Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who gave the news to Mary and Joseph that Jesus would be born?

Answer: an angel

An angel appeared to Mary and told her that she would have a baby through the Spirit of God. He told Mary to name the child "Jesus", because he would save his people from their sins. (Luke 1:26-38)

Mary was engaged but was not married yet. When Joseph had his doubts, the angel appeared to him and also gave him the news that Mary's child was of God.
(Matthew 1:18-25)
2. Who told Mary and Joseph to go to the city of Bethlehem?

Answer: the government

The government told Joseph and Mary to go to Bethlehem. Caesar Augustus, the ruler at that time, had ordered a census, or count, of all the people in the land. Every man was required to go to the city of his birth along with his family. Joseph took Mary, and together they made the journey. (Luke 2:1)
3. Traveling to Bethlehem was very tiring. The Bible says Mary rode on a donkey the entire way.

Answer: False

The Bible does not say or give detail to Mary riding on any kind of animal. The trip was 80 miles long and would have been a very long walk for Joseph and Mary, so many scholars assume they used an animal of some kind. However, the Bible does not say what it was.
4. According to the scripture in Luke, who rudely told Mary and Joseph they could not stay at the inn?

Answer: the Bible doesn't say

Although many Christmas plays picture a rude inn-keeper, Luke 2:7 simply says there was no room for them in the inn. It does not mention who turned Mary and Joseph away or even that they were rudely refused. However, someone provided the stable for Mary and Joseph to stay in the night Jesus was born.
5. According to scripture, what did the angels say when they appeared to the shepherds?

Answer: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

The angels appeared and nearly scared the shepherds to death. However they had good news and told the shepherds, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." (Luke 2:14)

There are many songs and carols about the angels singing, but technically the Bible doesn't say that they sang. When Jesus was born, it does say they gave praise to God. In most of the Bible when angels appeared to people they only spoke.
6. Jesus was a very special baby! What did Mary dress him in the night he was born?

Answer: swaddling clothes, or rags

The angels told the shepherds in Luke 2:12, "This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

Swaddling cloths were often strips of rags that were torn to wrap around the baby and keep them warm. They were not kingly robes or made out of soft material.
7. How many wise men does the scripture say visited Jesus when he was born?

Answer: It doesn't say.

The Bible does not say how many wise men there were. Most traditions believe there were three wise men because the Bible lists the three gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Gold was often a gift given to kings and a symbol of royalty. Frankincense was often used in temples where there were sacrifices. Myrrh was a sweet perfume.
8. The wise men saw Jesus on the same night he was born.

Answer: False

The wise men saw His star at his birth and began following it, but were not there the night Jesus was born. The journey was 500 miles from Persia and Mesopotamia to where Bethlehem was. Most scholars believe it would have taken at least a month. According to scripture, by the time the wise men arrived, Jesus and His family had moved into a house and were no longer in the stable.

When Herod ordered all the baby boys to be put to death, he looked only for the boys that were two and under. Therefore, Jesus was at least a month old and not yet 2 years old. (Matthew 2:9-18)
9. Isaiah 9:6, prophesied that unto us a child is born! Which of these were not one of the words used to describe the Messiah?

Answer: Mighty Soldier

Isaiah 9:6 is a popular scripture used at Christmas time to describe Jesus! It says, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

Many people wanted Jesus to be a warrior or soldier of some kind because when he was born, the Israelites were ruled by cruel governments. They were disappointed because Jesus was not, but Jesus performed many miracles, taught many sayings of wisdom, and brought peace to many people.
10. The story of Jesus' life is recorded in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Which of these Bible books did not tell the story of Jesus' birth?

Answer: Mark and John

The story of Jesus' birth is recorded in the Bible books of Matthew and Luke. John and Mark did not give any specific details of Christ's birth.
