Hand".
10. I finally got a hand worth shouting about. Unfortunately, while playing, I did. Everyone playing promptly folded and I won nothing. I guess I didn't hide my expressions very well, and you could say that I had a bad... what? Oh, and as an added bonus, if you guessed the first nine answers correctly, the first letter in each will spell out the answer for this question.

Answer: Poker Face

A good poker player relies on having a stellar poker face. You may often see players wearing sunglasses while playing poker, which may seem odd at first. However, the purpose of wearing shades indoors is not for style; it's to cover the eyes, which can be a big tell on a player's face (a 'tell' is something that others may notice about someone when they have a good hand, whether it's a nervous tick, a slight smile, a nostril flare, etc.).

Also, if you're interested, two aces are referred to as Pocket Rockets, American Airlines, and Bullets.
