Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All the clues in this quiz are written in Haiku form. This is a three line Japanese poem in which each line contains exactly five, seven and five syllables: Nine men on the field The bat connects with a crack What ball whizzes past?

Answer: Baseball

Baseball is often called "the great American pastime." The ball is struck by a bat, and if the hit is good the batter attempts to run around the three bases and back to home plate where he started. The other team attempts to prevent the scoring run by getting the baseball back to the fielder at the base before the runner arrives. American children often learn the game by playing on community teams.

2. Classic black and white Pentagons and hexagons Which did Beckham bend?

Answer: Football (Soccer ball)

The classic and probably most recognizable football (soccer ball) consists of white hexagons and black pentagons. This design was introduced at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico and featured in every World Cup through 2002 in South Korea-Japan. Other designs began to be favored starting with the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

David Beckham was a star English footballer who famously played for Manchester United and the English national team. He was the first English player to win league titles in four different countries playing for Premier League side Manchester United (6), La Liga's Real Madrid (1), MLS club LA Galaxy (2), and Ligue 1's Paris Saint-Germain (1). Beckham was renowned for his ability to bend or curve the ball, and the phrase "bend it like Beckham" was recognized all around the world.

3. I'm often on court And I'm whacked across a net In which grand slam sport?

Answer: Tennis

Tennis can be played on various surfaces such as grass, clay or hard court. It can even be played on carpet courts. There are four major tennis tournaments and these are called Grand Slams. These are the Wimbledon Championships, the US Open, the French Open and the Australian Open.

4. A curious game Australian Rules Football What shaped ball is used?

Answer: Oval like a rugby ball

Australian Rules Football is played on cricket pitches as it was invented in Australia (of course) as a way for crickets to stay fit in the off season. The pitches are therefore oval in shape and are 135-185 metres long. Points are scored by kicking an oval ball between two tall sticks at the end of the oval. This is a goal an worth 6 points. If you miss but the ball goes between the goal post and a smaller post either side of the goal post, this is called a behind and is worth one point. This type of football is rarely played outside of Australia

5. Ten pins must I strike Heavy ball sent down a lane I'm which ten frame sport?

Answer: Bowling

In bowling, you play ten frames against opponents. If you get all ten pins down first go, you get a strike and score 10 plus the score of the next two balls. If you miss some and get the rest down next ball you get a spare and score 10 plus the score from the next ball. If there are some left after two balls, you count how many are left. This is your score for one frame. Now it is your opponent's turn. You repeat this for ten frames. Highest score wins.

6. Small ball, hard, dimpled Wood and iron clubs, "Fore!" yelled Played on course, which sport?

Answer: Golf

In golf, clubs are used to hit balls into holes on a course. The clubs have heads that are made from wood, iron or a mixture of the two. The ball is small, hard, and has many indentations known as dimples on its surface. Golfers usually yell "Fore!" before hitting a ball to warn anyone who is in the way of the flying ball.

7. Heavens to Betsy I've got feathers stuck in me Which ball can I be?

Answer: Shuttlecock

The shuttlecock, which is used in badminton is a ball made from cork and covered with a thin sheet of leather. On the top of this ball is a series of (about) sixteen overlapping feathers that form an open cone. These feathers are usually duck or goose feathers.

8. Orange ball, black lines Five a team, dribble, pass, shoot Slam dunk! Score! Which sport?

Answer: Basketball

A basketball team consists of five players. The ball that they use is usually orange in colour with black lines on the surface, although balls in different colours are also available. Dribbling, passing and shooting are common moves in this game. A slam dunk is a type of goal-scoring method whereby the player jumps and places the ball directly into the basket.

9. Cue, golf, squash, ping pong Balls all different sizes. Which one's the biggest?

Answer: Cue ball

Cue balls used in pool, snooker and billiards are various sizes ranging from 52-61 mm but they will always be bigger than the other three balls.
A squash ball is 40 mm in diameter but it has a tolerance of 0.5 mm.
A golf ball is 42.7 mm in diameter. Previously a British version was slightly smaller. These types of golf balls are no longer used in tournaments.
A ping pong ball used to be 38mm in but it increased recently to 40mm in diameter as spectators had difficulty seeing the ball.

10. Two teams locked in scrum (Padding optional) brawl for Which oval-shaped ball?

Answer: Rugby ball

The rugby ball was, according to some sources, formerly called a quanco ball. The ball was originally more plum-shaped or spherical, but flattened out over time into an oval. The first rugby balls consisted of leather hand-stitched around pig bladders.
Rugby is in some ways similar to American football. There are two types of this sport: Rugby League and Rugby Union.
